    Description: The technical problems encountered in the development of an advanced separation nut design are described. The nut is capable of sustaining a large preload and releasing that load with a low level of induced pyrotechnic shock, while demonstrating a tolerance for extremely high shock imposed by other pyrotechnic devices. The analysis of the separation nut was performed to acquire additional understanding of the phenomena affecting operation of the nut and to provide quantitative evaluation of design modification for aerospace applications.

    Description: A technology base of new developments which offered potential benefits to a general aviation engine was compiled and ranked. Using design approaches selected from the ranked list, conceptual design studies were performed of an advanced and a highly advanced engine sized to provide 186/250 shaft Kw/HP under cruise conditions at 7620/25,000 m/ft altitude. These are turbocharged, direct-injected stratified charge engines intended for commercial introduction in the early 1990's. The engine descriptive data includes tables, curves, and drawings depicting configuration, performance, weights and sizes, heat rejection, ignition and fuel injection system descriptions, maintenance requirements, and scaling data for varying power. An engine-airframe integration study of the resulting engines in advanced airframes was performed on a comparative basis with current production type engines. The results show airplane performance, costs, noise & installation factors. The rotary-engined airplanes display substantial improvements over the baseline, including 30 to 35% lower fuel usage.

    Description: The method of component mode synthesis is developed to determine the forced response of nonlinear, multishaft, rotor-bearing systems. The formulation allows for simulation of system response due to blade loss, distributed unbalance, base shock, maneuver loads, and specified fixed frame forces. The motion of each rotating component of the system is described by superposing constraint modes associated with boundary coordinates and constrained precessional modes associated with internal coordinates. The precessional modes are truncated for each component and the reduced component equations are assembled with the nonlinear supports and interconnections to form a set of nonlinear system equations of reduced order. These equations are then numerically integrated to obtain the system response. A computer program, which is presently restricted to single shaft systems, has been written and results are presented for transient system response associated with blade loss dynamics with squeeze film dampers, and with interference rubs.

    Description: Pioneer 10 and 11 solar wind speeds measured between 1.4 and 15.2 AU are compared with those of IMP 6, 7, and 8 measured at 1 AU for 90-day intervals centered on six solar radial alignments between 1973 and 1978. The time profile of the solar wind speed undergoes change as the distance from the sun increases, which is due to interaction of adjacent solar wind streams. Speed variations are smaller at greater radial distance and both the highest and lowest speeds disappear as radial distance increases. For periods with extremely high speed solar wind streams, the mean solar wind speed decreases as the distance from the sun increases, which must be due to the disappearance of the highest speeds of the streams with increasing distance. It is concluded that at distances from the sun greater than 30-40 AU, the solar wind behavior may closely resemble that of a radially expanding constant speed plasma.

    Description: The analysis of data obtained by a rocket-borne helium-filled spectrometer employing a curve-of-growth technique in 1977 and 1980 is used in an investigation of the 584-A helium resonance line from the full solar disk. Between 6.5 and 13% of the Gaussian core area was found to be missing through self-reversal. Line widths from 1980 and 1977 were 101 + or - 10 mA and 128 + or - 20 mA full width at half maximum, respectively. No consistent relationship is found between the measured widths and solar activity.

    Description: Material and bonding procedures designed for use as seals at the National Transonic Facility at the NASA Langley Research Center are presented. Teflon TFE was chosen for its ability to withstand pressures of up to 130 psi and temperatures ranging from -320 to 150 F, in addition to tolerances of 0.074 in. and having a movement allowance of 0.75 in. during transient cycles. Since some of the seals are 14 in. in diameter, Teflon sheets had to be sliced and bonded together after machining to size, resulting in seals with circular, oval, straight, and rectangular cross sections. Step-by-step preparation procedures are provided, and it is noted that the scarf joints performed as predicted during tests.
