Description: Plane stagnation-point flow is modulated in the free stream so that the velocity components are proportional to K(H) + K cos omega t. Similarity solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are examined using high-frequency asymptotics for K and K(H) of unit order. Special attention is focused on the steady streaming generated in this flow with strongly non-parallel streamlines.

Description: The present determination of the hydrodynamic force resisting the relative motion of two unequal drops moving in Stokes flow conditions along their line of centers assumes that the drops are in near-contact, and possess sufficiently high interfacial tension to remain spherical. Depending on the ratio of drop viscosity to that of the continuous phase, as well as on the ratio of the distance between drops to their reduced radius, three possible flow situations arise: these correspond to nearly-rigid drops, drops with partially mobile interfaces, and drops with fully mobile interfaces.

Description: The present model for the sedimentation of colloidal systems includes a diffusion term in the governing equation which, in the regions above the sediment, acts as small perturbation to the Kynch (1952) theory. Within the sediment, diffusion is comparable to convection due to the the high solid volume fraction. An application of the method of matched asymptotic expansions to the conservation equation allows a complete description of the settling process to be formulated, with specific attention to volume-fraction evolution in the sediment.

Description: Solution of the parabolic Navier-Stokes (PNS) equations for supersonic flows is discussed, and compatibility of the PNS method with the triple-deck theory of Stewartson (1974) is demonstrated. Characteristic and stability analyses show that use of an appropriate filter on the pressure term in the x-momentum equation can suppress the departure solutions, giving the usual desired weak interaction solution. An Alternating Direction Explicit procedure, with minimal computer storage requirements compared to the full Navier-Stokes solvers, is proposed to calculate strongly interacting flows using a global iteration procedure for the PNS equations. The PNS equations are used to solve the hypersonic viscous interaction problem, and good agreement is found with experimental results.
