    Notes: Abstract The problem of estimating the residual usable energy of a lead-acid cell has been intensified by the introduction of fully sealed units. These rely on the recombination of gaseous oxygen produced during overcharge at the positive electrode with the active material at the negative electrode. This introduction has removed the possibility of electrolyte density measurements, third electrode measurements and restricted residual capacity assessments to the two cell terminals. A method for this process is described using a parameter based on a characteristic frequency. The parameter is also a useful measure of cell ageing.

    Notes: Abstract The toxicity and possible accumulation of ruthenium nitrosyl complexes by marine bacteria and test organisms have been studied, A range of these complexes show no toxic effects towardsEscherichia coli K12 at concentrations of mM and below. Yeasts are more sensitive, showing effects on growth at 10 ΜM. The ruthenium nitrosyl complexes tested are unable to permeate the cytoplasmic membrane ofE. coli. This may account for their lack of toxicity. However, these compounds did not have significant inhibitory effects on Mg2+-ATPase activity in cell-extracts, I50 values lying in the range 2 to 125 Μmol(mg protein)−1. Marine bacteria are capable of taking up ruthenium complexes from simulated effluent, but this cannot be demonstrated in the presence of sediment which competes effectively for binding of complexes. There is minimal likelihood of concentration of ruthenium compounds from effluents by marine bacteria.

    Notes: Abstract Field assessments of impacted streams require a control or at least an unbiased estimate of attainable conditions. Control sites, such as upstream/downstream or wilderness sites, have proven inadequate for assessing attainable ecological conditions where the control streams differ naturally from the impacted streams to a considerable degree or where different disturbances exist than those being studied. Relatively undisturbed reference sites with watersheds in areas having the same land-surface form, soil, potential natural vegetation, and land use as are predominant in large, relatively homogeneous regions are suggested as alternative control sites. These areas are considered typical of the region and therefore the sites also are considered typical of the region because their watersheds exhibit all the terrestrial variables that make that region a region. The logical basis for developing regional reference sites lies in the ability to group watersheds and common stream types into regions by integrating available maps of terrestrial variables that influence streams. Relatively undisturbed reference sites can be selected from typical areas of the regions and from transition zones where one or two of the terrestrial variables are not the predominant one(s) of the region. These reference sites are useful for estimating attainable conditions, for evaluating temporal and spatial changes in ecological integrity, for classifying attainable uses of streams, and for setting biological and environmental criteria.

    Notes: Abstract Land classification systems can be useful for assessing aquatic ecosystems if relationships among them exist. Because the character of an aquatic ecosystem depends to a large extent upon the character of the landscape it drains, spatial patterns in aquatic ecosystems should correspond to patterns in the landscape. To test this hypothesis, the US state of Ohio was divided into four aquatic ecoregions based on an analysis of spatial patterns in the combination of land-surface form, land use, potential natural vegetation, and soil parent material. During the period July–October 1983, fish assemblages were sampled in 46 streams that were representative of the ecoregions, and that had watersheds relatively undisturbed by human activities. Spatial patterns of the fish assemblages were examined relative to the ecoregions; distinct regional differences were identified. The assemblages differed most between the Huron/Erie Lake Plain region and the Western Allegheny Plateau region; assemblages in the Eastern Corn Belt Plains and the Erie/Ontario Lake Plain-Interior Plateau regions were intermediate. This pattern also reflects the gradient in landscape character as one moves from the northwest to the southeast of Ohio.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of iron limitation on growth, the composition and function of the respiratory chains, and gallium uptake inEscherichia coli have been studied. Decreasing the iron concentration in a defined medium using Chelex resin gave lower growth yields in both continuous culture and prolonged batch culture. In the former, ironlimited (entering [Fe]≤2.0 μM) cells exhibited diminished respiration rates, respiration-driven proton translocation quotients, and levels of non-haem iron and cytochromes. The cellular concentration of haemoproteinb-590 (a cytochromea 1-like hydroperoxidase) decreased 20-fold on iron limitation, whilst a CO-binding pigment with an absorption maximum in the dithionite-treated form near 500 nm appeared. Gallium(III) (9 μM) added to iron-limited, but not iron-sufficient, cultures diminished growth yields further; cells grown with low entering concentrations of iron took up less gallium than iron-sufficient cells. These results are attributed to the interference by gallium(III) with siderophore-mediated metal uptake. Gallium also stimulated iron uptake and was itself accumulated by iron-sufficient cells, suggesting that gallium(III) also affects the iron transport system(s) of low affinity.

