    Description: The Cassini Mission is a joint undertaking of NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) to explore the Saturnian System with a Saturn Orbiter and a Titan Probe. The launch vehicle and the Saturn Orbiter are the responsibility of NASA while the Huygens Probe (detachable Titan Probe) is the responsibility of ESA. The spacecraft will be launched in 1996 and the Huygens Probe will arrive at Titan in 2003. The Cassini Mission-Huygens Probe provides a unique opportunity to obtain detailed information about the atmosphere and, possibly, the surface of Titan. Titan possesses a substantial nitrogen atmosphere containing methane and many other organic compounds. Aerosols play an important role in the atmospheric processes on Titan. The Huygens Probe offers an opportunity to determine how organic particles are formed and grow which will clarify their role on Earth. A powerful analytical instrument, capable of addressing the above technology and other science questions, was recently proposed for the Huygens Probe. It is comprised of an aerosol and gas sampler and processor, and a gas chromatograph-ion mobility spectrometer. The instrument will be able to measure complex organics that make up the collected aerosols to the approximate 1 ppm level. Gases will be measured to approximately 10 ppb. Because the Titan atmosphere is expected to be quite complex, a gas chromatograph-ion mobility spectrometer is used to provide unequivocal identification of the components of the analytes. Further details of the science question to be investigated and the proposed instrument are described. The expected results and their implications are also addressed.

    Notes: Using histochemical techniques an abnormal programme of epidermal differentiation has been well documented in psoriasis. In order to characterise further the biochemistry of this process we have cultured dermal fibroblasts and epidermal keratinocytes from involved psoriatic skin. This has facilitated metabolic radiolabelling of skin cells and analysis of protein synthesis by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The expression of keratin and differentiation markers was identical to that of normal keratinocytes, suggesting that psoriatic epidermal differentiation is not truncated in vitro as has been postulated to be the case in vivo. Low molecular mass components (5-8.5 kDa), previously shown to be upregulated in suprabasal keratinocytes, were detected in epidermal fractions from psoriatic skin enriched for basal cells. Of especial interest was a component of 26 kDa, pI 5.9, which was highly upregulated in psoriatic as compared to normal cultured keratinocytes and was not detected in fibroblasts. These findings are in accord with a qualitatively abnormal pattern of differentiation for keratinocytes in the involved psoriatic epidermis.

    Description: During the February 10, 1990 flyby of Venus, the Galileo spacecraft skimmed the downnstream flank of the planetary bow shock. This provided an opportunity to examine both the global and the local structure of the shock in an interval during which conditions in the solar wind plasma were quite steady. The data show that the cross section of the shock in planes transverse to the flow is smaller in directions aligned with the projection of the interplanetary magnetic field than in directions not so aligned. Ultralow-frequency waves were present in the unshocked solar wind, and their amplitude peaked when the spacecraft was downstream of the foreshock. At large distances down the tail, the Mach number of the flow normal to the shock is low, thus providing the opportunity to study repeated crossings of the collisionless shock in an interesting parameter regime. Some of the shock crossings reveal structure that comes close to the theoretically predicted form of intermediate shocks, whose existence in collisionless plasmas has not been confirmed.

    Notes: The Δ1,2-dehydrogenation of high concentrations of the steroid -methyl-Reichstein's compound S-21-acetate (16MRSA) in a microemulsion system was studied using heat-dried and thawed Arthrobacter simplex cells as biocatalyst. The microemulsion system consists of an organic phase [75-95% (v/v)] with steroid (1-60 g/Ltot), an aqueous phase [5-25% (v/v)] containing the cells (5-30 g/Ltot), and a neutral surfactant (5-20 g/L organic solvent). Benzene derivatives, which solubilize 16MRSA up to 94 g/L, and phospholipids were used as organic solvents and surfactants, respectively, and menadione was added as an external electron acceptor. Factors affecting the dehydrogenation rate in the microemulsion system were studied. The influences of the 16MRSA and the menadione concentration on the dehydrogenation rate were described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics, apparent V′max and K′m values of 2.06 g/g dry weight h and 18.9 g/L for 16MRSA and 4.97 g/g dry weight h and 1.91 g/L for menadione being obtained. Optimal menadione concentration was dependent on the steroid concentration was dependent on the steroid concentration used. The reaction was strongly inhibited by high product concentrations. Much higher activities were obtained with the thawed cells than with the dried cells, conversions of 98% being reached within 14-16 h. for 16MRSA and cell dry weight concentrations of 40 and 10 g/L, respectively. Activity retention in a batch stirred tank reactor remained constant during the first 16-24 h of operation and then decreased, depending on the stirring rate; 22 to 65% of the initial reaction rate was obtained after 48 h at stirring rates of 650 and 2000 rpm, respectively.

