Notes: Abstract Detecting active sonar returns in multipath media is a central underwater signal processing problem. This paper studies a new approach to active sonar detection using bispectral analysis of sonar data. Its sensitivity to non-stationarities is used to develop a threshold detector that can be applied to broad classes of signals and noise. Precise statistical descriptions of the underwater medium and noise are not required. Theoretical analyses predicting its performance as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and time-bandwidth product are presented. Computer simulation experiments verify the results and show that its performance compares favorably to that of conventional detectors.

Notes: Abstract MUSICOS (for MUlti-SIte COntinuous Spectroscopy) is an international project to facilitate and organize world-wide multi-site campaigns in high resolution spectroscopy, in view of obtaining a complete time coverage of various types of variable stellar phenomena. In the framework of this project a vast spectroscopic campaign was organized in December 1992, involving 8 sites well distributed in longitude around the Earth. The observations concerned three scientific programs, among which was the study of azimuthal structures in the wind and chromosphere of the pre-Main-Sequence Herbig Ae star AB Aur. The Hei 5876 Å line of AB Aur, which is formed in the expanding chromosphere of this star, in the innermost parts of its wind, was monitored at a resolution of 30000, nearly continuously for about 4 days. A spectacular variability of this line was discovered, the profile changing from pure emission to a composite profile including a deep absorption component in the course of a few hours. This variability can be the signature of azimuthal structures in the wind of AB Aur. We present the data collected during the campaign, and discuss possible interpretations of the spectacular variations of the Hei 5876 Å line.

Notes: Abstract Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), an autosomal dominant disease characterized by neoplasia of the parathyroid glands, anterior pituitary and endocrine pancreas, is rarely reported in Asian populations. The MEN1 gene, mapped to chromosome 11q13 but yet to be cloned, has been found to be homogeneous in Caucasian populations through linkage analysis. Here, two previously unreported Asian kindreds with MEN1 are described; link-age analysis using microsatellite polymorphic markers in the MEN1 region was carried out. The first kindred, of Mongolian-Chinese origin, is a multigeneration family with over 150 living members, eight of whom are affected to

Notes: Abstract In this paper we describe the isolation and characterization of a respiration-deficient yeast strain which is defective in the function of subunit II of cytochrome c oxidase. This strain, VC32, carries a mutation in the mitochondrial COX2 gene which converts a conserved glycine residue to arginine. The conserved glycine is in a region implicated as important for ligating the CuA redox center and for interaction with cytochrome c. We have also characterized five revertants of VC32 which have recovered respiratory function; all five were mapped to the mitochondrial genome. In three of the five revertants the wild-type glycine codon is restored, while in two of the five the mutant arginine codon is still present. These two strains are likely to possess alterations either in components of the mitochondrial translation machinery or in mitochondrially-encoded gene products that interact directly with subunit II to assemble an active oxidase complex.

Notes: Abstract Serial plasma samples were collected after administration of 13 intravenous doses of phenytoin to 11 patients with head injury; 5 to patients who had been receiving enteral feeds for less than 5 days (group 1), and 8 to patients who had been receiving enteral feeds for longer than 5 days (group 2). Average plasma phenytoin concentrations were higher in group 1 than in group 2 (p=0.003). The median intravenous study dose was the same (300 mg) in both groups (p=0.1 7). Group 2 received slightly higher doses expressed as mg/kg (median of 5.45 mg/kg compared to 4.29 mg/kg in group 1, p=0.21). Phenytoin was more rapidly eliminated following intravenous dosing in patients receiving long-term enteral feeding.V max was higher in group 2 than in group 1 (medians, 709versus 394 mg/day) andK m smaller (medians, 2.5versus 3.9 mg/l), but volume of distribution was similar in both groups (p=0.88). The kinetic parameters of phenytoin in group 1 were similar to previously published population pharmacokinetic parameters. In order to maintain phenytoin concentrations adequate for seizure prophylaxis in patients receiving longterm enteral feeding it would be advisable to decrease the dosing interval as well as increasing the phenytoin dose when the drug is administered intravenously.

Notes: Abstract A monotone path system (MPS) is a finite set of pairwise disjoint paths (polygonal areas) in thexy-plane such that every horizontal line intersects each of the paths in at most one point. A MPS naturally determines a “pairing” of its top points with its bottom points. We consider a simple polygon Δ in thexy-plane wich bounds the simple polygonal (closed) regionD. LetT andB be two finite, disjoint, equicardinal sets of points ofD. We give a good characterization for the existence of a MPS inD which pairsT withB, and a good algorithm for finding such a MPS, and we solve the problem of finding all MPSs inD which pairT withB. We also give sufficient conditions for any such pairing to be the same.

Notes: Abstract Small trunk pieces of a freshly felled 10-year-old oil palm,Elaeis quineensis (Jacq.), were placed in a modified Nalgene desiccator, and volatiles captured for six days on Porapak Q. Gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of Porapak-Q-trapped volatiles with both flame ionization (FID) and electroantennographic detection (EAD) using male or femaleR. phoenicis antennae revealed several EAD-active compounds. They were identified as: ethyl acetate, ethyl propionate, isobutyl propionate, ethyl butyrate, and ethyl isobutyrate. In field experiments in the La Me Research Station, Côte d'Ivoire, ethyl propionate (50 mg/24 hr) but not all esters combined (50 mg/24 hr each) significantly increased capture ofR. phoenicis in pheromone-baited (3 mg/24 hr) traps. One kilogram of 1- to 3-day-old palm tissue was significantly more effective than ethyl propionate in enhancing pheromone attraction. Superior attraction of palm tissue may be attributed to additional as yet unknown semiochemicals. Alternatively, release rates and/or ratios of synthetic volatiles differed from those of palm tissue at peak attraction.
