    Description: A lidar instrument based on pulsed frequency-doubled carbon-dioxide lasers has been used at 4.88 microns for remote sensing of atmospheric carbon dioxide. A tunable-diode laser spectrometer provided the high-resolution spectroscopic data on carbon-dioxide line strength and line broadening needed for an accurate differential absorption measurement. Initial field measurements are presented, and instrument improvements necessary for accurate carbon dioxide measurement are discussed.

    Description: Markedly elevated nighttime concentrations of serotonin in rhesus monkey cerebrospinal fluid were reduced to daytime levels by exposing the monkeys to continuous light or to the beta-adrenergic antagonist propranolol. Nighttime elevations of melatonin in cerebrospinal fluid were also suppressed by propranolol and light.     Description: Endotoxin-free thymosin fraction 5 elevated corticotropin, beta-endorphin, and cortisol in a dose- and time-dependent fashion when administered intravenously to prepubertal cynomolgus monkeys. Two synthetic component peptides of thymosin fraction 5 had no acute effects on pituitary function, suggesting that some other peptides in thymosin fraction 5 were responsible for its corticotropin-releasing activity. In agreement with these observations, total thymectomy of juvenile macaques was associated with decreases in plasma cortisol, corticotropin, and beta-endorphin.     Description: Voyager 2 photometric and polarimetric data are reduced and tabulated, with spatially resolved limb-to-terminator scans across Saturn's equatorial zone providing information on the altitude distribution of UV-absorbing hazes, together with the phase function and polarizing properties of stratospheric and tropospheric aerosols. It is found that the UV photometry and polarimetry are best fit by Rayleigh's phase matrix. A stratospheric haze of small particles is allowed as long as the optical depth is near unity or less, and the center of the haze layer is in the 30 to 70 mbar region. The altitudes presently derived for three latitudes agree with those obtained by ground-based methane band studies and analyses from Pioneer 11. A high altitude absorber is abundant in the polar regions.

    Description: The discovery of a 4.23 AE, low-Ti composition mare basalt from the Fra Mauro Formation has challenged the hypothesis that the plutonism of the lunar highlands and the mare-type volcanism are two separate problems in both space and time. Attention is presently given to data indicating that non-KREEPy, mare-type volcanism began at least as early as 4.2 AE in the Fra Mauro region, and probably across much of the lunar surface. Massive bombardment during the 'terminal cataclism', and the subsequent veneer of younger mare basalts has obliterated most of the evidence for these ancient volcanic events, which may be related to such basin-forming events as the impact-triggered igneous activity that made Procellarum.

    Description: Morphological evidence is presented (in the form of 3-A-bandpass Fabry-Perot images made with a CCD camera) that the two bright emission-line systems seen toward the galaxy NGC 1275 arise from a high-velocity impact of a foreground galaxy upon the accretion flow of gas cooling in the center of the Perseus cluster. The uniquely high optical-line luminosity of NGC 1275, in comparison with other central galaxies in clusters observed to have cooling flows, may be explained by energy deposited during the collision. Using additional information from 21-cm and extinction measurements, a rough model of the interaction is developed. Problems remain with this model - such as the likelihood of a gas-rich system penetrating to the cluster center. The kinematic structure of the optically emitting gas shows additional complex structure near the nucleus of NGC 1275.

    Description: The Einstein Imaging Particle Counter observed a major X-ray flare in its entirety during a 5-hr period of simultaneous observations, with the IUE, of the dM5e flare star Proxima Centauri in August, 1980. The detailed X-ray light curve, temperature determinations during various intervals, and UV line fluxes obtained before, during, and after the flare indirectly indicate a 'two-ribbon flare' prominence eruption. The calculated ratio of coronal to bolometric luminosity for the event is about 100 times the solar ratio. The Proxima Cen corona is analyzed in the context of static loop models, in light of which it is concluded that less than 6% of the stellar surface seems to be covered by X-ray emitting active regions.

    Description: An enclosure provides a containerless environment in which a sample specimen is positioned. The specimen is heated in the containerless environment, and the specimen melt is dropped through the tube in which it cools by radiation. The tube is alternatively backfilled with an inert gas whereby the specimen melt cools by both radiation and convection during its free fall. During the free fall, the sample is in a containerless, low-gravity environment which enhances supercooling in the sample and prevents sedimentation and thermal convection influences. The sample continues to supercool until nucleation occurs which is detected by silicon photovoltaic detectors. The sample solidifies after nucleation and becomes completely solid before entering the detachable catcher. The amount of supercooling of the specimen can be measured by knowing the cooling ratio and determining the time for nucleation to occur.

    Description: First measurements of the energy of ejection of molecules from icy surfaces by fast incident ions are presented. Such results are needed in discussions of the Jovian and Saturnian plasma interactions with the icy satellites. In this letter parameters describing the ion-induced ejection and redistribution of molecules on the Galilean satellites are recalculated in light of the new laboratory data.

    Description: The use of a holographic technique for accurately measuring the surface figure of the Tidbinbilla (Canberra, Australia) 64-m antenna is described. Described by Bennet et al. (1976) and Scott and Ryle (1977), the technique consists of measuring the complex far-field response of the antenna at a single frequency using a terrestrial, satellite-borne or celestial radiation source of small angular diameter. This two-dimensional pattern is then Fourier transformed to yield the complex illumination function across the antenna aperture; antenna surface deviations are manifested as phase fluctuations in this function. The speed and low cost of using the technique are real advantages where observing schedules with the telescopes are heavily subscribed. For the 64-m antenna, the unweighted rms surface deviation is found to be about 1.8 mm; when weighted by the radial amplitude taper it is about 1.1 mm. Two earlier estimates by other methods had yielded tolerances of about 1.2 mm rms and 1.1 mm rms. It is planned to use the technique to survey the 22-m antennas of the Australian Telescope accurate to approximately 0.1 mm rms near 10 Ghz.
