    Notes: Abstract The beta-gamma spectroscopic study of22O is presented. This nucleus, produced as a projectile-like fragment from the interaction of a 60 MeV/n40Ar beam with a Be target, has been separated by the LISE spectrometer. Several gamma rays from22O decay have been observed, from which a half-life of (2.25±0.15)s has been determined. Accurate excitation energies have been deduced for several states in22F. A partial beta decay scheme of22O has been established. Experimental results have been compared with shell model calculations.

    Notes: Abstract The Convex Linearization method (CONLIN) exhibits many interesting features and it is applicable to a broad class of structural optimization problems. The method employs mixed design variables (either direct or reciprocal) in order to get first order, conservative approximations to the objective function and to the constraints. The primary optimization problem is therefore replaced with a sequence of explicit approximate problems having a simple algebraic structure. The explicit subproblems are convex and separable, and they can be solved efficiently by using a dual method approach. In this paper, a special purpose dual optimizer is proposed to solve the explicit subproblem generated by the CONLIN strategy. The maximum of the dual function is sought in a sequence of dual subspaces of variable dimensionality. The primary dual problem is itself replaced with a sequence of approximate quadratic subproblems with non-negativity constraints on the dual variables. Because each quadratic subproblem is restricted to the current subspace of non zero dual variables, its dimensionality is usually reasonably small. Clearly, the Hessian matrix does not need to be inverted (it can in fact be singular), and no line search process is necessary. An important advantage of the proposed maximization method lies in the fact that most of the computational effort in the iterative process is performed with reduced sets of primal variables and dual variables. Furthermore, an appropriate active set strategy has been devised, that yields a highly reliable dual optimizer.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, various methods based on convex approximation schemes are discussed, that have demonstrated strong potential for efficient solution of structural optimization problems. First, theconvex linearization method (CONLIN) is briefly described, as well as one of its recent generalizations, themethod of moving asymptotes (MMA). Both CONLIN and MMA can be interpreted as first order convex approximation methods, that attempt to estimate the curvature of the problem functions on the basis of semi-empirical rules. Attention is next directed toward methods that use diagonal second derivatives in order to provide a sound basis for building up high quality explicit approximations of the behaviour constraints. In particular, it is shown how second order information can be effectively used without demanding a prohibitive computational cost. Various first and second order approaches are compared by applying them to simple problems that have a closed form solution.

    Notes: The primary goal of this paper is to show how second derivative information can be used in an effective way in structural optimization problems. The basic idea is to generate such an information at the expense of only one more ‘virtual load case’ in the sensitivity analysis part of the finite element code. To achieve this goal a primal-dual approach is employed, that can also be interpreted as a sequential quadratic programming method.Another objective is to relate the proposed method to the well known family of approximation concepts techniques, where the primary optimization problem is transformed into a sequence of non-linear explicit subproblems. When restricted to diagonal second derivatives, the new approach can be viewed as a recursive convex programming method, similar to the ‘Convex Linearization’ method (CONLIN), and to its recent generalization, the ‘Method of Moving Asymptotes’ (MMA).This new method has been successfully tested on simple problems that can be solved in closed form, as well as on sizing optimization of trusses. In all cases the method converges faster than CONLIN, MMA or other approximation techniques based on reciprocal variables.

    Notes: The addition of mercaptoacetic acid upon radical initiation onto carboxytelechelic polybutadienes (1) which have an average mass M̄n = 4400 gives polyacids having about twelve carboxylic groups. The reaction is followed by 13C NMR, 1H NMR and by GPC. The thiol disappears according to a first order law. Besides, the value of the modification rate obtained from acido-basic titration confirms that obtained from NMR. In a second step, 2,3-epoxypropyl methacrylate is added to the acid groups to obtain an insaturated and carboxylated polydienic oligomer 5. An application of these oligomers processed with a reactive diluter shows their high cross-linking ability under UV irradiation and confirms the improvement of the flexibility properties compared to those of traditional insaturated oligomers.

    Description: CD4 is a cell surface glycoprotein that is thought to interact with nonpolymorphic determinants of class II major histocompatibility (MHC) molecules. CD4 is also the receptor for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), binding with high affinity to the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein, gp120. Homolog-scanning mutagenesis was used to identify CD4 regions that are important in class II MHC binding and to determine whether the gp120 and class II MHC binding sites of CD4 are related. Class II MHC binding was abolished by mutations in each of the first three immunoglobulin-like domains of CD4. The gp120 binding could be abolished without affecting class II MHC binding and vice versa, although at least one mutation examined reduced both functions significantly. These findings indicate that, while there may be overlap between the gp120 and class II MHC binding sites of CD4, these sites are distinct and can be separated.
