Notes: Summary Casein and lactose concentrations in milks of various species vary by at least 1–2 orders of magnitude, yet no single species secretes both components at either the high or the low end of the ranges. This pattern of variation could result from evolutionary adaptations in a single secretory mechanism.

Notes: Abstract Simultaneous measurements of the mean streamwise and radial velocities and the associated Reynolds stresses were made in an air-solid two-phase flow in a square sectioned (10×10 cm) 90° vertical to horizontal bend using laser Doppler velocimetry. The gas phase measurements were performed in the absence of solid particles. The radius ratio of the bend was 1.76. The results are presented for two different Reynolds numbers, 2.2×105 and 3.47×105, corresponding to mass ratios of 1.5×10−4 and 9.5×10−5, respectively. Glass spheres 50 and 100 μm in diameter were employed to represent the solid phase. The measurements of the gas and solid phase were performed separately. The streamwise velocity profiles for the gas and the solids crossed over near the outer wall with the solids having the higher speed near the wall. The solid velocity profiles were quite flat. Higher negative slip velocities are observed for the 100 μm particles than those for the 50 gm particles. At angular displacement θ=0°, the radial velocity is directed towards the inner wall for both the 50 and 100 μm particles. At θ=30° and 45°, particle wall collisions cause a clear change in the radial velocity of the solids in the region close to the outer wall. The 100 μm particle trajectories are very close to being straight lines. Most of the particle wall collisions occur between the θ=30° and 60° stations. The level of turbulence of the solids was higher than that of the air.

Notes: Summary The population of Thomson's gazelles in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania has declined by almost two thirds over a 13 year period. In the early 1970s, numbers stood at 0.66 million animals but had decreased to less than 0.25 million animals in 1985 as estimated by 5 different censuses using two different counting techniques. Predation, interspecific competition and disease are all factors that could have contributed to this decline, and at least one of these factors, predation, could now prevent the Thomson's gazelle population from increasing.

Notes: Summary We report here the development of an endogenous gene transfer system for the industrially-important Deuteromycete Penicillium chrysogenum, utilising a recombinant plasmid designated pPC-31 to complement a tryptophan — auxotrophic strain. Transformation frequencies in the order of 300–1800 transformants per μg DNA have been obtained, and Southern hybridisation analysis has demonstrated that in the majority of cases, integration is mediated by homologous recombination between pPC-31 and the host genome at the site of the resident mutant allele.

Notes: Summary An intravenous infusion regimen for flecainide was studied in 12 patients. Therapeutic drug levels were rapidly established and maintained throughout the 48-h infusion period. Two patients were withdrawn because of possible drug related problems, but in general the regimen seemed both effective and well tolerated.

Notes: Abstract The proteins of Hordeum chilense grain were resolved into 25 major components by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Their solubilities in aqueous alcohol solutions were determined to distinguish prolamin storage proteins from metabolic and structural proteins. The prolamins were divided into two groups, based on the presence or absence of intermolecular disulfide bonds determined by gel-filtration chromatography. Using an incomplete set of Chinese Spring wheat-H. chilense disomic addition lines, the structural genes of 21 of the 26 most dominant seed proteins were assigned to chromosomes. The great majority of the prolamin genes, including those coding for a high molecular weight (HMW) prolamin subunit, was present on chromosome 1Hch. However, a small number of prolamin genes also occurred on chromosomes 5Hch and 7Hch. A minor protein, probably belonging to the nonstorage group of proteins, is coded by genes on 5Hch. Various ditelosomic addition lines and ditelosomic and disomic substitution lines for chromosome 7Hch were also analyzed by electrophoresis. This technique revealed that the genes for three major prolamins occur on the β arm of chromosome 7Hch and that a gene for a minor protein, also thought to be a prolamin, occurs on the α arm. These results are discussed in relation to the evolution of prolamin genes in the Triticeae.

Notes: Abstract Observations from research ships which took part in the Indo-Soviet Monsoon Experiment of 1977 (MONSOON 77) and the International Monsoon Experiments (MONEX 79) over the central Arabian Sea and the north central Bay of Bengal were analyzed to study the mean wind and temperature structure of the monsoon boundary layer during active and break conditions. Mean profiles of wind speed and direction along with virtual potential temperature obtained by averaging data from several research ships during 1977 and 1979 indicate that onset conditions were associated with substantial increases in wind speed over the Arabian Sea and a shift to strong southwest flow. Monsoon onset was also characterized by near-neutral to slightly unstable temperature profiles in the lowest kilometer. Break conditions in 1977 in which the monsoon trough moved northward and substantial (5 mb) pressure rises were noted over the Arabian Sea show wind speeds typically decreasing from approximately 18 m s−1 during active conditions to roughly 8 m s −1. Temperature profiles during break conditions are similar to those observed in pre-monsoon conditions in that the boundary layer is observed to be generally much more stable up to 900 mb. Above 900 mb, profiles of virtual potential temperature show little variation. Analysis of latent and sensible heat fluxes during June 1977 calculated by the bulk aerodynamic method indicates values of latent heat flux during active conditions to be roughly two to three times larger than those during break conditions. Sensible heat flux shows an increase from approximately 20 to 80 W m −1 during the onset of the monsoon. Surface fluxes of water vapor indicate the importance of water vapor transport over the ship observation region in the central Arabian Sea during active conditions. Onset of the monsoon over the Arabian Sea is accompanied by an increase in the surface moisture flux by a factor of about two. Time histories of precipitable water show decreases of approximately 15% from active to break periods.

Notes: Abstract Soft, noisy silicon avalanche photodiodes were studied using the SEM electron beam induced current technique and transmission electron microscopy. They were found to contain varying concentrations of (i) diffusion-induced misfit dislocations, (ii) precipitates and (iii) cusps (lines of shallower penetration) in ragged p-n+ junctions due to dislocation-retarded diffusion. The noise was of classical microplasma form but the sites of this breakdown did not correlate with the precipitates as in most previous cases, but occurred at favoured points along the cusps in the p-n+ junction. Low and intermediate densities of misfit dislocations were found to produce microplasmas with lower breakdown voltages than very high densities. The shallowest misfit dislocations produced the greatest diffusion retardation, suggesting that removal of atoms from the diffusing flux by segregation to the dislocation is the mechanism responsible.[/p]

Notes: Abstract The formation of nickel aluminidms by the thermal explosion mode of gasless combustion synthesis was investigated for Ni-Al powders ranging in composition from 5 to 3O at% Al. Compound formation was found to take place sequentially starting with the most aluminium-rich and ending with AlNi3 as the predominant compound in the product. Compounds formed through both solid- and liquid-sate reactions, with the relative contribution of each depending on the rate of heating of the powders to the reaction temperature. The effect of the particle size of nickel on these reactions vvasalso investigated for powders with average diameters from 14 to 58μm.
