Notes: Electron drift mobilities μe and electron–ion recombination rate constants kr have been measured by the analysis of transient current induced with the irradiation of an x-ray pulse on gaseous or liquid krypton in a cell as a function of external electric field strength. The effects of an external dc electric field on kr up to 12 mTd (1 Td=10−17 V cm2/molecule) in liquid and 63 mTd in gas have been examined. The observed kr values in both liquid and gas phases have been found to be much smaller than those calculated by the reduced Debye equation. The deviation has been compared with recent theoretical studies, leading to the conclusion that recombination in liquid and gaseous krypton is not the usual diffusion-controlled reaction. The kr values in the gas phase increase with an external dc electric field up to a critical electric field strength below which μe values are nearly constant, and above which both kr and μe values descrease with further increase in the electric field for both gaseous and liquid phases.

Notes: Emission spectra in the 190–600 nm region produced by electron impact on BCl3 have been studied up to 110 eV. Emission cross sections of the B(2s2p2 2D–2p 2P0) and B(3s 2S–2p 2P0) lines and the BCl(A 1Π–X 1Σ+) band are evaluated to be 4.9±1.0, 4.5±0.7, and (1.9±0.3)×10−18 cm2, respectively, at 100 eV. Formation cross sections of these species have been determined from the analysis of their fluorescence decaying curves. Two continuous emissions observed in the 230–380 and 400–580 nm regions are attributed to the BCl@B|2 band. The fluorescence lifetime of BCl*2 in the 300–342 nm region is obtained to be 1.65±0.2 μs, which is nearly independent of the wavelength.

Notes: In plasma physics, laser diagnostics were first developed to probe the core region of magnetically confined high-temperature plasmas, but the advent of various new lasers has turned out to be useful for edge plasma studies. The recent developments of various arc and glow discharges for industrial plasma applications have required measurement of the same quantities as in the edge plasma studies and expertise in the latter has been fully exploited for the former. The experience thus gained has then been used for the advantage in the studies of edge plasma behavior in high-temperature plasmas. The interplay of these two fields of plasma studies, where laser diagnostics of plasmas (which we call "laser-aided plasma diagnostics'') is extensively used, is discussed.

Notes: A pulsed dye laser system fully controlled by a microcomputer has been developed as a tunable light source for analytical spectroscopy. The system has 13 dyes with a rapid replacement mechanism and a frequency doubler inside, and any desired wavelength from 220 to 740 nm can be instantaneously generated by the aid of the microcomputer control. The absolute wavelength can be automatically calibrated with a newly developed optogalvanic wavemeter with an accuracy of ±1 cm−1 over the whole spectral range.

Notes: A magnetic force microscope (MFM) using a direct resonance frequency sensor which can be operated in the air has been developed. This instrument is simple and easy to handle because a vacuum system is not needed. The cantilever is used as a resonator in the oscillator, and its oscillating frequency is detected by a frequency modulation (FM) demodulator. A phase locked loop (PLL) FM demodulator is used which is less affected by noise. The cantilever is fabricated by Si microprocessing and its tip formed by precise focused ion beam (FIB) milling. MFM images demonstrate that this instrument has a performance almost the same as that which can be achieved in vacuum. It also has a scanning speed which is approximately 10 times as fast as that of an instrument using conventional slope detection techniques, and its signal-to-noise ratio is comparable to that of conventional systems.

Notes: Abstract Enthalpy increment HT-H289K measurements have been made on iron Chevrel phase sulphide Fe2Mo6S7.8, in the temperature range 300 to 500 K by the drop method using a hightemperature Calvet-type twin calorimeter. The first-order phase transition of this sulphide from a triclinic (low-temperature phase) to a rhombohedral (high-temperature phase) occurred at 375 K, and the enthalpy was evaluated to be 6.0 kJ/mol. The heat capacities of iron Chevrel phase sulphide Fe2Mo6S7.8 were also calculated before and after the phase transition.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation behavior of SUS430 stainless steel was studied in moist atmospheres $$(P_{H_2 O} = 3.4 \times 10^3 Pa, P_{O_2 } = 20 \sim 12.6 \times 10^3 Pa)$$ at 873 K. The mass gain during oxidation was measured by using a thermobalance. An abnormal rapid oxidation occurred after an incubation period which increased with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The product on the surface was identified as α-Fe2O3 of whisker-like morphology by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The abnormal oxidation was not observed under high-oxygen partial pressures. The results of the experiments conducted in various atmospheres were analyzed and are discussed.

Notes: Summary Segments of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) carrying the gene for the α-subunit of F1-ATPase (atpA) were detected by Southern hybridization with atpA from pea as probe. In the case of Nicotiana langsdorffii, we identified four fragments that are derived from combinations of two different 5′ and two different 3′ flanking regions of atpA. All four types share the coding region, suggesting that they result from homologous recombination in the coding region of atpA. By contrast, N. glauca generated only one analogous fragment, which indicated the existence of only a single type of atpA in N. glauca. In the case of somatic hybrids obtained by fusion between protoplasts from N. langsdorffii and N. glauca, analysis with EcoRI or HindIII detected three new fragments in addition to the parental fragments. These new fragments can be explained by homologous recombination within the coding region of atpA. Our results show that the coding region of atpA is involved not only in intragenomic homologous recombination but can also be involved in homologous recombination between two parental mitochondrial genomes of somatic hybrids.

Notes: Summary Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) levels in cardiocytes and plasma were examined by using immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and radioimmunoassay in non-obese diabetic mice (NOD). Cardiocyte ANP mRNA expression was measured by the polymerase chain reaction method. ANP immunoreactivity in the auricular cardiocytes was more prominent in hyperglycemic mice (NOD-h) than in normoglycemic mice (NOD-n). Ultrastructural examination showed that auricular cardiocytes of the NOD-h group contained more cytoplasmic granules than cells of the NOD-n group. Ultrastructural morphometry indicated that the number of granules per auricular cardiocyte was significantly larger in the NOD-h group than in the NOD-n group. (P〈0.01), whereas the granule diameter was significantly smaller in the NOD-h group (P〈0.01). Radioimmunoassay showed that ANP levels in the NOD-h auricular cardiocytes were significantly higher than those in the NOD-n cardiocytes (P〈0.01); the opposite was true in plasma. Cardiocyte ANP mRNA expression was lower in the NOD-h group than in the NOD-n group.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer, magnetic susceptibility and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies of inactive and photoactivated NHase enzymes were performed to elucidate the electronic change of non-heme two-iron atom center of the enzyme by photoactivation. These spectroscopic investigations revealed that both the two iron atoms of the active NHase could be assigned to low-spin ferric state, and those of the inactive NHase could each be assigned to low-spin ferric and low-spin ferrous ones. From these results, it was concluded that one of the non-heme iron atoms is oxidized in the inactive NHase during photoactivation.
