    Description: The work presented here shows that a solar power system can provide power on the order of one megawatt to a lunar base with a fairly high specific power. The main drawback to using solar power is still the high mass, and therefore, cost of supplying energy storage through the solar night. The use of cryogenic reactant storage in a fuel cell system, however, greatly reduces the total system mass over conventional energy storage schemes.

    Description: VLBI measurements were conducted immediately after the Loma Prieta earthquake and compared with VLBI gathered at Monterey, San Francisco, and Point Reyes since 1983 to obtain preearthquake deformation rates with respect to a North American reference frame. The estimated displacements at Monterey and San Francisco are consistent with the static displacements predicted on the basis of a coseismic slip model in which slip on the southern segment is shallower than slip on the northern segment of the fault rupture. Cartesian positions are presented at epoch 1990.0 of a set of VLBI fiducial stations and the three mobile sites in the earthquake's vicinity.

    Description: In-situ measurements of total reactive odd nitrogen NO(y), were made from the NASA DC-8 aircraft in the lower arctic stratosphere during the 1989 Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition. Throughout January and February, NO(y) mixing ratios were typically between 0.5 and 3 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) at altitudes between 10 and 12.5 km. During several flights late in the mission, events of unusually light NO(y) occurred with mixing ratios up to 12 ppbv at these altitudes. Simultaneous measurements of N2O, O3, and H2O during these events suggest that large changes in NO(y) are not expected. The elevated NO(y) values are interpreted as a vertical redistribution of NO(y) in the lower stratosphere resulting from gravitational sedimentation of aerosol particles containing HNO3. No evidence of the redistribution of H2O is noted, consistent with observations of denitrification without dehydration higher in the stratosphere.

    Description: A rocket observation of nitric oxide in the lower thermosphere during a time of high solar activity is compared to the results of calculations from a one-dimensional photochemical model. A solar soft X-ray flux of 0.75 erg/sq cm/s is needed to explain the observed NO densities. This result supports the theory that the variation in the low-latitude thermospheric NO is caused by variation in solar soft X-rays.

    Description: A comprehensive timeline of the growth, expansion, and recovery phases of a small isolated substorm with an expansion phase onset at 07:39 U.T. on January 28, 1983 is provided. The data sets examined include those from the electron-plasma, magnetometer, and energetic-particle instruments onboard ISEE-3. In addition to these data sets, a number of other spacecraft and ground-based data is utilized, including the magnetospheric energy-input rates evaluated in the upstream solar wind and imaging sequences used for examining auroral features during growth and expansion phases. Substorm energy-input and -output relationships are estimated quantitatively, and the timing and physical dimensions of the distant tail disturbance implied by global observations available are evaluated.

    Description: Results are presented from an October 17, 1988, flight of the NASA ER-2 stratospheric research aircraft. The flight sampled a nearly constant air mass at 20 km altitude, near 39 deg N latitude, from before sunrise until near noon. The instrumentation on board simultaneously measured NO, ClO, O3, temperature, and pressure. The measurements are combined with modeled photodissociation coefficients and known reaction kinetics to infer abundances of other important species, and the results are compared to previous estimates as a test for consistency in the understanding of the photochemical processes governing the species distributions.

    Notes: An intrinsic, unstructured model has been utilized to describethe startup dynamics of a continuous Caalginate-immobilized Zymomonas mobilis (ATCC 10988) fermentation. This model predicts, at least qualitatively, transients in the fermenter effluent glucose, ethanol, and biomass concentrations as well as radial gradients in immobilized-cell concentration and activity within the gelbiocatalysts. Predicted intrabiocatalyst gradients in immobilized-cell specific growth rate were used to calculate the corresponding gradients in intracellular RNA level based on a reported linear relationship between the two. Mathematical simulations of immobilized biomass concentration profiles and RNA content were verified using a novel, scanning microfluorimetry technique.

    Notes: We have used isoluminol steroid hormone conjugates in competitive heterogeneous chemiluminescence immunoassays (ClA) for estradiol, progesterone and estriol in body fluids. The assays did not require prior extraction of the steroid hormone with an organic solvent. Polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies, covalently coupled to polyacrylamide microspheres or adsorbed onto the plastic surface of microtritation plates via an intermediate second antibody, were used as solid-phase. The latter solid-phase system allows rapid processing of incubation mixtures. Sensitivie and reliable direct CIAs for estradiol in serum, progesterone in serum and in saliva and for estriol in saliva have been developed and their clinical utility has been assessed. Sensitivities ranged from 0.54 to 0.04nmol/l, and precision (% CV) ranged from 10% to 16%.

    Description: This article describes the design and initial tests of the GPS portion of a system for making seafloor geodesy measurements. In the planned system, GPS antennas on a floating platform will be used to measure the location of an acoustic transducer, attached below the platform, which interrogates an array of transponders on the seafloor. Since the GPS antennas are necessarily some distance above the transducer, a short-baseline GPS interferometer consisting of three antennas is used to measure the platform's orientation. A preliminary test of several crucial elements of the system was performed. The test involved a fixed antenna on the pier and a second antenna floating on a buoy about 80 m away. GPS measurements of the vertical component of this baseline, analyzed independently by two groups using different software, agree with each other and with an independent measurement within a centimeter. The first test of an integrated GPS/acoustic system took place in the Santa Cruz Basin off the coast of southern California in May 1990. In this test a much larger buoy, designed and built at SIO, was equipped with three GPS antennas and an acoustic transducer that interrogated a transponder on the ocean floor. Preliminary analysis indicates that the horizontal position of the transponder can be determined with a precision of about a centimeter.

    Description: A model is presented which depends on the preferential deposition of heating in the legs of a coronal loop and which produces a stable prominence-scale condensation at the loop top. Dynamic stability is attained by the subsequent adjustment of local parallel gravity by a magnetic inversion at the loop (or arcade) apex. A nonlinear numerical simulation of this process, which includes a deep chromosphere, a heating rate with a fixed dissipation length, and full solar gravity is described.
