Notes: In order to find a series of monomers with high reactivities in copolymerization and still undergo free radical ringopening polymerization, a series of cyclic acrylates were synthesized and polymerized to insert a pyruvate ester into the backbone of the polymer. In order to discover groups other than the carbonyl groups and strained rings that would promote free radical ring-opening polymerization, a series of spiro methylenecyclohexadienes were prepared and polymerized to give a polymer with a p-phenylene group in the backbone.

Notes: The weighted intrinsic viscosities of polysaccharide mixtures in dilute aqueous solutions have been studied. The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate that average intrinsic viscosities would scale with the weight fraction of the individual components for polysaccharide mixtures in 0.5N NaOH(aq). The polysaccharides examined in this study were composed of polymers differing in their molecular weights, degree of branching, and bond linkages. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment was observed for the three different mixed polymer systems examined. This observation validates certain aspects of proposed theoretical treatments which employ this fundamental assumption and allows for further advances in experimental analytical developments of water-soluble polymer systems.

Notes: Light scattering studies on dispersions formed by phase separation of a polymer-solvent-non-solvent mixture show that the dispersions comprise charged droplets of the polymer-rich phase. The charge number is not large, and data on the electrophoretic-scattering and the dynamic scattering in the absence of an external electric field are both consistent with distribution of charge among the droplets. Data on the dependence of the static scattering on concentration and scattering angle show that the droplets are also disperse in radius. The data are discussed in terms of an interaction potential among the charged droplets relating the electrostatic interactions to the charge number and radius of the droplets, and the ionic strength of the solvent.

Notes: Lithiated isopropylidene-telechelic polyisobutylenes (i.e., PIBs capped with end groups) are most interesting novel intermediates for further transformations, e.g., functionalization, polymerization. This report concerns model lithiation experiments of 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene (TM1P) that guided us toward the subsequent quantitative lithiation of isopropylidene-telechelic PIBs. Thus, lithiation of TM1P with, n-, s-, and t-butyllithium, in the presence of various complexing agents (i.e., TMEDA, t-BuOK, 1,2-DPE, CH3OCH2CH2OCH3, THF, and 12-crown-4) followed by silylation with Me3SiCl (for the purpose of quantitation) gave three products: 2(trimethylsilylmethyl)-4,4-dimethyl-1-pentene (TM1P-Si), 2(trimethylsilylmethyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-pentene (TM2P-Si2). The relative product composition strongly depends on the BuLi/complexing agent ratio and temperature. Among the different butyllithiums and complexing agents the best overall results were obtained with the s-BuLi/TMEDA combination. Complete lithiation of TM1P with minimum dilithiation was obtained using the molar ratio [s-BuLi]: [TMEDA]: [TM1P] = 2 : 2 : 1. The apparent activation energy of lithiation by s-BuLi/TMEDA was found to be 6.7 ± 0.8 kcal/mol. Guided by TM1P model experiments, quantitative monolithiation of isopropylidene-capped polyisobutylene (including ca. 4% chain and isomerization) was achieved using the molar ratio [s-BuLi] : [TMEDA] : [C—C] = 5 : 4 : 1.

Notes: The mechanical anisotropy of oriented PVDF sheet is examined using a variety of experimental techniques. The mechanical behavior is similar to that observed previously for low-density polyethylene and nylon and consistent with a parallel lamellar crystalline structure. The s31 compliance is reduced in magnitude by drawing to higher draw ratio, but the reduction in the piezoelectric coefficient d31 is less marked, suggesting that the piezoelectric response cannot be related solely to dimensional changes under stress. Drawing to high draw ratio increases the s33 compliance, and this is further increased by introducing voids. The corresponding d33 piezoelectric coefficient is not changed significantly by drawing to high draw ratio, or by the introduction of voids, again indicating that the piezoelectric behavior relates to factors other than dimensional changes.

Notes: The static and dynamic structures of butanediol diglycidal ether (BDGE) cured with phthalic anhydride are determined using high resolution solid state 13C-NMR. Crosslink and junction point resonances are identified by varying the cure state and confirmed using chemical shift calculations. As crosslinking increases, the variety of structures creates a broad distribution of chemical shifts and thus a single broad resonance for the crosslink region. The crosslinking also influences the dynamic structures of the network as indiated by the changes in the various relaxation times of the system. Motions in both the megahertz and kilohertz regimes decrease with cure due to the increasing motional restrictions imposed by the crosslinks.

Notes: Electroinitiated polymerizations can be carried out by direct electron transfer via constant potential electrolysis.1-3 In doing so, the anodic (Ep, a) and the cathodic (Ep, c) potentials of the monomers must be measured by cyclic voltammetry. The cathodic peak potentials of halophenols were measured on Pt0 electrode versus Ag0/Ag+ in acetonitrile.Electroinitiated polymerization of bis(pyridine), bis(4-chloro-2,6-dibromophenoxide) copper (II) complex was studied in dimethylformamide-tetrabutylammonium fluoroborate by direct electron transfer from the cathode. Poly(phenylene oxides) obtained from the anolyte revealed that the monomer undergoes 1,2 as well as 1,4 addition reactions.Lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies of the monomers were calculated by Hückel molecular orbital theory. The experimental Ep, c values were correlated to theoretical LUMO energies and electron densities using a multivariable linear regression model.

Notes: The nine independent stiffness constants Cpq for rolled nylon 66 at thickness reduction ratios λt = 2.4, 4.9, 7.6 have been measured from -40 to 50°C by an ultrasonic method at 10 MHz. Analysis of x-ray pole figures indicates that at high λt the material has a uniplanar-axial texture, with hydrogen-bonded (010) planes parallel to the roll plane and the molecular chains along the roll direction. The mechanical behavior is determined not only by the alignment of molecular chains and hydrogen bonds but also by the microfibrillar morphology. On the basis of this idea the magnitudes of the tensile moduli along the three principal axes can be understood in terms of the Takayanagi model. The effects of water absorption have also been investigated.
