Notes: Abstract The application of the perturbed γγ angular correlation technique as an analytical tool for the characterisation of atomic defect configurations is discussed. Using the radioactive probe atom111In/111Cd, recent results on the compensation of acceptor and donor atoms in different II–VI semiconductors will be discussed, in particular the role of the cation vacancy defect.

Notes: Abstract Defects induced by electron irradiation were investigated in GaP. The irradiation was performed at 15 K with an incident electron energy of 2 MeV and a fluence of 1018cm−2. Annealing experiments were carried out in the temperature range between 100 and 1000 K. Ga and P vacancies were detected after electron irradiation and the different annealing behaviour of the two types of vacancies was observed. The recovery stage between 100 and 400 K was attributed to the annealing of Ga vacancies and the recovery at temperatures above 900 K to the annealing of P vacancies. We also performed Hall measurements to determine the location of the Fermi level in the bandgap during the annealing. Two different ionization levels of the P vacancy were found which can be attributed to the transitions V P + /V P o and V P o /V P − . Temperature-dependent measurements were performed to study the effect of shallow positron traps.

Notes: Sodium hypochlorite solutions are used to treat membranes prepared from a polymeric blend containing poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) to increase their water permeability. Sodium hypochlorite affects the membrane material in such a way that PVP is selectively removed from the membrane matrix. The mechanism of the reaction between hypochlorite and PVP is investigated by several chemical analysis techniques of the reaction products. Strong indications are found that the reaction involves chain scission of PVP according to a radical mechanism. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Ion-platted thin copper films were examined for residual stresses and texture by X-ray diffraction. The complete orientation distribution functions were determined and sharp (111)-fibre textures were found. The strains were measured by grazing incidence diffraction. The stress tensors were calculated using both texture-weighted elastic compliances and texture-independent X-ray elastic constants. The importance of the texture measurement for the stress tensor determination is discussed. The found stresses can be interpreted as thermally induced.

Description / Table of Contents: Lattice Constant Determination in Cubic Thin Films under Thermal StrainAn X-ray diffraction procedure is presented to determine the lattice constant of a cubic thin film which is thermally strained. The procedure also gives the thermal strain. As application examples, the lattice constants of thin aluminium and copper films deposited by ion-platting are evaluated from grazing incidence diffraction data.

Notes: The on-line coupling of a liquid-liquid extraction system with capillary gas chromatography using atomic emission detection (GC-AED) has been studied. The required large volumes of about 100 μl of an iso-octane solution can be introduced into the GC-AED system by using the AED solvent vent and a solvent vapor exit in front of the capillary analytical column. Test solutions containing several pesticides were detected using the carbon, chlorine, nitrogen and sulfur channels. Analyte detectability (in concentration units) was improved significantly and low concentractions of the test compounds could be determined (1-5 ng/ml). Aqueous samples were on-line extracted and analyzed. The precision of the large-volume injection itself as well as the total extraction-GC-AED system was satisfactory (RSD of ca. 2 and 4%, respectively). As a real-life application, several ground water samples were screened.

Notes: ---The features of a resistive-heated capillary column for fast temperature-programmed gas chromatography (GC) have been evaluated. Experiments were carried out using a commercial available EZ Flash GC, an assembly which can be used to upgrade existing gas chromatographs. The capillary column is placed inside a metal tube which can be heated, and cooled, much more rapidly than any conventional GC oven. The EZ Flash assembly can generate temperature ramps up to 1200°/min and can be cooled down from 300 to 50°C in 30 s. Samples were injected via a conventional split/splitless injector and transferred to the GC column. The combination of a short column (5 m×0.25 mm i. d.), a high gas flow rate (up to 10 mL/min), and fast temperature programmes typically decreased analysis times from 30 min to about 2.5 min. Both the split and splitless injection mode could be used. With n-alkanes as test analytes, the standard deviations of the retention times with respect to the peak width were less than 15% (n = 7). First results on RSDs of peak areas of less than 3% for all but one n-alkane indicate that the technique can also be used for quantification. The combined use of a short GC column and fast temperature gradients does cause some loss of separation efficiency, but the approach is ideally suited for fast screening as illustrated for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organophosphorus pesticides, and triazine herbicides as test compounds. Total analysis times - which included injection, separation, and equilibration to initial conditions - were typically less than 3 min.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion inspection in aircraft constructionThe inspections required on an aircraft during its operational phase are determined largely by the materials and constructions used. Practical experience has shown that corrosion can generally not be prevented on metallic aircraft structures, even if the surface protection systems have been chosen with great care. Constructions and materials used on aircraft and the result types of corrosion are described and the inspection concept is explained on the basis of this. Finally, typical inspection tasks are presented and the measurement results obtained with different NDT methods are presented and discussed.
