Notizen: Abstract The temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the remanent magnetization have been determined from far-field measurements for thallium ceramic samples. The current flow that gives rise to the observed magnetization is intragranular. The results are consistent with flux-creep-controlled transport with a distance between pinning centers of ∼- 1/2/μm. Using near-field measurements, the superconducting properties are found to be heterogeneous on a scale of ≫ 1 mm. Magnetic domains have been induced by pplying spatial variation in the applied field.

Notizen: Summary The low molecular weight heat shock protein (HSP) profiles of the hexaploid wheat cultivar “Chinese Spring” and its ditelosomic series were characterized by isoelectric focusing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of denatured in vivo radiolabeled proteins. Comparisons of the ditelosomics (DTs) to the euploid “Chinese Spring” enabled the assignment of genes controlling 9 of the 13 targeted HSPs to seven chromosome arms. There did not appear to be a genome-specific action in the regulation of expression of these HSPs. There did appear to be a higher frequency of controlling genes within homoeologous DT lines 3, 4 and 7. Significant variation in protein quantity was evident among the DT lines for some HSPs, while other HSPs were remarkably stable in their expression across all DTs examined. The results are useful in identifying specific DT lines for the investigation of HSP functions in hexaploid wheat.

Notizen: Summary The colloidal gold immunocytochemical technique was used to determine the ultrastructural features of the glandular cells in the pituitaries of male frogs, Rana pipiens, both in vivo and after superfusion in vitro. Specific reactions to antisera against bullfrog gonadotropins, human prolactin, and synthetic 1–39 corticotropin allowed identification of the 3 corresponding types of glandular cells. No immunoreaction was obtained with antisera against human or ovine-growth hormone, human β-thyrotropin hormone, and bovine S-100 protein. General morphological features of these immunocytochemically identified glandular cells were similar to those of equivalent cells previously described in other amphibian species. Non-glandular folliculo-stellate cells were distinctive. In freshly removed pituitaries, these folliculo-stellate cells contained lysosome-like structures, but did not show phagocytic vacuoles in the cytoplasm; they contained many mitochondria, and the Golgi complex and endoplasmic reticulum were relatively undeveloped. After 4 or 18 h of superfusion, some immunoreactive gonadotropic, prolactin, and corticotropic cells showed degeneration and destruction. In the same gland, folliculo-stellate cells retained a viable appearance, but showed phagocytic vacuoles containing secretory granule-like structures which were immunoreactive to gonadotropic, prolactin, and corticotropic antibodies. Some folliculo-stellate cells showed phagocytic vacuoles containing complete glandular cells. These results suggest that superfusion causes a destruction of some of the glandular cells, and that folliculo-stellate cells act as phagocytes when cellular debris or moribund cells are present in the intercellular space in the pituitary parenchyma.

Notizen: Summary A model has been developed of root growth in winter wheat based on cumulative thermal time with description of the extension and branching of individual age classes of seminal and crown root axes. The model requires, as input, the sowing date and average monthly mean air temperatures and gives, as output, the maximum depth of penetration of each age class of root and the root length density or root weight in any 10 cm layer of soil contributed by main axes, first-order and second-order laterals on any calendar date. The impact of soil temperature on root length density distributions with time was assessed by comparing a warm site (Perth, Australia) with a cool site (Rothamsted Experimental Station, England). Simulated values of root length density for plants with six leaves were consistently high when soil temperature was held constant at 10°C, but variable soil temperatures at each site resulted in rooting profiles characteristic for the two sites, although root length densities were larger than commonly observed at either location. The model simulates well described sequences of root production and permits calculation of maximal root development rates for unstressed plants growing in moist soil with no mechanical impedance to growth. It allows the co-development of root and shoot to be modelled and since it uses only about 5 K bytes of computer memory could be easily used for the assessment of management practices in the field.
