Notes: A first adaptive x-ray mirror prototype was built in 1992 and is now installed on the ESRF beamline 2 (Materials Science). This system consists of a water-cooled 1 m long Pt-coated Si mirror, supported by two rows of 11 piezoelectric actuators. The shape of the mirror is continuously monitored by an optical analyzer; its readout being used by a feedback loop in a real-time algorithm. A workstation associated to real-time electronics calculates the relevant parameters for driving the actuators as a function of both the desired shape and the possible thermal deformation due to the incident beam. Preliminary experiments carried out on the wiggler beamline showed that the system runs correctly: the feedback loop permits a control of the mirror shape in the microrad range at a frequency of 10 Hz. Various shapes (cylinder, parabola, or ellipse) can be produced at will to within the above accuracy. The different components of the device are described and the alignment and calibration procedures are discussed. The first results dealing with the properties of the reflected beam (size, divergence, and shape) versus both the calibration quality and the incoming power are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A cross-correlation method of measuring the impulse response of linear systems is presented. In theory, by using this method, the impulse response of any linear system can be obtained while the system is being used under normal operation with no significant distortion of the normal system output. A cross-correlation system was modeled and constructed using discrete components and simulation and experimental results are presented. Unfortunately, these results show that the extracted impulse response is severely distorted by the normal system input and the system noise. However, by averaging and interleaving methods, the impulse response of any linear system can be extracted with a high degree of accuracy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A newly developed 0.78 μm single-mode laser diode spectrometer tuned by scanning the laser temperature with a resolution of better than 0.005 cm−1 is used to detect weak overtone spectra of water vapor and acetylene. A total of 3.65 nm continuous tuning range can be recovered from mode hops by operating two laser diodes alternately in different temperature regions at different injection current settings. The sensitivity of this spectrometer is demonstrated by its capability of detecting a weaker water vapor spectral line with an absolute intensity of 1.45×10−25 cm2/cm per molecule at 296 K using a 2.8 m single pass absorption cell by means of frequency-modulation spectroscopy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Regarding x-ray mirror design and fabrication, the unique properties of the ESRF source push specifications far beyond the obtainable limits of current technology. In order to keep control of the high quality of optical beamline components, interferometric based metrology capabilities are mandatory. This paper describes the ESRF metrology facility in which four complementary systems permit complete analysis of the quality of x-ray optical components. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Beamline 9 Wiggler was designed by Intermagnetics to produce a 16 milliradian fan of high energy x-rays into three experimental stations. The device has a 26 cm period and contains 7.5 full-strength periods. The minimum air gap is 2.1 cm. At minimum gap, a peak field of 1.9 Tesla and a half-period integrated field strength of ≥16.646 T-cm were specified by the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL). A combination of analytical, PANDIRA, and scale models were used to develop a novel "compact pole'' magnetic design. This design achieved 2.04 T peak field while maintaining a minimum of 17.816 T-cm half-period integrated field strength. Magnetic performance of the device was confirmed through the use of an Intermagnetics-designed Hall Probe scanning system as well as by long and short coil measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Description: :Anhydrite has been identified as a phenocrystic phase in some silicic volcanic magmas, but it is not commonly described in plutonic rocks. Anhydrite-bearing magmas tend to form in arc environments and to contain hydrous, low-temperature, oxidised mineral assemblages. Phenocrystic anhydrite coexists with sulphur-enriched apatite and sometimes with pyrrhotite, in silicate melt that contains from 50 ppm to 1 wt% S, depending on temperature and conditions. Vapour coexisting with anhydrite- and water-saturated magma may contain from a few tenths of a mole per cent to a few mole per cent sulphur gases (SO2 and H2S), with the exact composition and gas speciation depending on temperature and oxygen fugacity. Samples of one anhydrite-bearing magma, the 1991 Pinatubo dacite, have been experimentally crystallised to determine whether the magma retains its characteristic sulphur-rich mineral phases during solidification. Results show that anhydrite and sulphur-rich apatite are retained throughout crystallisation and vapour phase evolution. This suggests that anhydrite-bearing intrusive equivalents of the Pinatubo dacite should be present in arc plutonic complexes.
