    Notes: A cDNA clone encoding an isoform of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase was isolated from Nicotiana tabacum. The steady-state plasma membrane H+-ATPase message levels were the same in unadapted tobacco cells and tobacco cells adapted to 428 mol m−3 NaCl. When cells adapted to 428 mol m−3 NaCl maintained in the absence of NaCl (deadapted) for an excess of 100 passages were exposed to 400 mol m−3 NaCl for 24 h, there was an increased accumulation of plasma membrane H+-ATPase message. The NaCl responsiveness of the deadapted cells was dependent upon the growth cycle stage. Alterations in the levels of plasma membrane FT-ATPase message during the growth cycle support a role for the H+-ATPase in cell growth. These results document the induction by NaCl of plasma membrane FT-ATPase message accumulation in tobacco cells, and suggest that enhanced expression of the plasma membrane FT-ATPase has a role in the short term response of cells of NaCl, but is not necessarily involved in long-term adaptation.

    Notes: Polygalacturonase, a softening enzyme, influenced the development of physiologically injured fruit treated with vapor heat. Development of a nondestructive method to identify injured fruit was studied. X-ray computed tomography (CT), and 1H-MRI, applied in the medical profession and for food analyses, were investigated for this purpose. Results showed that the X-ray CT, image analyses of the MRI differentiated between normal and injured fruit. The possibility of developing a nondestructive analysis using this technology is suggested.

    Notes: Oxidative deterioration of fish model systems stored at 25°C in the dark was investigated. Peroxide and TBA values and fluorescence intensities of organic solvent extracts did not correlate well with the extent of lipid oxidation determined by oxygen absorption. However, two types of organic solvent-insoluble fluorescences (I: ex. 370 nm, em. 460 nm; II: ex. 450 nm, em. 500 nm) were observed in fish meats by solid sample spectrofluorometry. Fluorescence II showed a high positive correlation with oxygen absorption. Measurement of protein-bound fluorescence could be useful for assessment of oxidative deterioration in freeze-dried fish muscle and other lipid foods.

    Notes: The regression coefficient (slope) of the calibration for determination of the protein content decreased as oil content increased. A corrected equation for the effect of oil was derived using optical intensities at 2170 nm (protein) and 2306 nm (oil). The accuracy of the corrected calibration was tested against separate data sets with each oil content. Standard errors of the corrected calibration were comparable to the standared regression equation over a wide range of oil content, suggesting that this corrected calibration is useful for determination of the protein content in oil/water emulsions.

    Notes: Raphanusanin is a plant growth-inhibiting substance which plays an important role in light growth inhibition and phototropism of radish hypocotyls. We investigated the effect of raphanusanin on indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-mediated orientation of microtubules (MT) in the outer epidermal cells of radish hypocotyl segments using immunofluorescence microscopy. IAA-mediated MT reorientation preceded cell elongation induced by IAA. A change of IAA-mediated MT orientation from longitudinal to transverse started within less than 15 min after IAA treatment, while significant growth promotion induced by IAA was found within about 30 min. The IAA-mediated transverse MT orientations were significantly inhibited by simultaneously added raphanusanin. We also investigated the effect of raphanusanin on the MT orientation of the segments pretreated with IAA. The change of MT orientation induced by raphanusanin preceded growth inhibition of the segments. Within about 60 min after its application, raphanusanin initiated inhibition of the steady-state elongation pre-induced by IAA, while IAA-mediated transverse MT orientations started to change into longitudinal orientations within less than 30 min after application of raphanusanin. Based on these results, it is suggested that raphanusanin induces growth inhibition through interference with the auxin-mediated MT orientations.

    Notes: Abstract Assemblages of Early Pliocene Mysticeti (Cetacea) from the Sendai-Iwate and Choshi areas in eastern Japan were examined. The early Early Pliocene Tatsunokuchi and Yushima formations of the Sendai-Iwate area have yielded many cetotheres assigned to Herpetocetus (Cetotheriidae) and some extinct rorquals assigned to Burtinopsis (Balaenopteridae) and other genera. The late Early Pliocene strata of the Na-arai Formation of the Choshi area has yielded more than 300 mysticete ear bones which fall into seven morphotypes. Assemblages from the two areas differ greatly in taxonomic composition. Archaic mysticetes are dominant in the Sendai-Iwate area, while modern mysticetes are dominant and diverse in the Choshi area. Based on the results of this study we conclude that the diversity of the Early Pliocene mysticetes in the western North Pacific is comparable to that of the Recent.

    Notes: Abstract Northeast Japan is a typical island arc region and its topographic arrangement reflects the geophysical characteristics of the island arc system. However, the structural style of the arc is very complicated and varied due to the repeated superposing of faults and folds on to earlier structures.Geotectonic events that involved creation of the fundamental framework of the island arc crust occurred in east Asia in the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous and were probably induced by accretion and collision tectonics. The fragmentation and subsequent displacement of the crust took place during the Early Neogene in response to the terrane collision and the change in oceanic plate motion, leading to the opening of the Japan Sea. Huge amounts of volcano-sedimentary rocks buried the tilted fault blocks of pre-Tertiary basement with the development of the island arc.

    Notes: Abstract Upon studying the well preserved skulls referred to Paleoparadoxia tabatai from Japan, the short and low skull of the Yanagawa specimen requires an explanation. Six cranial and dental characters lead us to suggest that the Yanagawa individual is a female while the Izumi, Ohnohara, and Itsukaichi skulls are male. The important characters in the Yanagawa skull are its shortness and shallow depth, less pronounced sagittal and nuchal crests, smaller zygoma, and the small dentition with especially poorly erupted canines, most of which are indicative of weak masticatory musculature.

    Notes: Abstract Fossil cetacea of Japan are abundant and diverse. Despite several summary articles, all the known taxa have not previously been compiled in one place. Here we present a list of the published fossil cetacean records from the Japanese archipelago. The record extends from Middle or Late Oligocene to the Holocene, and includes representatives of both the suborders Odontoceti and Mysticeti. No Eocene Cetacea or Archaeoceti are recorded from Japan. As is typical of the eastern North Pacific and the South Pacific, the Oligocene and Early Miocene assemblages are comprised of archaic and usually extinct families, and the younger assemblages are represented by modern groups comprised of extant genera and families.
