Description: Smell identification ability was measured in 1955 persons ranging in age from 5 to 99 years. On the average, women outperformed men at all ages, and nonsmokers outperformed smokers. Peak performance occurred in the third through fifth decades and declined markedly after the seventh. More than half of those 65 to 80 years old evidenced major olfactory impairment. After 80 years, more than three-quarters evidenced major impairment. Given these findings, it is not surprising that many elderly persons complain that food lacks flavor and that the elderly account for a disproportionate number of accidental gas poisoning cases each year.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Doty, R L -- Shaman, P -- Applebaum, S L -- Giberson, R -- Siksorski, L -- Rosenberg, L -- NS 16265/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Dec 21;226(4681):1441-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6505700" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The gene for the circumsporozoite (CS) protein of Plasmodium falciparum has been cloned and its nucleotide sequence determined. The gene encodes a protein of 412 amino acids as deduced from the nucleotide sequence. The protein contains 41 tandem repeats of a tetrapeptide, 37 of which are Asn-Ala-Asn-Pro and four of which are Asn-Val-Asp-Pro. Monoclonal antibodies against the CS protein of Plasmodium falciparum were inhibited from binding to the protein by synthetic peptides of the repeat sequence. The CS protein of Plasmodium falciparum and the CS protein of a simian malaria parasite, Plasmodium knowlesi, have two regions of homology, one of which is present on either side of the repeat. One region contains 12 of 13 identical amino acids. Within the nucleotide sequence of this region, 25 of 27 nucleotides are conserved. The conservation of these regions in parasites widely separated in evolution suggests that they may have a function such as binding to liver cells and may represent an invariant target for immunity.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Dame, J B -- Williams, J L -- McCutchan, T F -- Weber, J L -- Wirtz, R A -- Hockmeyer, W T -- Maloy, W L -- Haynes, J D -- Schneider, I -- Roberts, D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Aug 10;225(4662):593-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6204383" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Interferon-beta 1 (IFN-beta 1) complementary DNA was used as a hybridization probe to isolate human genomic DNA clones lambda B3 and lambda B4 from a human genomic DNA library. Blot-hybridization procedures and partial nucleotide sequencing revealed that lambda B3 is related to IFN-beta 1 (and more distantly to IFN-alpha 1). Analyses of DNA obtained from a panel of human-rodent somatic cell hybrids that were probed with DNA derived from lambda B3 showed that lambda B3 is on human chromosome 2. Similar experiments indicated that lambda B4 is not on human chromosomes 2, 5, or 9. The finding that DNA related to the IFN-beta 1 gene (and IFN-alpha 1 gene) is dispersed in the human genome raises new questions about the origins of the interferon genes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Sagar, A D -- Sehgal, P B -- May, L T -- Inouye, M -- Slate, D L -- Shulman, L -- Ruddle, F H -- AI-16262/AI/NIAID NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Mar 23;223(4642):1312-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6546621" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Observations at the 2.6 mm line of CO reveal the presence of a large number of molecular clouds at high galactic latitude. If the velocity dispersion of the clouds is a measure of their scale height, the mean distance of the ensemble detected is 100 pc. The clouds are unusual in that either they are not gravitationally bound or they are very deficient in CO relative to molecular hydrogen. These clouds represent a heretofore unrecognized component of the local interstellar medium. If they are pervasive in the Milky Way, they probably represent the small molecular cloud component of the interstellar medium.

Notes: The stereospecificity of benzyl derivatives of trivalent titanium (Rn TiX3-n, where X = Cl, I, n = 1-3) in butadiene polymerization was studied. It was found that dibenzyltitaniumiodide is an efficient catalyst of the 1,4-cis-polymerization of butadiene and that tribenzyltitanium forms 1,2-units. In both cases all the titanium-benzyl bonds participated in the initiation reaction and the active sites were polymeric analogues of crotyl derivatives of Ti(III); namely, bis-π-oligobutadienyltitaniumiodide and tris-π-oligobutadienyltitanium. These sites are stable at room temperature. The nature of the active sites in the polymerization of butadiene with Ziegler's 1,4-stereo-specific systems Til4 (or Til2Cl2) + AIR3 are described.

Notes: Efforts to prepare triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate by metathesis between commercially available “triphenylsulfonium chloride” and potassium hexafluorophosphate failed to yield the expected product but gave, instead, in approximately 50% yield, a crystalline substance with well-defined properties readily distinguishable from triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate. The unexpected substance is identified as bis-[4(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide-bis-hexafluorophosphate, for which no previous reference has been found in the literature. Its identification is based on elemental analysis, NMR, mass spectrometry, and infrared analysis. Bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide-bis-hexafluorophosphate was also prepared by the reaction of benzene with sulfur monochloride in the presence of aluminum chloride and chlorine, followed by addition of potassium hexafluorophosphate. The product is an effective photonitiator for the crosslinking of epoxide resins.

Notes: In contradiction to reports from this and other laboratories, this study reports that the integrated Mayo-Lewis equation, or Meyer-Lowery equation, adequately describes the high-conversion free radical copolymerization of styrene and methylmethacrylate. The copolymerization was monitored by following the changes in the feed composition using NMR, as well as determination of the resulting copolymer compositions by NMR and UV. “Error in all Variables” statistical techniques were used to produce estimates of the reactivity ratios. The reactivity ratios estimated were, from feed composition, NMR, r1 (styrene) = 0.472, r2 = 0.454, from copolymer composition, UV, r1 = 0.497, r2 = 0.464, and NMR, r1 = 0.432, r2 = 0.422.

Notes: The sorption and diffusion of toluene vapor at 30°C in polypropylene with draw ratios from 1 to 18 have been studied. Drawing leads to the transformation of the initially spherulitic material into the fibrous structure, with many taut tie molecules lying mainly on the outer boundary of the microfibrils. The free volume and hence the sorption sites are thereby reduced, and the microfibrils become less and permeable as the draw ratio increases. As a result, the equilibrium concentration and the zero-concentration diffusion coefficient drop by factors of 4 and 30, respectively. The diffusion coefficient increases exponentially with toluene concentration but the concentration dependence becomes weaker with increasing draw ratio, indicating that the severely constrained chain segments in the drawn samples have much less freedom to mix with penetrant molecules. Annealing relaxes the tie molecules and thus restores the sorption and diffusion properties to values corresponding to completely relaxed amorphous component, i.e., to values even higher than those of the undrawn but quenched material.

Notes: Two calculation methods for estimating reactivity ratios, one method based on the differential Alfrey-Mayo equation and one based on the integrated form of this model, are compared with respect to precision and bias. Both methods are characterized by the use of information about the monomer feed composition only and are assumed to be valid up to high conversion. As only monomer feed composition has to be analyzed, several sampling designs are feasible. Two extreme designs can be distinguished. One consists of repetitive sampling of the initial and final monomer feed mixture, whereas the other consists of sequential sampling during the course of the reaction. The influence of both designs of the calculated r-values is investigated by means of simulation. In the present paper the second calculation method, based on the integrated form, is solved by a nonlinear least squares method considering errors in both variables. This method required additional information about the errorstructure of the data. As this information is mostly of approximate nature, the influence of misspecification of this error structure on the calculated r-values is also examined.
