    Notes: The conformation of the tetradecapeptide hormone bombesin has been studied in buffer and in the presence of lysolecithin micelles, using static and dynamic fluorescence, CD, and one- and two-dimensional nmr. The results obtained show that in buffer bombesin is present in an extended flexible chain, with no evidence for any ordered secondary structure. A marked change in the CD spectrum is observed changing from buffer to the lipid suspension. Concomitantly, the 1H-nmr spectrum of bombesin, in a D2O lipid dispersion, shows the persistence of resonances due to exchangeable protons and in similar conditions the fluorescence intensity increases. We think therefore that these results strongly support the hypothesis that bombesin interacts with the lipid phase, assuming ordered secondary structure. Finally, the marked dependence of tryptophan fluorescence quantum efficiency and order parameter from the hormone concentration in the presence of lysolecithin but not in buffer leads to the conclusion that bombesin can associate into the lipid matrix.

    Notes: The extent of correlations between functional groups that can form hydrogen bonds with solvent molecules has been estimated. From the observed distance distribution of functional groups on the surfaces of several proteins, and from the extent of correlation between pairs of such functional grups, we conclude that the assumption of independence of functional groups made in part I is probably a good approximation. The reason is that even when correlations exist there is, on average, cancellation of the positive and negative correlations. The relevance of hydrogen bonding with the solvent to the relative stability of different conformers of biopolymers is also indicated.

    Notes: The kinetics of the emulsion polymerization of butadiene was investigated using Dresinate 214 as emulsifier and three dissociative initiators, viz. potassium peroxodisulfate, 4,4′-azobis-(4-cyanopentanoic acid) and 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile. All experiments were conducted in the presence of a thiol as chain transfer agent, as usual in diene-polymerizations. The polymerization rate in interval II, Rpol, was found to be highly insensitive to changes in the initiator concentration (Rpol ∝ [I]0,08). Primary radicals are generated in large abundance in interval I as compared with the final particle number, indicating that the initiator efficiency with regard to particle nucleation is very low. The development of particle number as a function of conversion at several emulsifier concentrations shows that limited coagulation is occurring in the present system. Rpol depends on the emulsifier concentration with an exponent of 0,61, while the final particle number after cessation of coagulation depends on the emulsifier concentration to the 1,6th power. As a consequence the average number of radicals per particle must be a function of particle size, because the monomer concentration in the latex particles is approximately constant in interval II. A certain analogy in behaviour between the emulsion polymerization of various polar monomers, kinetically dominated by radical desorption, and the emulsion polymerization of butadiene, suggests that similar events determine the kinetic course in the present system.

    Notes: A non-parametric method for supervised pattern recognition is presented. The method is of the class modelling type, meaning that a classification rule is developed for each class, using the dissimilarities between the objects of the class. The dissimilarities between the objects within a class are related to the distances between all pairs of training objects. As distance metric, a measure is proposed that takes the correlation between the interval-scale variables into account, and that moreover can be used for mixed types of variables. The classification rule is based on the construction of a boundary in the measurement space. For the determination of the class boundary, several strategies are proposed and compared.The performance of the technique is evaluated on the basis of several data sets. Comparison with the class modelling technique UNEQ shows its usefulness for practical application.

    Notes: The wavelength sensitivity of unpigmented 100 mil thick ABS exposed to sunlight and filtered xenon are radiation was determined by the sharp cut filter technique based on three types of photochemical changes: bleaching, yellowing and loss in impact strength. Bleaching of the yellow-colored species formed in the processed material is caused by wavelengths between 380 and 525 nm with maximum color change by the 475-485 nm region. Photochemical yellowing is due to wavelengths between 300 and 380 nm with all wavelengths being almost equally effective. The spectral sensitivity based on change in impact strength shifts from the UV to the visible region as photochemical yellowing progresses. Addition of two stabilizers, a benzotriazole ultraviolet absorber and a hindered amine stabilizer, shifts the wavelength sensitivity based on yellowing to wavelengths shorter than 330 nm, but has no influence on the spectral effects based on impact strength. It is postulated that the rate of yellowing is reduced mainly by the ultraviolet absorber and stabilization against loss in impact strength is due largely to the hindered amine. Differences in rates and spectral response of the three types of photochemical changes indicate that they are due to different initiating mechanisms and thus require different types of stabilization. The significance to stability testing is discussed.

    Notes: Electroninitiated polymerization of bis(trichlorophenoxo)-N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylene diamine copper(II) was achieved in acetonitrile at various peak potentials of the monomer. A constant potential approach was selected in polymerization reactions. Electrolyses were carried out under air, nitrogen, and oxygen atmospheres. Structural analyses of the polymers were done by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR FT-IR spectroscopy. Molecular weights of the polymers were determined by vapor pressure (isopiestic) method.

    Notes: Digitalis lanata cell cultures grown as small undifferentiated aggregates in suspension culture can be redifferentiated into green embryos that produce cardenolides. The possibility of using a statistical (Box-Wilson) experimental design to study the effects of four different variables on growth, differentiation, and cardenolide production of D. lanata tissue cultures are investigated. The results of the analyses were processed by linear regression analysis. Mathematical models explaining the effects of the variables were developed. The concentration of maltose and the NO3-—NH4+ ratio were found to be significant variables for both growth and cardenolide production. The size of the inoculum was also important.

    Notes: Biological processes may be used to convert gas phase substrates, such as H2S, CH4, CO, H2, and CO2, to useful products. Utilization of these substrates is often a mass transfer limited process, first requiring absorption across the gas-liquid interface and diffusion through the culture medium to the cell surface, prior to reaction. This article presents a method for determining fermentation parameters of a gaseous substrate in convenient batch vessels using a modified Monod model. The procedure is illustrated with experimental data for the conversion of carbon monoxide to acetate by the strict anaerobe Peptostreptococcus productus.
