    Description: The interaction of the T cell receptor for antigen (TCR) with its antigen-major histocompatibility complex ligand is difficult to study because both are cell surface multimers. The TCR consists of two chains (alpha and beta) that are complexed to the five or more nonpolymorphic CD3 polypeptides. A soluble form of the TCR was engineered by replacing the carboxyl termini of alpha and beta with signal sequences from lipid-linked proteins, making them susceptible to enzymatic cleavage. In this manner, TCR heterodimers can be expressed independently of the CD3 polypeptides and in significant quantities (0.5 milligram per week).     Description: The pacemaker role of the suprachiasmatic nucleus in a mammalian circadian system was tested by neural transplantation by using a mutant strain of hamster that shows a short circadian period. Small neural grafts from the suprachiasmatic region restored circadian rhythms to arrhythmic animals whose own nucleus had been ablated. The restored rhythms always exhibited the period of the donor genotype regardless of the direction of the transplant or genotype of the host.     Description: Some 13 million scalar magnetic field data points that have been collected from the world's ocean areas reside in the collection of the National Geophysical Data Center. In order to derive a suitable data set for modeling the geomagnetic field of the earth, each ship track is divided into 220 km segments. The distribution of the reduced data in position, time and local time is discussed. The along-track filtering process described has proved to be an effective method of condensing large numbers of shipborne magnetic data into a manageable and meaningful data set for field modeling. This process also provides the benefits of smoothing short-wavelength crystal anomalies, discarding data recorded during magnetically noisy periods, and assigning reasonable error estimates to be utilized in the least squares modeling.

    Description: This program consists of two tasks: (1) development of a data base of physical observations of near-earth asteroids and establishment of a network to coordinate observations of newly discovered earth-approaching asteroids; and (2) a simulation of the surface of low-activity comets.     Description: A method for exploring the topographic modulation of clear-sky incoming radiation using a two-stream atmospheric model together with digital elevation data is presented to obtain the temporal and spatial distribution of this energy. Utilizing this methodology for the Konza Prairie, it is observed that the variance and spatial autocorrelation of the simulated radiation data changed with sun angle and elevation grid spacing. An analytical formula that describes the behavior of the variance as a function of optical depth, sun angle, and mean terrain slope can be developed by considering direct solar radiation variability on a constant-slope terrain which has a uniform albedo and a uniform distribution of slopes. The decrease in mean slope and the increase in slope and autocorrelation is attributed to a loss of some of the shorter-wavelength terrain features at coarser grid spacings.

    Description: A complete all-sky sample of objects, flux-limited at 60 microns, has been extracted from the data base of the IRAS. The sample consists of 5014 objects, of which 2649 are galaxies and 13 are not yet identified. In order to study large-scale structure with this sample, it must be free of systematic biases. Corrections are applied for a major systematic effect in the flux densities listed in the IRAS Point Source Catalog: sources resolved by the IRAS beam have flux densities systematically underestimated. In addition, accurate flux densities are obtained for sources flagged as variable, or of moderate flux quality at 60 microns. The IRAS detectors suffered radiation-induced responsivity enhancement (hysteresis) due to crossings of the satellite scans across the Galactic plane; this effect is measured and is shown to be negligible.

    Description: The Arecibo 305 m telescope has been used to observe radio bursts from flare stars at 430 and 1415 MHz. Dynamic spectra of the emission with bandwidths of 10 MHz in the former case and 40 MHz in the latter are recorded. For AD Leo, the microwave burst emission was 100 percent right circularly polarized, achieved brightness temperatures near 10 to the 16th K, was generally broadband in character, but was superposed with finite structures in both frequency and time. Quasi-periodic pulsations were clearly present as well as a sudden reduction feature. For YZ CMi, the emission was 100 percent left circularly polarized and was relatively broadband with fine structures. Instabilities driven by anisotropies in the electron distribution, particularly the loss-cone distribution, are considered to account for the coherent radiation.

    Description: Airborne measurements of NO2/NO ratios in the free troposphere, obtained using two-photon LIF (TP-LIF) and chemiluminescence (CL) detectors during the NASA Global Tropospheric Experiment Chemical Instrumentation Test and Evaluation 2 (CITE 2) program in summer 1986, are analyzed and compared with the predictions of a photochemical model. The derivation of the model is outlined, with an emphasis on the role of peroxy radicals in the fast photochemical cycling of NO and NO2 and the production of O3; the CITE 2 instruments and flight protocols are described; and the results are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussed in detail. It was found that on three CITE 2 flights the CL data were systematically greater than the TP-LIF data; when these data were removed, the averaged values of the two instruments agreed to within 1 percent. The NO2/NO ratios predicted by the model are shown to be consistent with the measurements, although usually 20-25 percent lower.

    Description: The spectra of six additional A-type stars have been obtained at low resolution between 1200 and 1900 A with the IUE. The energy distributions of four of the stars match that of the field horizontal branch (FHB) distribution in Huenemoerder et al. (1984) while those of the other two do not. Three of the FHB stars fall above a line in the C(19 - V)0 vs. (b-y)0 diagram; however, HD 60825 is anomalously blue for its C(19 - V) color.

    Description: The general features of a new numerical simulation of planetesimal accretion which models multiple heliocentric distance zones, together with a detailed model for the planetesimal size and orbital distribution in each zone, are described. A restricted version of this model which allows only a single heliocentric distance zone has been used to test the validity of the code by comparing with results from earlier authors when the same physical phenomena are included. Generally, very good agreement is found.
