    Notes: An error estimate for the finite element method is presented in this paper. The error is identified as the response to a set of residual forces, and a complementary analysis provides an upper bound estimate of the global energy of the error. The inequality proposed by Babuška and Miller1 is then employed to bound the error in stress and displacement at a point. The formula is derived for two-dimensional elasticity, but the procedure is general; and can be applied to three-dimensional and other problems. Numerical experiments using the procedure are carried out and the results are given for the four-node bilinear compatible element and plane stress.

    Notes: It has been established that the product of the reaction of N-pentafluorophenylcarbonimidoyl dichloride (1) with dibenzylamine, viz. N2-pentafluorophenyl-N1,N1-dibenzylchloroformamidine (4a) is a Z-isomer, whereas according to the concept of stereoelectronic control one might have expected a product with E-configuration. The heat of formation and the geometry of Z- and E isomer of N2-pentafluorophenyl-N1,N1-diethylchloroformamidine (4b) (the latter is a product of the reaction of 1 with diethylamine) were calculated with the semi-empirical MNDO method. The calculated geometry of (Z)-4b was found to be in a good agreement with the experimentally determined structure of 4a. The formation of (Z)-4b is more preferable energetically than that of (E)-4b; the calculated difference in the heats of formation is 2·8 kcal mol-1. Thermodynamic control of the reaction stereochemistry is proposed.

    Notes: The reduction of stress concentration around a circular hole in a dynamically loaded plate by introducing auxiliary holes around the original hole is studied numerically. The solution of this plane stress problem is carried out in the Laplace transformed domain with the aid of the boundary-element method, and subsequently the time domain response is obtained by numerically inverting the transformed solution. Numerical examples are presented which demonstrate a stress reduction as high as 18 per pent by the introduction of two auxiliary holes in the loading direction for the uniaxial case.

    Notes: A numerical investigation of the flow of two immiscible stratified fluids under an isolated keel has been undertaken. The investigation utilized the two-dimensional Euler equations for incompressible flow, and the solution of these equations has been obtained by using the well-known finite volume marker and cell approach. Experimental drag-force measurements are also presented for a family of two-dimensional topographic models of fixed height with increasing surface slopes in a two-layer density system. The range of flow speeds explored covers the Froude number range from subcritical to fully supercritical. The drag force measurements are augmented by detailed observations of the interface distortion. The results clearly show large drag increases arising from the internal wave systems generated in the stratified flow. Very good agreement has been found between the experimental and numerical results for both the interface shape between the two fluids and the drag force on a variety of keels.

    Notes: The formation of large gas bubbles at submerged orifices is investigated numerically with a two-dimensional, transient, finite difference model using a volume fraction specification to track the movement of the gas-liquid interface. Experimentally observed features of large-bubble formation such as the initial toroidal shape of the bubbles and the penetration of liquid down the pipe centreline are well predicted by the model. The expected oscillatory nature of growth is also observed. The bubble departure volume corresponds to experiments and to the model of Davidson and Schuler. At present the simulations do not extend far enough to investigate multiple-bubble ejection and important bubble-to-bubble interactions during growth and after departure.

    Notes: The rate coefficient for the unimolecular reaction, C2H6 → CH3 + CH3, was measured in reflected shock wave experiments using narrow-linewidth laser absorption of methyl radicals at 216.6 nm. The experiments were conducted in the falloff regime at the conditions 1350 to 2110 K, 0.58 to 4.4 atm, in 50 to 500 ppm C2H6/Ar and 190 ppm C2H6/N2 mixtures. At temperatures below 1500 K, the measured rate coefficients are in good agreement with the expression of Wagner and Wardlaw (1989). Above 1500 K, the measurements fall increasingly below their predictions. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: This paper deals with simple and effective C0 linear triangular bending elements based on the Hu-Washizu variational principle. The following key features are inherent in the proposed formulation: extensional, flexural and transverse shear strains and the corresponding stresses are referred to the directions of the triangle sides. The independent variation of displacements, strains and stresses yields discrete approximations consistent with the continuum theory. Furthermore, a proper identification of the deformational modes and the orthogonality requirements between the assumed transverse shear forces and the undesirable strain fields lead to element formulations with important attributes: minimization of superfluous energy, properly justified assumptions, simplicity of formulation and straightforward extension to non-linear problems. Alternative approximations of strains and stresses, also presented, enhance the element performance in the case of both thick and thin plates and shells. Test examples demonstrate the characteristic properties of the proposed element formulations.
