Description: Fluoropolymers are used in many technologically demanding applications because of their balance of high-performance properties. A significant impediment to the synthesis of variants of commercially available amorphous fluoropolymers is their general insolubility in most solvents except chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The environmental concerns about CFCs can be circumvented by preparing these technologically important materials in supercritical fluids. The homogeneous solution polymerization of highly fluorinated acrylic monomers can be achieved in supercritical carbon dioxide by using free radical methods. In addition, detailed decomposition rates and efficiency factors were measured for azobisisobutyronitrile in supercritical carbon dioxide and were compared to those obtained with conventional liquid solvents.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Desimone, J M -- Guan, Z -- Elsbernd, C S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Aug 14;257(5072):945-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17789638" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A membrane polypeptide involved in K+ transport in a higher plant was cloned by complementation of a yeast mutant defective in K+ uptake with a complementary DNA library from Arabidopsis thaliana. A 2.65-kilobase complementary DNA conferred ability to grow on media with K+ concentration in the micromolar range and to absorb K+ (or 86Rb+) at rates similar to those in wild-type yeast. The predicted amino acid sequence (838 amino acids) has three domains: a channel-forming region homologous to animal K+ channels, a cyclic nucleotide-binding site, and an ankyrin-like region.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sentenac, H -- Bonneaud, N -- Minet, M -- Lacroute, F -- Salmon, J M -- Gaymard, F -- Grignon, C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 May 1;256(5057):663-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Biochimie et Physiologie Vegetales, ENSA-M/INRA/CNRS URA 573, Montpellier, France.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1585180" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Common themes are emerging from the study of viral, cell-cell, intracellular, and liposome fusion. Viral and cellular membrane fusion events are mediated by fusion proteins or fusion machines. Viral fusion proteins share important characteristics, notably a fusion peptide within a transmembrane-anchored polypeptide chain. At least one protein involved in a cell-cell fusion reaction resembles viral fusion proteins. Components of intracellular fusion machines are utilized in multiple membrane trafficking events and are conserved through evolution. Fusion pores develop during and intracellular fusion events suggesting similar mechanisms for many, if not all, fusion events.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉White, J M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Nov 6;258(5084):917-24.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Pharmacology, University of California, San Francisco 94143-0450.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1439803" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The time evolution of the isotopic composition of seawater strontium (the ratio of strontium-87 to strontium-86) over the last 500 million years has the form of an asymmetric trough. The values are highest in the Cambrian and Recent (0.7091) and lowest in the Jurassic (0.7067). Superimposed on this trend are a number of smaller oscillations. Consideration of the geochemical cycle of strontium and the dynamics of weathering shows that only Himalayan-style continental collisions can influence the isotope ratio on the scale observed. The contemporary Himalayan orogeny is by far the largest since the late Precambrian Pan-African event that produced the high in the Cambrian.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Edmond, J M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Dec 4;258(5088):1594-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17742524" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The topographic and magnetic surface structure of a natural single crystal of magnetite (Fe(3)0(4)), a common mineral, has been studied from the submicrometer scale down to the atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope having nonmagnetic tungsten as well as ferromagnetic iron probe tips. Several different (001) crystal planes were imaged to atomic resolution with both kinds of tips. A selective imaging of the octahedrally coordinated Fe B-sites in the Fe-O planes, and even a selective imaging of the different magnetic ions Fe(2+) and Fe(3+), has been achieved, demonstrating for the first time that magnetic imaging can be realized at the atomic level.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wiesendanger, R -- Shvets, I V -- Burgler, D -- Tarrach, G -- Guntherodt, H J -- Coey, J M -- Graser, S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Jan 31;255(5044):583-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17792381" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Single-crystal epitaxial thin films of the isotropic metallic oxides Sr1-xCaxRuO(3) (0 〈/= x 〈/= 1) were grown on miscut SrTiO(3)(100) substrates in situ by 90 degrees off-axis sputtering. These thin films exhibit low isotropic resistivities, excellent chemical and thermal stability, good surface smoothness, and high crystalline quality. Furthermore, the lattice parameters and magnetic properties can be varied by simply changing the strontium/calcium ratio. These epitaxial thin films, and their multilayer structures with other oxide materials, can be used for the fabrication of superconducting, ferroelectric, magneto-optic, and electro-optic devices.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Eom, C B -- Cava, R J -- Fleming, R M -- Phillips, J M -- Vandover, R B -- Marshall, J H -- Hsu, J W -- Krajewski, J J -- Peck, W F Jr -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Dec 11;258(5089):1766-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17831659" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