    Notes: The application of photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) to detect culture contamination in chemostats was studied. It was found that the presence of a given particle size in a population of particles of a different size could be detected, but this ability was strongly dependent on particles of a different size could be detected, but this ability was strongly dependent on particle size difference and was most sensitive when contaminants are larger than the host. The inherent polydisparity of actively growing and dividing microbial cells negates any advantage in the use of multi-angle PCS to detect contaminants.

    Notes: In microbial reaction systems, there are a number of linear relations among net conversion rates. These can be very useful in the analysis of experimental data. This article provides a general approach for the formation and application of the linear relations. Two type of system descriptions, one considering the biomass as a black box and the other based on metabolic pathways, are encountered. These are defined in a linear vector and matrix algebra framework. A correct a priori description can be obtained by three useful tests: the independency, consistency, and observability tests. The independency are different. The black box approach provides only conservations relations. They are derived from element, electrical charge, energy, and Gibbs energy balances. The metabolic approach provides, in addition to the conservation relations, metabolic and reaction relations. These result from component, energy, and Gibbs energy balances. Thus it is more attractive to use the metabolic description than the black box approach. A number of different types of linear relations given in the literature are reviewed. They are classified according to the different categories that result from the black box or the metabolic system description. Validation of hypotheses related to metabolic pathways can be supported by experimental validation of the linear metabolic relations. However, definite proof from biochemical evidence remains indispensable.

    Description: Recent telescopic observations have led to the identification of cyanogroup-containing molecules in the dark surface solids of several D-class asteroids, cometary dusts, and the rings of Uranus, as well as the low-albedo atmosphere of Iapetus. The occurrence of the 2.2-micron overtone of C triple-bond N's stretching fundamental mode in all four classes of small solar system bodies is presently suggested to serve as a diagnostic of both exposure duration and degree of modification of surface materials.

    Description: Observed geology, photometry, and geophysical data are used to examine various processes and properties that may have contributed to Maranda's evolution. Global tectonics and surface flow features constrain the possible heating mechanisms and materials. Statistics on impact craters and comparisons with other satellites suggest that the impactor-source population evolved through time and that ejecta mantling has resurfaced significant portions of the surface. It is proposed that the coronae, which are unique to Miranda, were formed by relaxation of topographic highs, by lithospheric stress driven by intensity anomalies in the asthenosphere, or by diapirs either breeching the surface or feeding large-scale volcanic flooding through preexisting crack structure.

    Description: The present study determines the basic properties of the atmospheric temperature field of Uranus through a combination of earth-based and Voyager measurements. Stellar occultation observations indicate both spatial and temporal variability at microbar pressure levels. The tropospheric and stratospheric vertical structure are established via Voyager radio occultation and infrared measurements as well as earth-based full-disk infrared observations. It is found that the measured lapse rate at pressures greater than about 600 microbar exceeds that for fully equilibrated ortho and para hydrogen. The latitude dependence of the upper tropospheric temperatures is determined from Voyager infrared measurements; remarkably little contrast is found. The weak horizontal structure is consistent with tropospheric zonal winds which decay with height and are directed prograde at midlatitudes but retrograde at low latitudes.

    Description: Observations from approximately one-half of the Magellan nominal eight-month mission to map Venus are summarized. Preliminary compilation of initial geologic observations of the planet reveals a surface dominated by plains that are characterized by extensive and intensive volcanism and tectonic deformation. Four broad categories of units have been identified: plains units, linear belts, surficial units, and terrain units.
