Notes: Abstract Terraced substrate inner current stripe lasers emitting in the range of 750–780 nm are developed with very simple fabrication processes. The lasers have good performance of cw room temperature, linear light-current output over 30 mW per facet and maintain stable fundamental transverse and longitudinal mode of 2–4 times current threshold. The current threshold of 25 mA under cw room temperature operation has been achieved.

Notes: Abstract This paper is a survey of Rosen's projection methods in nonlinear programming. Through the discussion of previous works, we propose some interesting questions for further research, and also present some new results about the questions.

Notes: Abstract A kinematic shakedown theorem including the external loading and temperature variation is derived based on the concept of an assumed yield surface. An example is given to show the efficiency of the theorem obtained.

Notes: Abstract The problem of partitioning a rectilinear figure into rectangles with minimum length is NP-hard and has bounded heuristics. In this paper we study a related problem,Elimination Problem (EP), in which a rectilinear figure is partitioned into a set of rectilinear figures containing no concave vertices of a fixed direction with minimum length. We show that a heuristic for EP within a factor of 4 from optimal can be computed in timeO(n 2), wheren is the number of vertices of the input figure, and a variant of this heuristic, within a factor of 6 from optimal, can be computed in timeO(n logn). As an application, we give a bounded heuristic for the problem of partitioning a rectilinear figure into histograms of a fixed direction with minimum length. An auxiliary result is that an optimal rectangular partition of a monotonic histogram can be computed in timeO(n 2), using a known speed-up technique in dynamic programming.

Notes: Abstract We investigate maximum size sets of lattice points with a given diameter,d, within a given rectilinearly bounded finite regionR inn dimensions, under the Manhattan orL1 metric. We show that when the length ofR in each dimension is an odd integer (as, for example, then-cube) there is, for every integerd, a maximum size set having radiusd/2 about some center, though the center need not be a lattice point. Similar results are obtained whenR has even length in some dimensions, except for a set ofd values whose cardinality is one less than the number of dimensions in whichR has even length. This question is still open for these values.

Notes: Abstract Three-component seismograms at the three USC stations, PVP, GFP and DHB, have been examined. Most earthquakes, with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 5.0, within a period from 1985 to 1988, show evidence of shear-wave splitting. The preferred polarization of the first split-shear wave arrivals at PVP is nearly in N-S which is consistent with both regional maximum horizontal compressive stress direction and local subsurface fault strike, showing that shear-wave splitting is caused by liquid-filled cracks or fractures associated with the N-S faulting. The polarizations of first shear wave arrivals at GFP are roughly divided into two almost perpendicular directions, ENE-WSW and NNW-SSE, which are parallel or perpendicular to the strike of the geology or topography near the station. Because GFP is near the foothills of Santa Monica Mountains, the shear-wave arrivals may be disturbed by topographic irregularities and by subsurface dipping interfaces. Two examples at DHB clearly display shear-wave splitting. Their polarizations of shear wave are in the direction of N-S, which agree with the fragmentary surface and fracturing direction there. From some relatively reliable delay times, the crack densities at three stations are given, that is, 0.025 at PVP, 0.020 at GFP and 0.045 at DGB. No systematic change of shear-wave polarization is discovered in this study.

Notes: Abstract In this paper a theory of modal analysis for the dynamic response of fluid-structure systems is presented. A pair of generalized eigenvalue equations with three real symmetric matrices and their relationships are derived from the finite element equations in the form of structural displacements and fluid velocity potential. Generalized orthogonality relations of modal vectors are then developed. The response of the system to external excitation is derived in closed form by modal expansion. Two examples of the solution are given for illustration.

Notes: Abstract In this paper some research works of author's group on boundary element method for linear elastic and elasto-plastic problems are briefly summarized. The BE subrogions method and BE-FE coupling techniques are introduced, and some idea of the error estimation of BE solutions is presented.

Notes: Abstract HighT c superconductivity in the YBaCuO superconductor has been investigated through the quadrupole interaction of the probe nuclei99Tc. The quadrupole interactions were measured by the TDPAC method from 77 to 296 K. The probe nuclei99Tc were introduced into the YBaCuO superconducting specimen by diffusion. The derived electric quadrupole interaction parameters show that the probe nuclei are subject to a unique EFG interaction and occupy a substitutional lattice site in the YBaCuO superconductor. A strong EFG of 1019 V/cm2 was observed. The temperature dependence of the EFG exhibits a linear decrease with temperature increase. Anomalies of both EFG and ν were found in the superconducting transition temperature region. The role of the oxygen vacancies in the Cu−O chains is discussed.
