Notes: In order to find a series of monomers with high reactivities in copolymerization and still undergo free radical ringopening polymerization, a series of cyclic acrylates were synthesized and polymerized to insert a pyruvate ester into the backbone of the polymer. In order to discover groups other than the carbonyl groups and strained rings that would promote free radical ring-opening polymerization, a series of spiro methylenecyclohexadienes were prepared and polymerized to give a polymer with a p-phenylene group in the backbone.

Notes: A series of prototrophic fragile strains of different ploidy (2n, 3n and 4n) has been genetically constructed on the basis ofhalopoid srb1 containing segregants of the fragile Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant VY 1160. The strains have been characterized by several criteria. In regard to generation time, biomass yield, and nucleic acids content of the cells, the tetraploid srb1 homozygous hybrid is indistinguishable from an industrial strain of S. cerevisiae. However, it is characterized by a higher protein content. Unlikely any other laboratory or industrial strains, the original mutant and these hybrids possess an ability for lysis upon suspension in hypotonic solutions. The dependence of the percentge of lysed cells on the growth phase and concentration of osmotic stabilizer in the medium has been investigated. The quantity of proteins in the soluble fractions obtained after lysis of these strains by osmotic shock has been determined. These hybrids can be considered as a potential industrial source of potentials for nutritional purposes.

Description: Increasing mortality in intravenous (IV) drug users not reported to surveillance as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has occurred in New York City coincident with the AIDS epidemic. From 1981 to 1986, narcotics-related deaths increased on average 32% per year from 492 in 1981 to 1996 in 1986. This increase included deaths from AIDS increasing from 0 to 905 and deaths from other causes, many of which were infectious diseases, increasing from 492 to 1091. Investigations of these deaths suggest a causal association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. These deaths may represent a spectrum of HIV-related disease that has not been identified through AIDS surveillance and has resulted in a large underestimation of the impact of AIDS on IV drug users and blacks and Hispanics.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Stoneburner, R L -- Des Jarlais, D C -- Benezra, D -- Gorelkin, L -- Sotheran, J L -- Friedman, S R -- Schultz, S -- Marmor, M -- Mildvan, D -- Maslansky, R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1988 Nov 11;242(4880):916-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉AIDS Research Unit, New York City Department of Health, NY 10013.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3187532" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: In 1979, a mass poisoning occurred in Taiwan from cooking oil contaminated by thermally degraded polychlorinated biphenyls. Because these chemicals persist in human tissue, children born to female patients after the outbreak were exposed in utero. In 1985, 117 children born to affected women and 108 unexposed controls were examined and evaluated. The exposed children were shorter and lighter than controls; they had abnormalities of gingiva, skin, nails, teeth, and lungs more frequently than did controls. The exposed children showed delay of developmental milestones, deficits on formal developmental testing, and abnormalities on behavioral assessment. These findings are most consistent with a generalized disorder of ectodermal tissue. This syndrome is one of very few documented to result from transplacental exposure to pollutant chemicals.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Rogan, W J -- Gladen, B C -- Hung, K L -- Koong, S L -- Shih, L Y -- Taylor, J S -- Wu, Y C -- Yang, D -- Ragan, N B -- Hsu, C C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1988 Jul 15;241(4863):334-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3133768" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Voyager 2 observations made in the outer heliosphere near 25 AU and within 2 deg of the heliographic equatorial plane show periodic variations in the meridional (North/South) flow velocities that are much more prominent than the East/West variations. An autocorrelation analysis shows that the flow variation has a period of about 25.5 days in the latter half of 1986, in approximate agreement with the solar rotation period. The results suggest that increased pressure in interaction regions remains the best candidate for the driver of the nonradial flows.

Description: The paper presents echelle spectra recorded at the D lines of Na I for three stars projected on the high-latitude molecular cloud MBM 16 at l = 172 deg, b = -38 deg. The A stars HD 21142 at about 95 pc and HD 21134 at about 240 pc show strong D-line absorption at the same velocities as the CO emission observed at these positions. The distance to MBM 16 therefore is in the range of 60 to 95 pc. MBM 16 is only 11 deg away from MBM 12, previously placed by the same method at distance of about 65 pc. Consideration is given to the relationship between clouds 12 and 16 and the local hot low-density interstellar gas.

Notes: The process by which spermatid cytoplasmic volume is reduced and cytoplasm eliminated during spermiogenesis was investigated in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana. At early phases of spermiogenesis, newly formed, rounded spermatids were found within spermatocysts. As acrosomal development, nuclear elongation, and chromatin condensation occurred, spermatid nuclei became eccentric within the cell. A cytoplasmic lobe formed from the caudal spermatid head and flagellum and extended toward the seminiferous tubule lumen. The cytoplasmic lobe underwent progressive condensation whereby most of its cytoplasm became extremely electron dense and contrasted sharply with numerous electron-translucent vesicles contained therein. At the completion of spermiogenesis, many spermatids with their highly condensed cytoplasm still attached were released from their Sertoli cell into the lumen of the seminiferous tubule. There was no evidence of the phagocytosis of residual bodies by Sertoli cells. Because spermatozoa are normally retained in the testis in winter and are not released until the following breeding season, sperm were induced to traverse the duct system with a single injection of hCG. Some spermatids remained attached to their cytoplasm during the sojourn through the testicular and kidney ducts; however, by the time the sperm reached the Wolffian duct, separation had occurred. The discarded cytoplasmic lobe (residual body) appeared to be degraded within the epithelium of the Wolffian duct. It was determined that the volume of the spermatid was reduced by 87% during spermiogenesis through a nuclear volume decrease of 76% and cytoplasmic volume decrease of 95.3%.

Notes: The weighted intrinsic viscosities of polysaccharide mixtures in dilute aqueous solutions have been studied. The purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate that average intrinsic viscosities would scale with the weight fraction of the individual components for polysaccharide mixtures in 0.5N NaOH(aq). The polysaccharides examined in this study were composed of polymers differing in their molecular weights, degree of branching, and bond linkages. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment was observed for the three different mixed polymer systems examined. This observation validates certain aspects of proposed theoretical treatments which employ this fundamental assumption and allows for further advances in experimental analytical developments of water-soluble polymer systems.

Notes: Light scattering studies on dispersions formed by phase separation of a polymer-solvent-non-solvent mixture show that the dispersions comprise charged droplets of the polymer-rich phase. The charge number is not large, and data on the electrophoretic-scattering and the dynamic scattering in the absence of an external electric field are both consistent with distribution of charge among the droplets. Data on the dependence of the static scattering on concentration and scattering angle show that the droplets are also disperse in radius. The data are discussed in terms of an interaction potential among the charged droplets relating the electrostatic interactions to the charge number and radius of the droplets, and the ionic strength of the solvent.
