    Description: Rice prolamines are sequestered within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) lumen even though they lack a lumenal retention signal. Immunochemical and biochemical data show that BiP, a protein that binds lumenal polypeptides, is localized on the surface of the aggregated prolamine protein bodies (PBs). BiP also forms complexes with nascent chains of prolamines in polyribosomes and with free prolamines with distinct adenosine triphosphate sensitivities.     Notes: The amorphization of Ni-Nb multilayered alloy films by xenon ion irradiation at room temperature and by high-temperature solid-state reaction was studied. The composition range favoring amorphization was carefully determined to be 20–85 at. % Ni by energy-dispersive spectroscopy attached to the transmission electron microscope. A new metastable crystalline phase (MX) of hexagonal structure was formed in Ni75Nb25 and Ni70Nb30 multilayered films. Interestingly, in the Ni75Nb25 multilayered films, with increasing mixing dose an amorphous phase was first formed and then the MX-phase was observed, while in the Ni70Nb30 multilayered films the MX phase was formed at relatively low doses and turned amorphous upon further mixing or 400 °C annealing for 2 h. Besides, annealing of the as-deposited Ni70Nb30 multilayered films at 300 °C for half an hour also resulted in the formation of the MX phase. The thermal stability of the ion-mixed amorphous alloys was also studied by subsequent annealing. To give semiquantitative interpretation to all the above observations, the Gibbs free-energy diagram of the system, in which especially the free-energy curve of the MX phase is added, was constructed on the basis of the model of Nissen et al. [CALPHAD 7, 51 (1981)] and the method proposed by Alonso and Simozar [Solid State Commun. 46, 765 (1983)]. The explanation based on this diagram is in good agreement with our experimental results.

    Notes: The dispersion relation of the system with two identical magnetic layers antiparallel coupled is modified from the normal antiferromagnetic material as well as that of the single ferromagnetic layer. With the external field in the film plane parallel to the in-plane easy axis, three unique regions exist as the antiparallel, canted and saturation region. The resonance field of the acoustic mode shifts significantly compared with that of a noncoupled layer system if the magnetization is not saturated. No antiparallel state exists with the external field perpendicular to the film plane and a minimum frequency, ω=2γHE, is required to observe the acoustic resonance mode. In each orientation the optical mode exists at a field of 2HE higher than that of the acoustic mode in the saturation region. These calculations are very helpful to understand the unusual ferromagnetic resonance spectrum in the strong antiparallel coupled bilayer system being investigated in this lab.

    Notes: The nature of the atomic structure and the characteristics of both line and planar defects in decagonal quasicrystals of as-cast Al62Cu20Co15Si3 were studied by means of conventional diffraction contrast and high-resolution electron microscopy. Two types of dislocations were observed. The magnitude and direction of the Burgers' vector of type A dislocations and the Burgers' vector direction of type B dislocations were determined. The direction of the displacement vector of the planar faults was defined.

    Notes: A high-resolution electron microscopic (HREM) study of the interface structure between diamond film and its silicon substrate has been carried out. The HREM images reveal that there is an amorphous layer between diamond film and its substrate for a sample grown by the hot filament chemical vapor deposition. β-SiC crystallites are embedded in this amorphous layer. The HREM images of cross-sectional specimens reveal that the diamond crystallites can nucleate directly on either the intermediate amorphous layer, the β-SiC crystallites, or at some scratches of the Si substrate.

    Notes: Boron carbide (B4C) is a wear resistant material with hardness slightly less than that of diamond. It has an excellent strength to weight ratio and relatively high toughness under controlled processing. These essential mechanical properties make B4C an ideal candidate for cutting tool and bearing applications. We will demonstrate that hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), a good solid lubricant, can be formed on B4C surfaces through high temperature (850 °C) nitrogen ion implantation. The formation of composite B4C and h-BN on the B4C surface can potentially reduce surface friction coefficients, making the material more attractive for tribological applications.

    Notes: A novel radiation detector, the Intrinsic Superconducting Radiation Detector (ISRD), is proposed. It employs the temperature dependence of the critical current of high Tc superconducting films to determine the detector temperature change caused by incident radiation and operates almost exclusively in the superconducting state. The ISRD has the potential to be a phonon-noise-limited thermal detector.

    Notes: Abstract The IR and visible spectra of HPromazine+ deuteroreineckate−, DPromazine+ reineckate− and HPromazine+ reineckate−, reineckate− is Cr(NCS)4(NH3) 2 − are reported together with the X-ray crystal structure determination of the latter. The assignment of the IR bands and the visible spectra are discussed in conjunction with the X-ray data. There is extensive hydrogen bonding in crystalline HPromazine+ reineckate− and the influence of the hydrogen bonding on the dimensions of the reineckate− anion is discussed. The folding of the phenothiazine ring in various derivatives is analyzed.
