Notes: Abstract It is shown that certain eigenvalue problems for ordinary differential operators with boundary conditions depending holomorphically on the eigenvalue parameter γ can be linearized by making use of the theory of operator colligations. As examples, first order systems with boundary conditions depending polynomially on γ and Sturm-Liouville problems with γ-holomorphic boundary conditions are considered.

Notes: Abstract A semi-empirical treatment of isothermal element partitioning caused by flow rate-dependent calcite growth from hydrothermal solutions yields element/Ca ratios that are qualitatively similar to those observed in calcite bands of the Pb-Zn banded ores from the Harz Mountains, Germany. The comparison of the calculations with the analytical results suggests that flow rates varied between episodes of calcite precipitation as well as during formation of individual bands. Based on a flow rate-dependent element partition coefficient, changing element/Ca ratios in precipitates from a hydrotherm are therefore not necessarily indicative of changing compositions of the fluid. The variations in element/Ca ratios to be envisaged could be as much as a factor of three.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the 1980s, extensive surveys were done of the fish diseases and their seasonal and regional fluctuations in German coastal waters. Fish diseases and many of their rates of incidence seem to be greater in the Wadden Sea, in particular its estuaries, than in water bodies used for comparison purposes. Three “new” diseases are described: food-induced buccal granulomatosis in smelt: yellow pest in cod, presumably caused by bacteria of the genus Flexibacter; and fibroma in hooknose in which lentivirus-like particles were found. Until now, research projects have concentrated on data collection in the field. Because insufficient experiments have been carried out, many important questions about the significance of these diseases still remain unanswered. It is believed that a number of parasite-induced diseases contribute substantially to the natural mortality of commercially interesting fish-especially juveniles-in the Wadden Sea, but this assumption remains unproven. The complex relationship between anthropogenic and natural factors in the genesis of fish diseases in the area will not be understood either if experiments are not carried out. The occurrence of yellow pest, Ichthyophonus disease and lentivirus-like particles in fish tumours poses a serious potential threat to the German fishing industry. Generally, the German public is very receptive to environmental problems where marine pathology is concerned. But because the emphasis is placed on other, short-term research projects, national research bodies are not able to analyze and evaluate such problems successfully. In addition to data collection at sea, greater importance should be attached to pure research in marine pathology, a hitherto neglected field, and particularly to experimental, biochemical and microscopic/diagnostic work. Problems arising in future can only be assessed and solved in time if knowledge is sufficiently broad-based and sound and can continue to increase.

Notes: Abstract A series of di-n-hexyl/di-n-pentylsilylene copolymers with monomodal molecular weight distribution have been prepared by Wurtz-coupling of dichlorosilanes using isooctane as a co-solvent. Crystallization and mesomorphic disordering were studied with regard to thermochromic effects and the silicon-chain conformation by DSC, MAS29Si-NMR, and UV-spectroscopy. The results show that the formation of a columnar mesomorphic phase is little affected by copolymerization of DHS and DPS units. Due to the preordering in the mesophase, three-dimensional ordering in the crystal is not hindered by topological constraints and isodimorphic mixed crystal formation was observed over the whole copolymer composition range. The predominantly all-trans structure, which is observed for crystalline poly(di-n-hexylsilylene), is maintained for copolymers containing up to 20%n-pentyl substituents.

Notes: Abstract The physics of Mott-Hubbard insulators with almost degenerate orbitals is described by the Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian, representing the coupling of spin and orbital degrees of freedom. In this paper we study by analytical methods, and by exact diagonalization techniques, the phase diagram and ground state correlations functions for a one and two dimensional version of the Hamiltonian. In particular, we study two limits; in the one, the orbital degrees of freedom are predominant while in the other, there is an interplay between spin and orbital energies leading to effects analogous to a Peierls instability.

Notes: Abstract Emission distributions P(E,θ) in energy E and angle θ of protons (p), tritons (t), and ∝-particles released in spontaneous fission of 252-Cf have been measured. Whereas the experimental data for t and ∝ indicate the expected tripartition as the predominant mode, p emission has been found to be due to fragment de-excitation from highly excited, rapidly moving fragments mainly.

Notes: Abstract Beta-decay half-lives (T1/2) and delayed-neutron emission probabilities (Pn) of very neutron-rich Cu to As nuclei have been measured, among them the new isotopes77Cu48,79Cu50,81Zn51 and84Ga53. With the T1/2 and Pn-values of now four N ∼-50 ”waiting-point” nuclei known, our hypothesis that the r-process has attained a local β-flow equilibrium araound A∼-80 is further strengthened.

Notes: Abstract Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) images have been recorded from the surfaces of platelet type monocrystals of linear alkanes, n-tritriacontane, C33H68, and n-hexatriacontane, C36H74. Structural details have been revealed in the range from several hundreds of nanometers down to the atomic scale. High resolution AFM micrographs of the linear alkanes show a regular pattern of elevations characterized by two main periodicities: aAFM=.70±.02 nm, bAFM=.52±.05 nm, $$\gamma _{AFM} = 88 \pm 3^\circ ,$$ , and aAFM=.79±.05 nm, bAFM=.61±.05 nm, $$\gamma _{AFM} = 87 \pm 3^\circ$$ , for C33H68 and C36H74 respectively. This structure is in fair agreement with the orthorhombic subcell of the bulk structure as confirmed by electron diffraction. Further, AFM results are in accordance with an orthorhombic unit cell for C33H68, and a monoclinic one for C36H74 under investigation. Consequently, the elevations in the AFM images can be assigned to individual methyl groups, which form the surface layer of a paraffine crystal. A regular surface structure has also been observed in AFM images of platelet crystals of cyclic alkanes, cyclooctatetracontane (CH2)48, and cyclodoheptacontane (CH2)72. In these cases, the periodicities are characterized by aAFM=1.10±.01 nm, bAFM=.85±.01 nm, yAFM=89±1o, and aAFM=1.11±.06 nm, bAFM=.91±.05, and $$\gamma _{AFM} = 90 \pm 3^\circ $$ , for (CH2)48 and (CH2)72, respectively. The images are consistent with the arrangement of the adjacent reentry folds obtained from crystallographic data.

Notes: Abstract The experimental access to M1 transition probabilities within thens 2 np k (1 ≦k ≦ 5) ground state configurations of highly ionized atoms is outlined. A test experiment on Xe(45–50)+ yielded first spectra and decay curves of the 2s 2 1 S 0 − 2s2p 3 P 1 0 intercombination transition in Xe50+ and of M1 transitions within the 2s 2 2p k (1 ≦k ≦ 5) ground configurations. The data compare well only with theoretical predictions which take the Lamb shift into account. Problems and prospects for better measurements are discussed.