    Notes: Abstract Adult male mice from the substrains DBA/2JNmg and DBA/2J were individually placed into a novel environment and compared for nine behavioral components. The substrains differed in three vertically oriented exploratory acts, the latter showing the highest rates. On the basis of the breeding history of strain DBA/2, it is concluded that over the past years one or more mutations with an effect on behavior have occurred in at least these sublines of an old and widely used inbred mouse strain.

    Notes: Abstract P-hydroquinone (H2Q) has been gamma-irradiated in the presence of O2 and different alcohols in acidic solutions. In the presence of tert-BuOH, the oxidation products were quinone(q), 2-hydroxybenzoquinone (2-Q-OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). In case of propan-2-ol, ethanol and methanol, the oxidation products were as above in addition to a carbonyl compound. A chain reaction was observed in case of propan-2-ol and this was inhibited by H2Q. The dependence of G(Q) and G(H2O2) on pH is a titration-type curve and the species responsible for this curve is assumed to be the protonated and unprotonated alcohol peroxy radicals.

    Notes: Abstract The γ-radiolysis of p-benzoquinone (Q) at different concentrations of H2SO4, Q, O2 and Cl− are p-hydroquinone (H2 Q), 2-hydroxy-p-benzoquinone (2-Q-OH) and H2O2. The effect of Cl− on yields is similar to its effect in deaerated solutions. The yields of H2Q and 2-Q-Oh are lower than in deaerated solutions. In the presence of simple aliphatic alcohols, a carbonyl compound is also measured in addition to those mentioned above. This system is found to be more complex than in deaerated solutions. Q and O2 were found to compete for the radical R1 R2 COH and good agreement was obtained between observed and reported rate coefficients of the reactions involved. There is some evidence that at lower pH, alcohol peroxy radicals are also able to undergo electron transfer with quinone.

    Notes: Summary The first isolation of EF-Tu mutations in Salmonella typhimurium is reported. The mutations were isolated by selecting for resistance to the antibiotic mocimycin (= kirromycin). The mocimycin resistant phenotype is the result of mutations in each of two genes, tufA and tufB. Strains mutant in only one of the two tuf genes are sensitive to mocimycin. The spontaneous mutation rate of each of the two tuf genes to a mocimycin resistant phenotype differs by an order of magnitude. tufA maps at minute 71–72, closely linked to rpsL. tufB maps at minute 88–89, closely linked to rpoB. These map positions correspond to the locations of tufA and tufB in E. coli.

    Notes: Summary A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the effects of interplot competition on grain yield among hexaploid triticale cultivars of widely differing heights grown in 1.5 m wide plots. Three experiments in 1982 tested four triticale cultivars, ranging in final height from 63 to 104 cm, with four wheat standards, 62 to 82 cm in height, using a design balanced for nearest neighbours. Two further experiments in 1983 with the same design included eight triticale cultivars ranging in final height from 92 to 183 cm. In four of the five experiments, plot yields of both wheat and triticale were decreased by between one and two grammes per square metre for every centimetre by which the plot was exceeded by the mean height of its two neighbours. Plots which were taller than their neighbours showed a similar increase in yield. Such systematic biases in cultivar means are not reduced by randomisation and increased replication. Hence, in breeding trials, every effort should be made to group genotypes according to their final height so that competition effects between plots are reduced. For the final evaluation of varieties differing widely in height, where an estimate of error is required for variety comparisons and varietal differences are likely to be small, guard plots should be grown on either side of each experimental plot or harvesting should be restricted to the centre of larger plots.
