Notes: Raman spectra of thallous carbonate have been studied to c. 52 kbar and mid-IR spectra to 36 kbar. Details of the assignment have also been established using single-crystal IR reflectance and Raman spectroscopy. Phase transitions were found near 13 and 38 kbar on the basis of the Raman evidence, thus supporting the earlier conclusions of Meisalo and Kalliomaki based on x-ray powder and optical results. Analysis of possible space group relations between phases III (ambient) and IV showed that IV must be orthorhombic and adopt one of the D2hn groups, where n = 17, 19, 21, 25 or 28. Structural relationships between the phases are discussed.

Description: NGC 7027 was observed with a multichannel grating spectrometer from 5.2 to 7.5 microns at a spectral resolving power of 120-200. Two new dust emission features are resolved at 5.62 and 6.95 microns, and for the first time the Ni II fine-structure line at 6.64 microns is detected. It is shown that a single molecular dust constituent might account for six of the nine observed dust features between 2 and 14 microns. The strength of the Ni II line indicates either that Ni is not depleted in the neutral gas, or that the line is formed at high density.

Description: Infrared spectrophotometry of the R-type carbon star HD 19557 is presented. Two unusual spectroscopic features are seen: a 3.1 micron band is lacking and a 2.8 micron band is present. Identifications are proposed for three previously unreported stellar absorption bands with electronic sequences of C2, CN, and C2H. The latter is proposed to be responsible for the 2.8 micron feature. The atmospheric structure of the star is studied with synthetic spectra, and an effective temperature between 2600 K and 3000 K is suggested. No SiC emission is seen at 11.3 microns, indicating that grain formation is not a viable process around the star. The lack of dust in R stars may suggest a salient difference between R and N types.

Description: The importance of coordinating different types of observations of a comet is illustrated in terms of spectral data on Comet Bowell. Photometric data in 1980 indicated that OH emissions were occurring when the comet was still more than 4 AU from the sun. Further measurements were arranged with the IUE satellite, the photoelectric scanner at Cerro Tololo and the IR telescope on Mauna Kea. Several sizes of diaphragms were used in order to estimate variations with respect to aperture. Calculations were made to quantify the wavelengths observed as a function of the grains' cross-sections. The OH emission was confirmed by the spectrographic and photometric data. It is suggested that sufficient dark materials are present on the cometary surface to have enhanced the absorption of solar radiation to levels sufficient for heating and dissociating surface ice particles.

Description: Measurements of forbidden Ne II lines at 12.8 microns and forbidden S IV at 10.5 microns are presented along a line through and perpendicular to the ionization front in M17 SW. These observations give evidence for ionization stratification within the front, with the most highly ionized material lying toward the east, opposite to the peak molecular emission and far-IR flux. This result supports the picture of M17 SW as a region where a molecular cloud is heated externally. The ionization equilibrium within the ridge and the nebular energetics suggest that the M17 H II region is largely excited by one or more nearby early O stars. The properties of the recently discovered radio point source in M17 are discussed.

Notes: Two common methods of applying dead-time corrections in EDS systems, both of which are carried out internally in the electronics, are examined. The Barnhart method shows serious discrepancies when making dead-time corrections and in certain cases no correction is made at all. The problem is associated with the reliance on the fast amplifier to count all x-rays collected by the detector. In practice, however, the fast amplifier does not always succeed in carrying out this function since x-rays with energies 〈 1500 eV may fall below its threshold level. The problems become worse when a formvar window is substituted for beryllium since a greater proportion of low energy x-rays can now reach the detector. The magnitude of the discrepancy is shown also to be a function of specimen and electron accelerating voltage. Similar experiments with an EDS system using the Covell method show that no such discrepancies arise.

Notes: The simultaneous acquisition of both positive ion and negative ion data under chemical ionization mass spectrometric conditions can aid in the confirmation of assignments made by electron impact gas chromatography mass spectrometry or electron capture gas chromatography. Pulsed positive ion negative ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry coupled with fused-silica capillary column gas chromatographic methods is shown to be useful in environmental and hazardous waste sample analysis. The chemical ionization conditions which maximize sensitivity and the amount of molecular ion information for the priority pollutants are presented. Replicates of response factors for these compounds show good precision. Saturation is observed about 10 ng for those pesticides which give linear responses from 50 pg to 1-10 ng.

Notes: Methods are described to extract and measure 2,3-bis(3-hydroxybenzyl)-γ-butyrolactone (enterolactone) and 2,3-bis(3-hydroxybenzyl)butane-1,4-diol (enterodiol) from physiological fluids. They are based on the use of stable labelled analogues of each compound as internal standards with end point assay being by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The methods were developed to quantify enterolactone and enterodiol in experiments designed to investigate the significance and source of these compounds in man and animals. Examples of studies on human ovarian blood and investigations of their excretion in urine following dietary manipulation are described.
