    Description: The high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) measures optical properties of atmospheric aerosols by interferometically separating the elastic aerosol backscatter from the Doppler broadened molecular contribution. Calibration and data analysis procedures developed for the HSRL are described. Data obtained during flight evaluation testing of the HSRL system are presented with estimates of uncertainties due to instrument calibration. HSRL measurements of the aerosol scattering cross section are compared with in situ integrating nephelometer measurements.

    Description: Evidence from the Vela satellites that very brief, approximately 0.1 s, gamma-ray bursts constitute a class distinct from the longer, highly structured bursts has been strengthened by the results of the Venera 11 and 12 KKONUS experiments. The Goodard ISEE-3 gamma-ray burst spectrometer, utilizing a trigger criterion which is more likely to be independent of duration than previous experiments, detected a sample of events which enhances this bimodal distribution. The ISEE-3 result is corroborated by an increase in the frequency of detection of short bursts in the KONUS 13/14 database over KONUS 11/12, an effect attributable to the use of a shorter trigger integration time in the later experiments. Considerations such as repeating bursters complicate a simple dichotomous classification of gamma-ray bursts.

    Description: Fifteen strong X-ray sources were observed by the X-ray polarimeters on board the OSO-8 satellite from 1975 to 1978. The final results of this search for X-ray polarization in cosmic sources are presented in the form of upper limits for the ten sources which are discussed elsewhere. These limits in all cases are consistent with a thermal origin for the X-ray emission.

    Description: The employment of area focal plane arrays (FPA) has made it possible to obtain second generation infrared imaging systems with high resolution and sensitivity. The Short Wavelength Infrared (SWIR) region (1-2.5 microns) is of importance for imaging objects at high temperature and under conditions of reflected sunlight. The present investigation is concerned with electrooptical characterization results for 32 x 32 SWIR detector arrays and FPAs which are suitable for use in a prototype imaging spectrometer. The employed detector material is Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te grown by liquid phase epitaxy on a CdTe transparent substrate. Attention is given to details of processing, the design of the detector array, the multiplexer, the fabrication of the hybrid FPA, and aspects of performance.

    Description: Laser holographic interferometry was used to study a two-dimensional NACA 0012 airfoil undergoing dynamic stall. The airfoil, fabricated from graphite fiber and epoxy, was tested at Mach numbers of 0.3 to 0.6, at Reynolds numbers of 500,000-2,000,000, at reduced frequencies of 0.015 to 0.15, and at mean angles of attack of 0-10 deg with amplitudes of 10 deg. Density and pressure fields were obtained from dual-plate interferograms. Double-pulse interferograms, which seemed to show the wake boundaries better, were also taken. Comparisons of pressures with orifice pressures were good for the attached flow cases. For the separated flow cases, which had a vortex enbedded in the flow, the comparisons were poor. Vortices, wake structures, and the dynamic stall process can be seen by holographic interferometry.

    Description: The gamma-ray bursts of April 19 and 21, 1980, and March 1, 1981, are characterized on the basis of observations obtained at 25-500 keV and time resolution 128 msec using the hard-X-ray-burst spectrometer of the SMM satellite. The data are presented graphically, and the parameters determined by fitting three theoretical models to the data for each phase (rising phase, decay phase, and valleys between pulses) are given in tables. Models used are thin thermal bremsstrahlung with or without absorption lines, thermal synchrotron with or without absorption lines, and power law with exponential cutoff.

    Description: The energy dependence of the short pathlengths in the cosmic ray pathlength distribution is investigated in a galactic propagation plus solar modulation calculation. In order to reproduce, simultaneously, the compiled B/C and sub-Fe/Fe measurements, an energy dependent deficiency of short pathlengths is required which is largest at low energies and becomes negligible above a few GeV/nucleon. Such behavior could imply a significant contribution from matter in the vicinity of the cosmic ray source or the acceleration site.
