    Notes: This work deals with the modification reaction of amylose with 1-naphthylacetyl chloride using pyridine as catalyst and the DMF/LiCl system as solvent. The structure of the resulting polymers was determined by IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. A linear dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration of polymer, 1-naphthylacetyl chloride and pyridine was found. The activation energy was found to be 32,4 kJ/mol. The hydrolysis in the heterogeneous phase showed that the release of the active compound from tablets is dependent on the hydrophilic character of the modified amylose as well as on the pH value of the medium.

    Notes: A statistical study of the dependence between various critical fusion temperatures of a certain kind of coal and its chemical components is carried out.     Notes: Modern instrumentation in chemistry routinely generates two-dimensional (second-order) arrays of data. Considering that most analyses need to compare several samples, the analyst ends up with a three-dimensional (third-order) array which is difficult to visualize or interpret with the conventional statistical tools.Some of these data arrays follow the so-called trilinear model, \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm R}_{ijk} = \sum\limits_{r = 1}^N {{\rm X}_{ir} {\rm Y}_{jr} {\rm Z}_{kr} + {\rm Error}_{ijk} } $$\end{document} These trilinear arrays of data are known to have unique factor analysis decompositions which correspond to the true physical factors that form the data, i.e. given the array ∝, a unique solution can be found in many cases for each order X, Y and Z. This is in contrast to the well-known second-order bilinear data factor analysis, where the abstract solutions obtained are not unique and at best cannot be easily compared with the underlying physical factors owing to a rotational ambiguity.Trilinear decompositions have had the disadvantage, however, that a non-linear optimization with many parameters is necessary to reach a least-squares solution. This paper will introduce a method for reducing the problem to a rectangular generalized eigenvalue-eigenvector equation where the eigenvectors are the contravariant form (pseudo-inverse) of the actual factors. It is shown that the method works well when the factors are linearly independent in at least two orders (e.g. Xir and Yjr are full rank matrices).Finally, it is shown how trilinear decompositions relate to multicomponent calibration, curve resolution and chemical analysis.

    Notes: Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been utilized in several studies on polymerization kinetics, at different heating rates. However, there are several factors affecting the precision of kinetic parameters. In this work, the activation energy of urethane-bond formation between 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate and diethylene glycol is reported, the latter being in excess in order to minimize problems such as thermal transitions and incomplete reaction in the final step. The DSC technique was applied at different heating rates. Both the equal conversion and equal conversion rate options of the method are discussed. The latter appears to be a more adequate option for the system studied here. The results obtained show a good agreement with the model used.

    Notes: A flow-injection analysis (FIA) system utilizing a horseradish peroxidase-modified amperometric electrode is described. The enzyme was immobilized through adsorption onto a glassy carbon electrode, and the system is used to determine hydrogen peroxide at submicromolar levels. The response is based on the enzymatic reduction of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of hydroquinone acting as an electron mediator. The oxidized quinone produced in the enzymatic reaction is reduced at the electrode, and the reduction current was found to be proportional to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Calibration curves were found to be linear between 2.5 × 10-8 and 1.0 × 10-6 M, and the method has a detection limit of 1.0 × 10-8 M.

    Notes: Controlled adsorptive accumulation of the food additives (azo dyes) ponceau 4R, Allura Red, and carmoisine at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) provided the basis for their determination by stripping voltammetry at nanomolar concentration levels. The adsorptive stripping response was evaluated with respect to experimental parameters such as accumulation potential, preconcentration time, pH, and bulk concentration. Best results were obtained using an ammonia buffer as the supporting electrolyte; depending on the dye, detection limits of 0.071, 0.076, and 0.043 nM were, respectively, achieved in pure dye solutions. The simultaneous determination was carried out by means of the generalized standard addition method.

    Notes: The separation of proteins by free-flow zone electrophoresis is generally impaired by a number of secondary effects which cause spreading of the protein streams with resultant loss in resolution. A strategy is outlined, based on experimental observations and numerical modeling, which allows the operating conditions and separation chamber dimensions to be chosen so as to obtain complete separation of two proteins of known mobility. This approach takes into account some dispersive phenomena such as molecular diffusion, electroosmosis and residence time gradients. In some cases, the right operating conditions cannot be achieved on earth and electrophoresis separations in microgravity may then be justified.

    Notes: Raman spectra of 1.5-dimethylcytosine (DMC) as the solid and in aqueous solution are reported. A tentative assignment of Raman bands is made. Surface-enhanced Raman spectra obtained on silver and on copper colloids show appreciable differences from the normal unenhanced Raman spectra. The geometry of DMC-metal interactions is discussed.

    Description: The anthropogenic affectation was evaluated on the coast N of the Gulf of Batabanó in May 2003 (corresponding to the provinces of Matanzas and Havana), in areas located in the line of the coast. The results were compared with the historical information of the sector. In the coast N and the Ensenada of the Broa, the parameters oxygen saturation, DBO5 and DQO showed characteristic high values of eutrofication. The biggest contribution in the Cianoficies was in the near coastal areas to sources of organic contamination. In the case of the nutrients they show specific data of mesothrofic waters with tendency to the eutrofization and the silts presented a high affectation for toxic metals. The area near to Guanímar is distinguished to present conditions of organic contamination that favor heterothrofic conditions, corroborated by a prevalence of the processes of mineralization of the organic matter over primary production and lows values of fitoplankton concentration. On the contrary, in the region of Surgidero of Batabanó, the processes of synthesis of organic matter prevail suggested by a high primary production, and concentration of fitoplankton, with low breathing levels and mineralization of the organic matter, that indicates that the system is behaving autothrofically. In a general way, this sector is very affected by the anthropogenic impact. The information obtained is of great importance for the development of the fishing and tourist industries in the area.

    Description: The nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the vertebrate kidney. It is composed of a glomerulus, the site of ultrafiltration, and a renal tubule, along which the filtrate is modified. Although widely regarded as a vertebrate adaptation, 'nephron-like' features can be found in the excretory systems of many invertebrates, raising the possibility that components of the vertebrate excretory system were inherited from their invertebrate ancestors. Here we show that the insect nephrocyte has remarkable anatomical, molecular and functional similarity to the glomerular podocyte, a cell in the vertebrate kidney that forms the main size-selective barrier as blood is ultrafiltered to make urine. In particular, both cell types possess a specialized filtration diaphragm, known as the slit diaphragm in podocytes or the nephrocyte diaphragm in nephrocytes. We find that fly (Drosophila melanogaster) orthologues of the major constituents of the slit diaphragm, including nephrin, NEPH1 (also known as KIRREL), CD2AP, ZO-1 (TJP1) and podocin, are expressed in the nephrocyte and form a complex of interacting proteins that closely mirrors the vertebrate slit diaphragm complex. Furthermore, we find that the nephrocyte diaphragm is completely lost in flies lacking the orthologues of nephrin or NEPH1-a phenotype resembling loss of the slit diaphragm in the absence of either nephrin (as in human congenital nephrotic syndrome of the Finnish type, NPHS1) or NEPH1. These changes markedly impair filtration function in the nephrocyte.
