    Notes: The origins of gyroremanent magnetization (GRM) in single domain particles are studied using a dynamic model based on the Landau–Lifschitz equation. The results show an asymmetry in the motion of the magnetic moment of a particle with three unequal axes of anisotropy. This asymmetry is interpreted in terms of an effective bias field which gives a good qualitative explanation of the origins of GRM.

    Notes: High-resolution spectra have been obtained for the predissociative N–H stretching overtone levels 5ν1 (15 120 cm−1) and 6ν1 (17 670 cm−1) of HN3, cooled in a free-jet expansion. The spectral bandwidth (Doppler limited at 0.007 cm−1 full width at half-maximum (FWHM) is sufficiently narrow to reveal the homogeneous linewidths of individual rovibrational transitions in the 6ν1 band, for which we previously measured the dissociation lifetime in time-domain experiments. Two distinct manifestations of vibrational coupling characterize the spectra: (a) anharmonic mixing of the N–H stretch with other vibrational motions to give a complex spectrum of vibrational eigenstates and (b) homogeneous widths of the resultant states determined by the dissociation lifetime. The results are discussed with reference to previous studies of overtone spectroscopy and intramolecular mixing. Time-domain measurements of dissociation rates are reported for four vibrational levels with zero-order labels 5ν1 +νx. Over the range 15 100 cm−1–17 700 cm−1, the dissociation rate increases monotonically with vibrational energy, with no apparent "mode-specific'' variations. This is interpreted in terms of the highly mixed character of any particular vibrational eigenstate that is excited.

    Notes: A high-power proportional temperature controller, using a fast infrared pyrometer, has been developed to change and control the temperature of metallic ribbon samples with microsecond response. The apparatus provides uniform and controlled heating for time-resolved x-ray scattering studies of structural phase transitions. When high-power pulse heating is used, the system is capable of increasing the sample temperature at rates in excess of 106 K/s, without overshoot and with subsequent control to ±1 K at temperatures as low as 650 K.

    Description: At Radok Lake, northern Prince Charles Mountains, more than 2500 m of Permian Amery Group strata in the Beaver Lake graben are downfaulted against a Proterozoic metamorphic basement. An irregular blanket of late Cenozoic Pagodroma Tillite, up to 100 m thick, overlies the Permian strata and Proterozoic basement. The metamorphic basement comprises repeatedly deformed, high-grade felsic, mafic, aluminous and minor calc-silicate rocks derived from igneous and sedimentary precursors. Low- to medium-pressure granulite-facies metamorphism, assumed to be the ~1000 Ma event widely recorded in the East Antarctic Shield, was followed by incipient to moderate amphibolite-facies retrogression. Three folding events are recognized. Sporadic occurrences of pseudotachylite in the basement represent seismic faulting after substantial uplift and erosion. At the southern end of Radok Lake the Permian coarse alluvial fan facies, the Radok Conglomerate, is overlain disconformably by the Dart Fields Conglomerate, a basal member of the Bainmedart Coal Measures. Five kilometres along strike the deltaic Panorama Point beds, containing sideritic ironstone strata, are overlain conformably by arkosic sandstones of the basal Bainmedart Coal Measures. The Amery Group is intruded by two alnöite sills and at least five altered alkaline mafic dykes. The Pagodroma Tillite contains reworked marine microfossils and records the erosion of higher latitude Cenozoic marine sequences by an expanding ancestral Lambert Glacier.

    Description: Ten Landsat Thematic Mapper images together show Ice Streams E, D and most of Ice Stream C on Siple Coast, West Antarctica. The images are interpreted to reveal aspects of both spatial and temporal evolution of the ice streams. Onset of ice-stream flow appears to occur at distributed sites within the ice-stream catchment, and the apparent enhanced flow continues in channels until they join, forming the main ice stream. Most crevassing on these ice streams is associated with features of horizontal dimensions between 5 and 20 km. We suggest these features are caused by bed structures which may be an important source of restraint to ice flow, similar to ice rumples on ice shelves. A pattern of features near the grounding line of the now-stagnant Ice Stream C are interpreted as having formed because there was a period of reduced flux before the ice stream stopped.
