Notes: Poly(vinyl alcohol) films were polarized at different electrical field strengths and temperatures. The peak temperature of the TSDC spectra shifted to higher values with increasing polarizing field strength and polarizing temperature. The activation energies and relaxation parameters of the process were evaluated. Based on the results, the origin of TSDC was attributed to space charge polarization with some contribution of dipole orientation.

Notes: It is noteworthy that the dehydro-Ala residue adopts an extended conformation that is different than those observed in dehydro-Phe, dehydro-Leu, and dehydro-Abu. The peptide N-Boc-L -Phe-dehydro-Ala-OCH3 (C18H24N2O5) was synthesized by the usual workup procedure and finally by converting N-Boc-L-Phe-L-Ser-OCH3 to N-Boc-L-Phe-dehydro-Ala-OCH3. It was crystallized from its solution in a methanol-water mixture at room temperature. The crystals belong to the monoclinic space group P21 with a = 9.577(1) Å, b = 5.195 (3) Å, c = 19.563 (3) Å, β = 94.67 (5)°, V = 970.1(6) Å3, Z = 2, dm = 1.201(5) Mg m-3, dc = 1.197 (5) Mg m-3. The structure was determined using direct method procedures. It was refined by a full-matrix least-squares procedure to an R value of 0.048 for 1370 observed reflections. The C2α-C2β distance is 1.327 (8) Å, while the bond angles N2-C2α-C2' and C1'-N2-C2α are 109.8 (5)° and 127.8 (5)°, respectively. The backbone adopts a nonspecific conformation with dehydro-Ala in a fully extended conformation with the following torsion angles: θl = 175.2 (4)°, ω, 0 = 170.2 (4)°, ø1 = 135.8 (5)°, ψ 1 = -22.6(6)°, ω1 = 168.5 (5)°, ψ2,= -170.3(5)°, ψ2T = -178.6(5)°', θT = 178.4(7)°. The rigid planar and trans conformation of dehydro-Ala forces Phe to adopt a strained conformation. The Boc group has a trans-trans conformation. The side-chain torsion angles of the Phe residue are χ1 = 63.3(6)°, χ12,1 = -92.1(6)°, χ12,2 = 89.5 (6)°. The observed conformation is stabilized by three nonlinear intramolecular C - H---O type of interactions. The crystal structure is stabilized by an intermolecular hydrogen bond N1 - H1---O2 of distance 2.938(7) Å along the b axis while the van der Waals forces are the stabilizing interactions in the ac plane. The low-energy conformation found by calculations corresponds to the solid state conformation established by the crystal structure analysis. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Stress relaxation studies were made on single fibers of Lincoln, Chokla, and Merino wool in water in the temperature range 2-80°C. Differences in the viscoelasticity of the three wool types were related to differences in their fine structure and morphology. Of the three wools, Merino fibers have the lowest crystalline content and the poorest fibril orientation and packing. This results in greater viscoelastic effects in this wool. Stress relaxation studies have been made in the Hookean, yield, and postyield regions, and the molecular mechanisms of stress relaxation have been discussed.

Notes: Isopropyl methacrylate (IPMA) with Acrylonitrile (AN) and Methacrylonitrile (MAN) copolymers of different copositions were prepared at 60°C and 80°C, respectively, using a mixture of n-Butylamine (nBA) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) as a charge transfer (CT) initiator. The percentage composition of the copolymers was established by elemental analysis. The copolymerization reactivity ratios were computed by the Kelen-Tudos method. In both the systems, IPMA was found to be more reactive; the copolymers sequence was random in nature. The copolymers were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR spectroscopy and intrinsic viscosity measurements in dimethyl formamide (DMF) at 30±0.1°C. The thermal behavior of the AN-IPMA copolymers was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) in air. The thermal stability increased, with increasing AN content in the copolymer chain. The solubility parameter of AN-IPMA copolymer was evaluated by studying the intrinsic viscosity in different solvents. The solubility parameter of the copolymer was found to be 9.7 (cal/cc)1/2.

Notes: The mobility of protons in wool samples of Lincoln, Chokla, and Merino, equilibrated to various moisture contents in the range of 0-98% relative humidity (RH), have been studied by pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. Peak height and peak width were determined from absorption and derivative curves and the relaxation times T1 and T2 were determined from relaxation curves. The mobility increases with increase in moisture content. Among the three wools, the mobility was high in Merino as compared to the other two wools. The differences in the measured mobilities were related to structural and morphological differences in the three wools. The present analysis suggests that water in wool has at least three different associations, each with a different binding energy.

Notes: A novel polyol synthesised from castor oil by aminolysis and a partially blocked toluene-diisocyanate blocked with N,N′-diethyl lactamide was used to prepare an urethane. This was used in different weight proportions to modify epoxy amine adduct to give binders suitable for cathodic electrodeposition. The pigmented composition of these binders based on the iron oxide (natural) and titanium dioxide (rutile) gave coatings with improved performance.

Notes: Photoinitiated graft copolymerization of the vinyl monomers, styrene and acrylonitrile, onto cotton cellulose was studied using uranyl nitrate and ceric ammonium nitrate as photoinitiators. Uranyl nitrate photoinitiation showed a higher level of grafting for styrene, whereas in the case of acrylonitrile ceric ammonium nitrate was found to be the better photoinitiator. Optimized conditions of grafting, when employed to cotton swollen with sodium hydroxide and zinc chloride, enhanced the graft levels for both monomers. Grafted samples were subjected to thermal analysis, as well as estimation of moisture regain and tenacity. Thermal stability increased, whereas, the moisture regain and tenacity decreased, with the increase in graft add-on in the case of both monomers. Acrylonitrile-grafted cotton showed dyeability with cationic dye that improved with the level of graft add-on. Possible explanations have been given.

Notes: 1-Acryloyl-4-acryloyloxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (AATP) has been covalently attached to polypropylene under conditions of reactive processing to give substantial concentrations of essentially 100% grafted antioxidant (AATP-B). Solution of the concentrates showed that at high concentration of grafted antioxidant some homopolymerized AATP was present and the polymer undergoes transient cross-linking during processing. Concentrates of bound AATP (AATB-B) when used as conventional additives for polypropylene are very effective photoantioxidants due to conversion to the related polymer-bound nitroxyl radicals by photosensitized oxidation. A typical commercial hindered phenol, Irganox 1076, when used at low concentration in combination with -B also acts as a photosensitizer for nitroxyl formation. Unlike low molar mass-hindered piperidinoxyl, polymer-bound nitroxyls are effective thermal antioxidants that synergize very effectively with low concentrations of Irganox 1076.
