    Notes: A linear model for the solidification of a dilute binary alloy is presented. In this model the solidus and liquidus curves are linear. As a consequence internal energy depends linearly upon temperature and concentration. The formulation is a generalization of the well-known enthalpy method to treat a phase change problem involving coupled heat and mass transfer. Both analytic and numerical formulations are given. Results from the latter are presented and compared with an explicit solution of Rubinstein for a Stefan-like problem posed in a semi-infinite slab. Some remarks on the behaviour of the explicit solution are given.

    Notes: Saccharomyces cerevisiae transformed with a multicopy plasmid carrying the yeast structural gene HEM2, which codes for δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase, was enriched 20-fold in the enzyme. Beginning with cell-free extracts of transformed cells, the dehydratase was purified 193-fold to near-homogeneity. This represents a 3900-fold purification relative to the enzyme activity in normal, untransformed yeast cells. The specific activity of the purified enzyme was 16·2 μmol h-1 per mg protein at pH 9·4 and 37·5°C. In most respects the yeast enzyme resembles mammalian enzymes. It is a homo-octamer with an apparent Mr, of 275 000, as determined by centrifugation in glycerol density gradients, and under denaturing conditions behaved as a single subunit of Mr ≃ 37 000. The enzyme requires reduced thiol compounds to maintain full activity, and maximum activity was obtained in the presence of 1·0 mM-Zn2+. It is sensitive to inhibition by the heavy metal ions Pb2+ and Cu2+. The enzyme exhibits Michaelis-Menten kinetics and has an apparent Km of 0·359 mM. Like dehydratases from animal tissues, the yeast enzyme is rather thermostable. During the purification process an enhancement in total δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase activity suggested the possibility that removal of an inhibitor of the enzyme could be occurring.

    Notes: The goal of this research was to determine whether there is any interaction between the type of constitutive equation used and the degree of mesh refinement, as well as how the type of constitutive equation might affect the convergence and quality of the solution, for a planar 4:1 contraction in the finite eiement method. Five constitutive equations were used in this work: the Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT), Johnson-Segalman (JS), White-Metzner (WM), Leonov-like and upper convected Maxwell (UCM) models. A penalty Galerkin finite element technique was used to solve the system of non-linear differential equations. The constitutive equations were fitted to the steady shear viscosity and normal stress data for a polystyrene melt. In general it was found that the convergence limit based on the Deborah number De and the Weissenberg number We varied from model to model and from mesh to mesh. From a practical point of view it was observed that the wall shear stress in the downstream region should also be indicated at the point where convergence is lost, since this parameter reflects the throughput conditions. Because of the dependence of convergence on the combination of mesh size and constitutive equation, predictions of the computations were compared with birefringence data obtained for the same polystyrene melt flowing through a 4:1 planar contraction. Refinement in the mesh led to better agreement between the predictions using the PTT model and flow birefringence, but the oscillations became worse in the corner region as the mesh was further refined, eventually leading to the loss of convergence of the numerical algorithm. In comparing results using different models at the same wall shear stress conditions and on the same mesh, it was found that the PTT model gave less overshoot of the stresses at the re-entrant corner. Away from the corner there were very small differences between the quality of the solutions obtained using different models. All the models predicted solutions with oscillations. However, the values of the solutions oscillated around the experimental birefringence data, even when the numerical algorithm would not converge. Whereas the stresses are predicted to oscillate, the streamlines and velocity field remained smooth. Predictions for the existence of vortices as well as for the entrance pressure loss (ΔPent) varied from model to model. The UCM and WM models predicted negative values for ΔPent.

    Notes: An assumed stress hybrid curvilinear triangular finite element is described which is based upon the Kirchhoff theory of plate bending. The derivation extends the assumed stress hybrid technique to curvilinear boundaries where the twelve connectors are related to those of an equilibrium rectilinear element and to Semiloof. The solution process demands only first derivatives of the shape functions.The element is subjected to various patch tests for constant bending, e.g. where the central element is in close approximation to a circle. All tests are passed for stress couples and vertex displacements, but values of the remaining connectors do not resemble exact results. Patch tests for rigid-body movements are passed exactly in every respect.

    Notes: This note discusses the numerical solution of the kinematic wave equation under those conditions when the solution contains a discontinuous shock. A finite element solution is described in which shocks are represented by discrete nodal discontinuities. The implementation of the method follows conventional finite element practice over the shockless regions of the solution domain which are coupled by frontal constraints. The basis of the method and examples of its application to the solution of the kinematic wave equation in one and two dimensions are presented.

    Notes: The paper develops a new discrete transform pair which economizes on the number of samples of F(s) and f(t) compared with the standard pair. Whereas the standard pair used uniform sampling along the Bromwich contour, the new method allows a progressive increase in the sampling interval, thereby reducing the number of samples required to meet a specified bandwidth requirement. In the case of the computation of transient responses of physical systems, a reduction by a factor of 10 is not unrealistic. The new transform pair is based on the generalization of fundamental sampling principles. In particular, this leads to an integration contour different from the Bromwich contour.
