    Notes: The Troika Beamlime at ESRF is based on the concept of beam multiplexing by using x-ray transparent diamond and/or beryllium monochromators. The favorable thermal and crystallographic properties of perfect diamond are well matched to the characteristics of the new low emittance undulator sources. A series of such transmission monochromators can use the same white beam and supply several experimental stations simultaneously with monochromatic x-rays of slightly different energies. The first experimental station of the Troika beamline is operating and the multiplexing mode has been tested successfully. First experiments including protein crystallography, resonant magnetic scattering, liquid surface diffraction, and scattering with coherent x-rays were carried out during the commissioning period and the results demonstrate the wide potential of third-generation synchrotron sources. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Asymmetrically cut perfect crystals, in both the Laue and Bragg geometries, are examined as single crystal monochromators for x-ray beams that are collimated to a small fraction of the Darwin width, as is typical in experiments with coherent x rays. Both the Laue and asymmetric Bragg geometries are plagued by an inherent chromatic aberration that increases the beam divergence much beyond that of the symmetric Bragg geometry. Measurements from a recent experiment at the ESRF are presented to compare Si(220) (symmetric Bragg), diamond(111) (asymmetric Laue), and diamond(111) (symmetric Bragg inclined) geometries. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Perfect crystals in transmission (Laue) geometry can be used effectively for x-ray monochromators, and moreover, perfect Laue crystals show an interesting focusing effect when the incident beam is white and divergent. This focusing is directly dependent on the incident beam divergence and on the diffraction profile width of the crystal. The aim of this work is to study whether this property can be used for focusing a synchrotron x-ray beam, and to obtain quantitatively the dimensions of the resulting monochromatic beam. We have experimentally measured the size of an undulator beam after diffraction from a diamond crystal in Laue geometry, and we analyze and explain the results by comparison with ray-tracing simulations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The large signal dynamics of passively colliding pulse mode-locked laser diodes is studied. We derive a model which explains modelocking via the interplay of gain and loss dynamics; no bandwidth limiting element is necessary for pulse formation. It is found necessary to have both fast and slow absorber dynamics to achieve mode-locking. Significant chirp is predicted for pulses emitted from long lasers, in agreement with experiment. The pulse width shows a strong dependence on both cavity and saturable absorber length. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The use of synchrotron radiation in the study of ordering transitions is presented. The peak-profile measurements can be carried out with a resolution one order of magnitude better than with classical sources in all directions of the reciprocal lattice. In the case of Fe–Al alloys, the small-angle scattering techniques can be transposed in the vicinity of a Bragg superstructure peak, which provides information on the antiphase configuration of the ordered alloys. Moreover, the high brilliance of the undulator of the ESRF ID10 beamline enables coherent scattering experiments. The conditions necessary to record holograms from an inhomogeneous sample are discussed and some results are presented.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of hydrocarbon synthesis over sulfide-based catalysts was studied. It appears that the formation of methane follows another reaction path than that of higher hydrocarbons. This might explain the very high selectivities for ethane and propane as compared with conventional Fischer-Tropsch catalysts. Reference is made to testing of the catalysts at industrial conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Metabolites (both intra- and extracellular) involved in penicillin biosynthesis were measured during fed-batch cultivations with a high-yielding strain of Penicillium chrysogenum. The fed-batch cultivations were carried out on a complex medium containing corn steep liquor. Three distinct phases were observed: (a) a rapid growth phase where free amino acids present in the medium are metabolized, (b) a linear growth phase, and (c) a stationary phase. The specific penicillin production (r p) is initially high and, during the rapid growth phase, it increases slightly. During the linear growth phase r p is approximately constant [4–6 mg penicillin V (g dry weight)-1 h-1 depending on the operating conditions], whereas it decreases during the stationary phase. During the cultivations the tripeptide Aad-Cys-Val (the first metabolite in penicillin biosynthesis) and 8-hydroxypenillic acid (formed by carboxylation of 6-aminopenicillanic acid, 6-APA) were found to accumulate in the medium, whereas the concentrations of isopenicillin N and 6-APA were found to be approximately constant and low. About 3% of the Aad-Cys-Val formed in the first step of the penicillin biosynthetic pathway is lost to the medium and 4% of the isopenicillin N formed in the second step of the pathway is lost as extracellular isopenicillin N, 6-APA or 8-hydroxypenillic acid. Also the cyclic form of α-aminoadipic acid, 6-oxo-piperidine-2-carboxylic acid, was found to accumulate in the medium and it was found to be formed in an approximately constant ratio to penicillin V of 6 mol/100 mol.
