    Notes: Abstract Dispersion effects in bacteriorhodopsin both in suspension and incorporated into liposomes have been studied by measuring the changes in the dielectric properties induced by electric and magnetic fields at low and medium frequencies. The samples exhibit very high values of relative permittivity and dielectric loss. Dispersions have been measured up to 200 kHz and are believed to be due to the reorientation of the bacteriorhodopsin chromophore within the membrane fragments. A study of relaxation times vs temperature shows a transition at 28°C, the same temperature as found using other techniques.

    Notes: Abstract Existing algorithms and a new algorithm called ‘quadratic’, for extracting stress-intensity factors (SIF) from frozen-stress photoelastic data are evaluated for application to near-tip data in three-dimensional problems. It is shown that for this class of problems, modifications to some of the existing algorithms may be necessary, in some cases, in order to ensure reliable SIF values. But that for all the algorithms, the two-parameter form of the governing equations of linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is sufficient for use with near-tip data, even for complex three-dimensional geometries.

    Description: The present conference gives attention to topics in the application of fracture mechanics, subcritical crack growth phenomena, fracture testing methods, ductile fracture behavior, and fracture mechanisms and their analysis. Specific papers treat the resistance curve approach to composite materials characterization, fracture toughness in ductile iron and cast steel, hold-time effects in elevated temperature fatigue crack propagation, creep crack growth under nonsteady conditions, viscoplastic fatigue in a superalloy at elevated temperatures, fracture testing with arc bend specimens, one-point bend impact test application, and a compact mode II fracture specimen. Also discussed are the computation of stable crack growth using the J-integral, the use of plastic energy dissipation to characterize crack growth, the extension of surface cracks under cyclic loading, the minimum time criterion for crack instability in structural materials, dynamic crack propagation and branching under biaxial loading, and boundary layer effects in cracked bodies.

    Description: This paper uses the Newman-Raju model, the Paris crack growth rate law, and a fixed R ratio to demonstrate the analytical considerations associated with predicting stress intensity distributions and fatigue crack growth of surface flaws under conditions of small-scale yielding. Problems which lie outside the realm of the model used in the analytical description are presented. It is concluded that, while the model employed provides remarkable predictive capability in a variety of surface flaw problems, many exceptional cases remain to be modeled.

    Description: We extend the Lee (1982) self-consistent theory of upstream wave excitation and particle energization to address observations by Voyager 2 of sunward propagating MHD waves and diffuse suprathermal particle populations upstream of the Jovian bow shock. Two new ideas are incorporated into the theory. First, the interplanetary seed wave population is taken to be an equal admixture of waves propagating both toward and away from the shock parallel to the interplanetary magnetic field. Second, finite connection times are incorporated approximately into the theory in an effort to understand whether the particle spectra at high energy are limited by particle escape or finite connection time. It is found that finite connection times dominate the particle distribution at energies above 40 keV. In this manner the suprathermal proton distributions can be accounted for by a multiple reflection, shock acceleration theory. We find that the theory can also account for the low-frequency waves observed upstream of the shock in conjunction with the suprathermal ions.
