    Notes: Transient temperature profiles for long rods of lossy dielectric materials with thermally-dependent dielectric properties exposed to uniform plane waves are obtained. Maxwell's equation and the heat equation are simultaneously solved using the finite element method to predict the power absorbed and the resulting temperature rise in samples of square and circular cross-section. Following the method introduced recently, we derive an exact radiation boundary condition which is independent of the rod cross-section. For a cylindrical sample, the boundary condition is imposed on the cylinder itself. For a square rod, the boundary condition is imposed on a cylinder containing the rod. The temperature dependence of dielectric properties and sample dimensions appreciably influence heating patterns. For square samples, the edges focus radiation, causing preferential heating at the edges. This effect is pronounced for larger samples. In addition, the incident wave polarization influences the heating of the rod. For waves where the electric field is polarized along the long axis of the sample (TMz polarization) the power absorbed is higher than when the electric field is perpendicular to the axis (TEz polarization). A case involving runaway heating is also investigated.

    Notes: A new approach to gross error detection provides unbiased estimates and 100(1-α)% simultaneous confidence intervals of process variables when biased process measurements and process leaks exist. Presented in this article are estimation equations for process variables, as well as equations that help identify biased measurements and process leaks. These equations include the power function for a global test, and two types of α-level component tests and their power functions. Important strengths and weaknesses of this approach are compared to those of the serial compensation strategy, in particular, by varying the significance level (α), the variance-covariance matrix (Σ), the size of measurement bias (δ), the number of biased variables, and the sample size (N). Accuracy of δ estimation and performance in detecting the presence of process leaks (γ) are also evaluated and compared. The proposed approach has unique features that can provide a basis for improving the reconciliation of variables in process operations.

    Description: We present recent centimeter-wavelength 'global-array' VLBI images of the quasars 3C 273 and 3C 345 with dynamic ranges in excess of 3000:1. They trace the jet emission on scales from r about 5 parsecs out to about 200 parsecs. The maps of 3C273 at 18 cm wavelength show a well-collimated one-sided jet with a wavy ridge line; these wiggles exist on size scales ranging from about 1 pc to over 10 kpc. We show that the well-known superluminal flow extends to r about 120 pc. Images of 3C 345 at 6 cm wavelength from data taken in 1989 and 1990 show surprising features not seen in lower dynamic-range maps of this otherwise well-studied quasar: the inner part of the jet shows edge-brightening, which is important for modeling of jet confinement. The jet fades out very abruptly at r about 40 pc, then reappears at about 70 pc; beyond 70 pc, the resumed jet flares and is more diffuse than an extrapolation of the inner jet would predict. This morphology is reminiscent of M 87, and is suggestive of a shock wave.

    Description: We present the data for a redshift survey of galaxies selected from the database of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). The sample is flux limited to 1.936 Jy at 60 microns and covers 11.01 sr of the sky. It consists of 5014 objects, of which 2658 are galaxies. The remaining 2356 sources are listed in a separate table with identifications. Redshift data are also given for 212 IRAS galaxies which are not part of the complete sample, but were measured in conjunction with this project.

    Description: The acceleration on the Local Group is calculated based on a full-sky redshift survey of 5288 galaxies detected by IRAS. A formalism is developed to compute the distribution function of the IRAS acceleration for a given power spectrum of initial perturbations. The computed acceleration on the Local Group points 18-28 deg from the direction of the Local Group peculiar velocity vector. The data suggest that the CMB dipole is indeed due to the motion of the Local Group, that this motion is gravitationally induced, and that the distribution of IRAS galaxies on large scales is related to that of dark matter by a simple linear biasing model.

    Description: A maximum likelihood test for density evolution is applied to a full-sky redshift survey of 5297 galaxies selected from the IRAS data base and flux-limited at 1.2 Jy. No evidence for evolution is found. Attention is given to important systematic errors which decrease the certainty with which evolution can be measured, namely, limited knowledge of the cosmological model, the unknown intrinsic spectral energy distribution of IRAS galaxies from 16 to 140 microns, the effect of density fluctuations, a Malmquist-like bias arising from flux errors in the IRAS Point Source Catalog, and possible incompleteness of the sample at high redshifts and low Galactic latitudes. It is shown that the Malmquist bias could result in a significant overestimation of the evolution rate, especially if the catalog has a flux limit near the completion limit of the Point Source Catalog.
