Notes: Summary The well known Lucas-Rapping (1969, 1970) U.S. Labour market model has been estimated with a simple disequilibrium estimation method. Neither the wage rate nor the employment level are found to adjust to clear the labour market within the unit time period. The elasticity of labour supply in the short run is found to be high which is consistent with the recent theories of real business cycle. Adjustment in employment towards equilibrium is faster than the adjustment in the wages. The rate of unemployment is satisfactorily explained by the excess supply rate without the need for the lagged unemployment rate. Thus our unemployment equation is superior to the Lucas-Rapping equation based on the equilibrium framework.

Notes: Abstract Although the non-Gaussian nature of many hydrologic time series is well recognized and their nonlinearity is suspected, neither property is well tested. This situation has existed partly because of a lack of appropriate tests. Recently Hinich (1982) has developed a test to test the linearity of time series which is based on the bispectral characteristics of the series. This test is used in this study to investigate the linearity and non-Gaussian characteristics of annual and daily rainfall and runoff series. The annual series may be modeled by linear models with Gaussian inputs. The daily data, on the other hand, often demonstrate nonlinear characteristics and are non-Gaussian as well.

Notes: Abstract A simple novel and stable modification procedure for the incorporation of ferro/ferricyanide on to carbon surfaces is reported. By analysis of the voltammetric behaviour of the modified electrode in pure supporting electrolyte it is established that the incorporated species correspond to Prussian blue.

Notes: Summary For the first time, Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized involving an intermediate Schiff base, indane-1,3-dione-2-imine-N-acetic acid the condensed product of ninhydrin and glycine. These coloured complexes were characterised by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, thermogravimetric analyses/differential thermal analysis, infrared, magnetic susceptibility, NMR and electronic spectral studies. Mechanisms for their formation have been proposed. The experimental studies reveal that the complexes possess octahedral stereochemistry whereas the Schiff base behaves as a monobasic tridentate ligand. A molecular structure for the metal complexes is also proposed. A comparative study of the antimicrobial activity of ninhydrin and the corresponding metal complexes againstEscherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus andStreptococcus faecalis has been undertaken and the results are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We consider a queueing model in which customers arrive in a Poisson stream to be served by one ofc servers. Each arriving customer enters a pool of active customers and starts generating requests for service at exponentially distributed time intervals at rate σ until he finds a free server and begins service. An analytical solution of this model is difficult and does not lend itself to numerical implementation. In this paper, we make a simplifying approximation, based on understanding of the physical behavior of the system, which yields an infinitesimal generator with a modified matrix-geometric equilibrium probability vector. That vector can be very efficiently computed even for high congestion levels. Illustrative numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the approximation as well as the effect of the retrial rate on the system behavior for various levels of congestion. This study shows how numerical results for analytically intractable systems can be obtained by combining intuition with efficient algorithmic methods.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes the theory of the toroidal Lie algebra, i.e. the Lie algebra of polynomial maps of a complex torus ℂ××ℂ× into a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra g. We describe the universal central extension t of this algebra and give an abstract presentation for it in terms of generators and relations involving the extended Cartan matrix of g. Using this presentation and vertex operators we obtain a large class of integrable indecomposable representations of t in the case that g is of type A, D, or E. The submodule structure of these indecomposable modules is described in terms of the ideal structure of a suitable commutative associative algebra.

Notes: Summary The influence of surface growth of inoculated cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) on subsurface properties of a brown earth, silt loam soil was studied in reconstituted flooded soil columns. One blue-green algae species, Nostoc muscorum, become dominant within the first 7 days of inoculation. In light control columns (not inoculated) a bryophyte, Barbula recurvirostra, was dominant although significant growth of indigenous blue-green algae occurred. The blue-green algae counts were in the range of 1×106 g-1 dry soil in the surface layer (0–0.7 cm) in both columns. Any effect of surface phototrophic growth on soil properties was restricted to the surface layer. In inoculated columns there was a twofold increase in microbial biomass and an eightfold increase in bacterial numbers by week 13. However, bacterial numbers declined so that there was only a 2.8-fold increase by week 21. Dehydrogenase (x2.1), urease (x2.8) and phosphatase (x3.1) activities and polysaccharides (+69%) increased by week 21 as a result of the blue-green algae inoculation along with a significant improvement in soil aggregation. However, similar increases occurred in the light control columns, indicating that given appropriate conditions of light and moisture indigenous species may be ultimately as effective as introduced species in bringing about biochemical and microbiological changes to soil.
