    Description: This paper presents a representative example of an enhancement in energetic ion flux associated with the International Sun-Earth Explorer 3 (ISEE 3) spacecraft's encounter with a traveling compression region (TCR). Data from the energetic particle anisotropy spectrometer (EPAS) instrument on ISEE 3 are studied, along with magnetic field data from the vector helium magnetometer. It is concluded that the ion enhancements seen are spatial in nature, thus supporting the idea that TCRs are the lobe signatures of plasmoids moving along the magnetotail, away from earth.

    Description: Communications Link Expert Assistance Resource (CLEAR) is a real time, fault diagnosis expert system for the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) Mission Operations Room (MOR). The CLEAR expert system is an operational prototype which assists the MOR operator/analyst by isolating and diagnosing faults in the spacecraft communication link with the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) during periods of realtime data acquisition. The mission domain, user requirements, hardware configuration, expert system concept, tool selection, development approach, and system design were discussed. Development approach and system implementation are emphasized. Also discussed are system architecture, tool selection, operation, and future plans.

    Description: A study of the interface problems between the Space Station Structure (vibrations) and the Payload Pointing Control System was undertaken. A major goal of the study was to identify any bounding factors that might limit the achievement of required pointing accuracies. A major result is that the space station will have a disturbance-rich environment and the background levels will be large enough to impact the pointing of some of the payloads. The need for an interface vibration specification between the structure and the payloads was identified.

    Description: The morphology of lava flows is often taken as an indicator of the broad chemical composition of the lava, especially when interpreting extraterrestrial volcanoes using spacecraft images. The historical lavas of the active volcano Mount Etna in Sicily provide an excellent opportunity to examine the controls on flow field morphology. In this study only flow produced by flank eruptions after the middle of the 18th century are examined. The final form of a flow-field may be more indicative of the internal plumbing of the volcano, which may control such factors as the effusion, rate, duration of eruption, volume of available magma, rate of de-gassing, and lava rheology. Different flow morphologies on Etna appear to be a good indicator of differing conditions within the volcanic pile. Thus the spatial distribution of different flow types on an extraterrestrial volcano may provide useful information about the plumbing conditions of that volcano, rather than necessarily providing information on the composition of materials erupted.

    Description: Resupply scheduling for the Space Station presents some formidable logistics problems. One of the most basic problems is assigning supplies to a series of shuttle resupply missions. A prototype logistics expert system which constructs resupply schedules was developed. This prototype is able to reconstruct feasible resupply plans. In addition, analysts can use the system to evaluate the impact of adding, deleting or modifying launches, cargo space, experiments, etc.

    Description: The changes in stability and control characteristics encountered by a thrust reversing aircraft during its final approach, landing, and ground roll are described. These changes include a strong pitch-up accompanied by the loss of horizontal tail and aileron control effectiveness. The magnitude of reverser induced changes in ground effect are much larger than corresponding changes in free air. Some unexpected unsteady motions exhibited in wind tunnel by an aircraft model with reversers operating in ground proximity are also described. The cause of this oscillatory behavior was determined to be an unsteady interaction between the wall jets formed by impingement of reverser jets on the ground and the on-coming free stream. Time histories of rolling moments measured by the wind tunnel balance or support system were removed and frequencies were scaled by Strouhal number to full scale. Corrected time series were used to simulate the motion of a fighter aircraft with thrust reversers in ground effect. The simulation predicted large roll angles and nose down attitude at touchdown. Some phenomena of jet attachment to solid surfaces are discussed and areas for future research are recommended.

    Description: In order that magnetic flux be confined within the solar interior for times comparable to the solar cycle period it has been suggested that the bulk of the solar toroidal field is stored in the convectively stable overshoot region situated beneath the convection zone proper. Such a magnetic field, though, is still buoyant and is therefore subject to Rayleigh-Taylor type instabilities. The model problem of an isolated region of magnetic field embedded in a convectively stable atmosphere is considered. The fully nonlinear evolution of the two dimensional interchange of modes is studied, thereby shedding some light on one of the processes responsible for the escape of flux from the solar interior.

    Description: Channeled-substrate-planar laser diodes from various wafers were observed to develop a node or dark spot in their near-field patterns after failure during lifetesting. 'Node' devices from each wafer were angle-lapped and stained in an attempt to uncover a physical mechanism for this common failure symptom. Optical microscopic examination of the beveled cross sections revealed that an intrusion, in the form of a spike at the tip of the zinc diffusion front, had penetrated into the active layer of these diodes. The node observed in the near-field pattern appears to be in a position correspondig to the location of the spike in the active region. In addition, cathodoluminescence measurements on other 'node' diodes revealed a dark line region approximately 2-micron-wide running parallel to and in the middle of the 5-micron contact stripe. It is believed that this dark line region is representative of an area of nonradiative recombination which occurs in the portion of the active layer containing the intrusion.

    Description: The hypothesis that the IMF penetrates plasmoids causing them to be three- rather than two-dimensional is tested by comparing observations of By within plasmoids and related tail structures to upstream IMF By data. The magnetic topologies that result from the mergings of closed plasma sheet flux tubes and open tail lobe flux tubes at a near-earth neutral line, and merging near the tail flanks are described and studied. The particle signals and isotropic electron distributions are examined. It is observed that the IMF By penetrates plasmoids and that their structure is three-dimensional. In the three-dimensional model of plasmoids the reconnected plasma sheet field lines form a magnetic flux-ropelike structure. The three-dimensional model is utilized to analyze stagnant, slowly moving and earthward moving structures.
