Notes: Abstract An INDO-CI method in π-approximation extended for transition metal complexes with organic ligands is presented. The σ-polarization in the complex is estimated using a two-dimensional EHT calculation and considered in the π-calculation by means of the diagonal Fock matrix elements. The method is tested for four trisdiimine iron(II) complexes. In agreement with the experimental absorption spectra the calculations show that diimine complexes with non-heterocyclicly bound nitrogen atoms exhibit a large red-shift of the characteristic charge-transfer transition increasing the number of aromatic rings. Contrarily, for diimine complexes with heterocyclicly bound nitrogen atoms no shift of the charge-transfer transition was obtained.

Notes: Abstract A new plant growth retardant, the norbornenodiazetine derivative 5-(4-chlorophenyl) - 3,4,5,9,10 - pentaaza - tetracyclo - 5,4,1,02.6,08.11- dodeca - 3,9 - diene (NDA) was tested for its effects on growth ofZea mays suspension cultures. It was shown that NDA could inhibit cell division almost completely at a concentration of 5× 10−5 M, while 80% of cells could be considered viable. Tracer experiments revealed that NDA inhibited thymidine, uridine, and leucine uptake into cells after 30 min of application. In contrast, amino acid incorporation into proteins was reduced only after one day of treatment and incorporation of precursors into DNA and RNA still later. Since NDA stimulated DNase, RNase, and protease activity in the cells simultaneously, an enhancement of DNA and RNA in cells possibly was prevented. That NDA affected protein synthesis indirectly seemed to be proved by the late point in time of its action on leucine incorporation and by only slight effects on cell free translation. An explanation of these findings could be an alteration in or inhibition of sterol biosynthesis caused by NDA, because it is known that sterols play an important role in controlling permeability of plant membranes as well as in maintaining normal protein synthesis. Thus we tested NDA for its effects on sterol production in maize cells and demonstrated that the composition of the sterol fraction, mainly stigmasterol and β-sitosterol, was clearly changed qualitatively as well as quantitatively.

Notes: Abstract Further experimental evidence is given for theF meson through its decay into η′s. Results are presented for the decay channels ηπ±, ηπ0π± and ηπ+π−π±, and confirm those obtained in a previous experiment.

Notes: Summary The rheological properties of mould suspensions were investigated to find out the effect of mycelial morphology on the apparent viscosity with two different growth forms, filamentous and pelleted forms of Absidia corymbifera. By using a helical ribbon impeller system, the rheological properties could be satisfactorily measured. The experimental data obtained with the filamentous mycelial suspensions showed a marked deviation from Newtonian behaviour and were correlated by a pseudoplastic model. With the pelleted mycelial suspensions, the tendency of Newtonian behaviour was observed. However, at the higher mycelial concentration (〉28 g/l) its rheological behaviour was changed toward a pseudoplastic. The parameters in the pseudoplastic model were compared between these two different morphologies. The consistency indices were correlated with the mycelial dry weight by a simple power law equation and the power law constants found were 2.3 for the filamentous mycelial suspension and 11.3 for the pelleted one.

Notes: Summary Spinning behavior of the last larval instar and ontogenetic changes during the pupal stage (the period of time from capping to emergence) inPolistes annularis are described. The average duration of this stage is 18.80±1.12 days under natural conditions in the Athens area. A table and a key which may be used to determine pupal age according to their external appearance are provided.

Notes: Summary In rats, chronic infusion of α-fluoromethyl histidine, a selective irreversible inhibitor of mammalian histidine decarboxylase, caused a marked depletion of histamine in all tissues examined. There were no gross pharmacological effects associated with this depletion.

Notes: Summary As evidenced by a large pedigree with 21 affected members, acrokeratoelastoidosis (AKE) is an autosomal dominant skin disease (10185; McKusick 1978). Linkage with genetic markers already assigned to human chromosomes could help to map the gene for this disease. Therefore 22 markers were investigated in 61 members of the AKE family. Loose linkage is possible between AKE and ACP1, IGKC, and Jk, but the estimated recombination fractions do not reach significant deviations from 0.5. However, since the three marker loci have been previously assigned to chromosome 2, the AKE locus might be assigned tentatively to the same chromosome. Of the provisionally and inconsistently assigned markers, only blood group P is seen to be in linkage with HLA.

Notes: Abstract The voltage-dependency of alamethicin pore formation is explained by a flip-flop gating mechanism of single alamethicin molecules. The energetically preferred aggregate structure is changed from antiparallel to parallel molecule orientation by membrane voltage application. The electrical field is sensed by the permanent dipole of the α-helical molecule part which spans the hydrophobic membrane core. Ion conducting pore and pore states result from electrostatic repulsion of a varying number of parallel dipoles which arrange circularly. This model is consistent with published data and with two additional experimental facts, that pore state distributions are ionic strength dependent and pore state conductances depend on ionic current direction.

Notes: Abstract Differential cross sections of proton Compton scattering have been measured at the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron. The experiment covers photon laboratory energies between 1.2 GeV and 1.7 GeV and the square of the four-momentum transfer ranges fromt=−0.17 GeV2 to −0.98GeV2 corresponding to c.m. scattering angles between 35° and 80°. The cross sections exhibit a forward peak followed by a monotone fall-off up to the largest measured |t|-values. Fits of the formdσ/dt=A·exp(Bt) to the data points with |t|≦0.5 GeV2 yield forward cross sectionsA, which are consistent with the 0° cross sections calculated from the measured total photon-proton cross section. The average slope isB=5.6±0.14 GeV2.
