    Description: Electron density profiles from ground-based and rocket-borne measurements conducted at three sites in northern Scandinavia under various degrees of geophysical disturbances are presented. These data are checked against an instantaneous picture of the ionospheric absorption obtained via the dense riometer network. A map of the riometer absorption and measured electron densities over Scandinavia is given.

    Description: Double-spacecraft observations presented suggest that growth phase phenomena are widespread in the outer magnetosphere and can occur simultaneously at nightside locations 4-5 hours apart in local time. Evidence is also adduced from multiple-spacecraft data and comprehensive magnetometer and riometer data against the concept that growth phase features are not generally due to substorm activity at other locations in the auroral or polar regions. A close relationship is noted between putative energy input to the magnetosphere and the sensitive response of the magnetic field and energetic particles at pre- and near-midnight geostationary orbit locations. This relationship is shown explicitly for the cases of three event periods. Data are also presented which suggest that growth phase features at synchronous orbit can be strictly controlled by IMF orientations.

    Description: Results are presented of a study of some unusual density relations between olivine and coexisting liquid in the system fosterite-fayalite. At 1 atmosphere pressure it is found that olivine floats on its coexisting liquid for intermediate compositions on this binary because of extreme partitioning of Fe into the melt phase. At 20 kilobars, the usual behavior of olivine settling is found to occur because the partitioning of Fe in the melt is reduced, aided possibly by the dissolution of CO2 in the melt from the use of a graphite container. It is determined that olivine flotation and settling are rapid in a time period of only a few hours because viscosities are slightly greater than that of paraffin oil at room temperature. Some adcumulate textures with good triple junction grain boundaries are found to be developed. Observations of differentiated magmatic systems suggest that the mechanisms by which magmas can differentiate vary considerably in the ultramafic to tholeiitic compositional range.

    Description: It is shown that Extremely Low Frequency, or 'lion' roars are closely coupled to quasi-periodic, large scale magnetosheath structures. Because the latter are waves generated by the drift mirror instability, an attempt is made to identify and describe the magnetic and plasma features associated with this instability. Observations and analyses of the large scale structures using ISEE 1 and 2 data for the earth's magnetosheath and Pioneer 11 data for Jupiter and Saturn are presented, along with the background of the drift mirror waves. The cyclotron and drift mirror instabilities occurring in the magnetosheath are natural relaxation processes which reduce the plasma pressure anisotropies created by preferential heating of the solar wind plasma as it passes through the bow shock, as well as the compression occurring when the plasma and fields approach the near-subsolar magnetopause.

    Description: In the 12 hours immediately after a worldwide storm sudden commencement at 0027 UT on July 29, there was a series of at least four magnetospheric substorms, the last and largest of which exhibited an expansion phase onset at approximately 1200 UT. Data from six spacecraft in three general local time groupings (0300, 0700, and 1300 LT) are examined, and vector magnetic field data and energetic electron and ion data from approximately 15 keV to more than 2MeV are employed. Four primary types of studies are carried out: (1) timing and morphology of energetic particle injections; (2) variation of particle phase space densities, using local magnetic field and particle flux data; (3) measurement of boundary motions, using high-energy ion gradient anisotropies; and (4) adiabatic modeling, which included injection, large-scale convection, corotation, and gradient drifts. For the 1200 UT substorms, it is concluded that there was a substantial flux dropout in a broad sector near local midnight because of a large-scale boundary motion, followed by a recovery to a predropout configuration.

    Description: Electric field wave measurements have been performed on two sounding rockets in the equatorial ionosphere. During a daytime flight from Chilca, Peru, intense electrostatic waves were detected on the upward-directed electron density gradient. During a nighttime flight from Kwajalein Atoll, similar waves were detected on a downward directed gradient. These results are in agreement with a gradient drift instability explanation of the generation of the waves. The wave amplitudes were as high as 5 mV/m, implying perturbation drifts comparable to the driving drift velocities. Power spectra from the turbulent region show a peak at long wavelengths, followed by a nearly flat spectral region before breaking into a power law form with negative index of 3.6-3.7 for wavelengths not greater than 30 m. Similarities between the spectra of the two flights suggest that the fundamental processes of the instabilities are the same in the day and nighttime conditions. The rocket data are consistent with radar results presented in a companion paper which show coherent, kilometer scale waves present in the electrojet.

    Description: A recent study showed that streaming energetic (more than 200 keV) electrons in earth's magnetotail are statistically associated with southward magnetic fields and with enhancements of the AE index. It is shown here that the streaming electrons characteristically are preceded by an approximately 15-minute period of tailward plasma flow and followed by a dropout of the plasma sheet, thus demonstrating a clear statistical association between substorms and the classical signatures of magnetic reconnection and plasmoid formation. Additionally, a brief upward surge of mean electron energy preceded plasma dropout in several of the events studied, providing direct evidence of localized, reconnection-associated heating processes.

    Description: A general methodology is presented for estimating a stratum's at-harvest crop acreage proportion for a given crop year (target year) from the crop's estimated acreage proportion for sample segments from within the stratum. Sample segments from crop years other than the target year are (usually) required for use in conjunction with those from the target year. In addition, the stratum's (identifiable) crop acreage proportion may be estimated for times other than at-harvest in some situations. A by-product of the procedure is a methodology for estimating the change in the stratum's at-harvest crop acreage proportion from crop year to crop year. An implementation of the proposed procedure as a statistical analysis system routine using the system's matrix language module, PROC MATRIX, is described and documented. Three examples illustrating use of the methodology and algorithm are provided.

    Description: In connection with the conduction of the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE), a state-of-the-art technology for the inventory of crops using satellite data was developed and tested over a period of three years (1975-77). A method was obtained for determining the total wheat production in a given region by looking at only a subset of its area. The present investigation is concerned with the current state of the art as obtained in the aggregation technology of the Agriculture and Resources Inventory Surveys Through Aerospace Remote Sensing (AgRISTARS) program. Attention is given to details of AgRISTARS baseline aggregation technology, and to recent improvements and future research directions.
