Notes: Reductive Arylation of Vinyl Trifluromethanesulfonates by Friedel-Crafts ReactionThe reaction of vinyl triflates 1 with benzene and toluene in the presence of aluminium trichloride gives alkyl-, alkenyl-, and 1,1-diarylalkanes 5, 6, 3, 9 depending on the structure of the substrate used. A mechanism for the reductive arylation is proposed.

Notes: Considering the lack of explanations for absorption and resorption currents in polymers, we propose to reformulate the latest and most comprehensive model based on surface ohmic conduction. This model, carried out by numerical simulation, contained oversimplifications. We also analyze the diffusion of carriers from the electrode edge. Finally, and in view of the negative results obtained by both models, we propose a new model based on a mechanism of drift diffusion which allows us to explain the characteristics of absorption and resorption currents in polymers. The simulation carried out for the three models is very precise and employs the integral equation method.

Notes: The low-temperature plasma anodization of cosputtered Ta silicide has been studied. The anodization parameters, oxide growth rate, electric field, and faradic efficiency showed a strong dependence on the silicide formation (with or without annealing). Rutherford backscattering techniques were employed to characterize the oxide films and it was found that the plasma oxides grown on as-deposited silicide are of uniform composition in the oxide bulk, but the near-surface region shows a slight Si oxide enrichment, and, thus, a Ta oxide depletion. On the contrary, for annealed (950 °C) silicides, when the hexagonal Si-enriched TaSi2 phase is formed, a high-surface enrichment in Ta oxide is observed in the plasma grown oxides. The insulating properties of the oxide films as determined by capacitance, electrical conductivity, and dielectric strength measurements also depend on the silicide formation, and these properties were correlated to the cation depth distributions in the oxide mixtures. A spectacular difference in the dielectric constant has been found between oxide formed on an as-deposited layer (∼12) and on an annealed one (∼6). This is a consequence of continuous (although nonconstant) cation's mixture in the first case and layered structure in the second.

Notes: Conditions for efficiency improvement and optimization in indium-tin-oxide/p-indium-selenide solar cells are discussed in this paper. This aim is achieved by using low-resistivity p-indium-selenide and by incorporating a back-surface-field contact. This contact is insured by a p-indium selenide/gold barrier whose rectifying behavior is explained through the complex impurity structure of p-indium-selenide. Electrical and photovoltaic properties of the cells are also reported. The efficiency parameters under AM1 simulated conditions have been improved up to 32 mA/cm2 for the short-circuit current density, 0.58 V for the open-circuit voltage, and 0.63 for the filling factor. As a result, solar efficiencies larger than 10% in annealed cells and 8% in unannealed ones have been attained. The limitations of these devices are discussed by investigating the dependence of electrical and efficiency parameters in function of photon flux and temperature.

Notes: Long-range spin ordering has been studied in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet α-FeC2O4⋅2D2O by neutron diffraction on a powdered sample above and below TN=11.7 K. Data at 14 K show essentially the room-temperature chemical structure. The space group is C2/c, Z=4, and unit cell dimensions are a=11.700 A(ring), b=5.568 A(ring), and c=9.847 A(ring) with β=128.05°. Magnetic peaks appear at TN and data at 10.5 K show doubling of the unit cell along the b direction, the chain axis. The ordered structure belongs to the magnetic space group P2b2/n with spins parallel to the b axis. Cancellation of certain interchain interactions gives the structure a pronounced two-dimensional character. At T2=9.5 K a discontinuous transition to a second magnetic phase occurs with additional doubling of the unit cell in the a direction. Below T2 the symmetry of the magnetic structure is reduced to triclinic, P2s1¯ with the spins deviating slightly from the b axis.

Notes: A detailed description is provided of a triple quadrupole (QQQ) tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) which is kinetically well behaved and can be configured to use either a molecular beam target (type A) or collision chamber (type B) configuration. Its unique capabilities are being used to explore design criteria essential for (i) absolute cross-section measurements, and for (ii) the development of standardized operating conditions for generic, instrument-independent spectral databases for collisionally activated dissociation (CAD).

Notes: A technique is described for making four-probe electrical conductivity measurements on bulk samples in a diamond anvil cell. The technique has been successfully applied up to 48 GPa and at temperatures below 4.2 K to measure the superconducting transition temperatures (Tc, of Pb, GaP, and Si. A method for analyzing the resistance versus temperature curve in the vicinity of the superconducting transition is also described. This method is applied to determine the pressure dependence of Tc in Si in the region where Tc varies rapidly with pressure.

Notes: Orthobaric densities of a square well fluid are obtained by means of a molecular dynamics simulation. Hard wall boundary conditions in one direction and periodic boundary conditions in the other two, added to a mean density close to the critical have two effects: a fast spinodal decomposition that condenses a slab of liquid at the center of the box plus a better sampling of the whole orthobaric curve. Results for the liquid densities compare well with previously obtained data while vapor densities are more sensitive to capillary effects. These finite size effects are analyzed within a lattice gas model, especially those produced by changes in box size and mean density. The method is well suited to predict orthobaric and miscibility curves for binary mixtures once the orthobaric curves of each molecular species have been properly adjusted to experiment.
