Notes: The effects of oxygen precipitation and surface films (SiO2 vs Si3N4) on P diffusion at 1100 °C in Czochralski silicon have been studied. With a fast precipitation rate, P diffusion under both kinds of films is enhanced because of the supersaturation of Si interstitials caused by oxygen precipitation. The larger enhancement in P diffusion under Si3N4 than that under SiO2 covered with Si3N4 is attributed to the slower recombination velocity of interstitials at the Si3N4/Si interface. P diffusion in a denuded zone behaves like that in float-zone Si until the interstitials generated under that zone arrive at the interface.

Notes: Summary Acute or chronic injection of RX 77368 (a TRH analogue; 1 mg/kg s.c.) stimulated oxygen consumption (VO2) and brown adipose tissue activity in the rat, and decreased weight gain Other TRH analogues (CG 3509, RGH 2202) and TRH itself also stimulated VO2. These thermogenic actions are probably mediated centrally by stimulation of sympathetic outflow to brown fat.

Notes: Abstract Personal monitoring (PM) for respirable suspended particulate matter (RSP) of thirty subjects was performed as part of an air pollution health effects study conducted in Houston, Texas. Parallel RSP measurements were performed in the study subjects' homes and two fixed site monitoring stations. The participants' daytime activities were independently recorded by study techicians. These data were used to characterize RSP concentrations in each microenvironment visited by the participants. Four estimates of daytime exposure to RSP were calculated based on two different microenvironmental models, and home and fixed site mean daytime RSP concentrations. These estimates were compared to mean daytime personal exposure from PM. Hourly estimates of exposure were calculated from a microenvironmental model and mean hourly home RSP concentrations and compared to hourly PM data. The results of the study indicate that, as in the case of NO2, it is important to characterize indoor microenvironmental RSP concentrations according to location, sources, and concurrent activities, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Stratification of concentrations according to sources present and self-reported activity can lead to misclassification of exposures. For RSP and, probably, other pollutants with indoor sources and with short exposure integration times, adequate measures of exposure can only be obtained with very detailed and complex microenvironmental models or comprehensive personal monitoring.

Notes: Abstract Patterns of net nitrogen mineralization and nitrification in 0–7.5 cm deep mineral soils of different stages (seral ages 1, 6 and 20 years) of a post-fire coastal fynbos succession were assayed using laboratory andin situ incubations. No evidence of increasing allelopathic inhibition of nitrification with successional development was found as NO3−N was the predominant product at all seral stages and the NO3−N∶NH4−N ratio remained constant. Rather the results of field incubations of soils beneathProtea repens stands of different successional ages showed that increased mineralization and nitrification appeared to be associated with increased soil total N content rather than with successional age. Further, the incubation of soilsin situ during the dry summer months showed that NO3−N production appears to be closely related to temperature and soil moisture content, both of which are variables that vary throughout succession due to the changing structure of the vegetation.

Notes: Abstract Endoparasitic copepods are very numerous in Indo-West Pacific corals. In West Indian corals they were thought to be absent, but recent studies have shown that a varied endoparasitic copepod fauna exists as well. Striking is the taxonomic composition of the coral-inhabiting copepods: In the Indo-West Pacific Lichomolgidae and Xarifiidae are the dominant families, both are absent in the West Indies. On the other hand, Corallovexiidae and Asterocheridae dominate in the West Indies; the former family is absent and the latter is apparently rare and not very diversified in the Indo-West Pacific.

Notes: Abstract The discovery of a new species ofRhipidogammarus, Rh. nivariae n. sp., in water supply shafts of Tenerife (Canary Islands), presents an interesting biogeographic problem. Up to now, members of the genus were known exclusively from stygohabitats in the peri-Mediterranean belt. Its sister-genus is found in very shallow waters of the Mediterranean, and on morphological grounds the genus seems to have got adapted only fairly recently to continental hypogean waters. The occurrence of a member ofRhipidogammarus on an oceanic island like Tenerife can be explained by one of the following two scenarios: (1) Tenerife is a fragment of the African plate, or (2) the island's volcanic outcrops arose from a very shallow submarine bank and drifted later into deeper waters.

Notes: Abstract Chenopodium rubrum plants, induced to flower by three cycles of 12 h darkness and 12 h light, produced 42% less ethylene than vegetative plants kept under continuous light. Plants that had each dark cycle broken by 2 h light in the middle did not flower and produced almost as much ethylene as the vegetative plants. Shoots and roots of plants of all three experimental treatments had a similar content of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), the mean amounting to about 2 nmol · g−1 dry weight. Also the content of N-malonyl-ACC (MACC) was similar in shoots of all three treatments. MACC content in roots was shown to be much higher, especially in the treatments with three dark periods (about 85 nmol · g−1 dry weight). When labeled [2,3-14C] ACC was administered, the relative contents of ACC and MACC were very similar among all three treatments. The only process influenced by flower induction was ACC conversion to ethylene. Induced plants converted 36% less ACC than the vegetative ones. Plants subjected to night-break converted almost as much ACC to ethylene as vegetative plants. It is concluded that flower induction in the short-day plantChenopodium rubrum decreases ethylene production by decreasing their capability of converting ACC to ethylene.
