    Notes: Abstract Temazepam, 7.5 mg was evaluated in the sleep laboratory in 8 elderly insomniacs, using a 14-night protocol (4 placebo-baseline nights, 7 drug nights, and 3 placebo-withdrawal nights). With short-term use temazepam was found to be effective, producing a significant improvement in total wake time from baseline (100 vs. 145 min). With continued drug administration, total wake time remained below baseline but not significantly so (125 vs. 145 min). During drug administration, there were no major CNS and behavioral adverse effects reported such as daytime sedation, memory impairment or hyperexcitability (daytime anxiety). Following drug withdrawal, there was no significant increase in wakefulness, i.e., no rebound insomnia (150 vs. 145 min). In summary, temazepam, 7.5 mg is effective in elderly subjects with short-term use and has a minimum of adverse effects. Use of hypnotic drugs is an adjunctive therapy which should be for a short-term period with subsequent short-term intermittent use as needed. Because of its low propensity for producing rebound insomnia, temazepam can be effectively used in this manner.

    Notes: The Ruff–MKW boiling point method is used to determine equilibrium vapor pressures greater than 660 Pa (5 Torr). Samples are vaporized from a Ruff cell, which has a capillary exit, in the presence of an inert gas. Viscosity coefficients and gaseous interdiffusion coefficients may be determined also. This is a second study of the method using Cd(l) and Zn(l) as samples. For the first study with CsCl(l), see J. Chem. Phys. 81, 915 (1984). Vapor pressure data are in good agreement with previous data and gave a third-law ΔsubH0(298) for Cd(s) of 111.95±0.42 kJ/mol and for Zn(s) of 130.65±0.48 kJ/mol. Analyses of the diffusion coefficients gave atomic diameters of 4.06×10−10 m for Cd and 3.46×10−10 m for Zn; these values are somewhat larger than previously measured values. In these experiments when the equilibrium vapor pressures were greater than 13 000 Pa (100 Torr), the need to consider heat transfer from the furnace to the vaporizing sample was noted, i.e., sample cooling occured due to rapid vaporization. Validity of the MKW analysis was found.

    Notes: Temperature- and density-dependent vibrational relaxation data for the v6 asymmetric stretch of W(CO)6 in supercritical fluoroform (trifluoromethane, CHF3) are presented and compared to a recent theory of solute vibrational relaxation. The theory, which uses thermodynamic and hydrodynamic conditions of the solvent as input parameters, shows very good agreement in reproducing the temperature- and density-dependent trends of the experimental data with a minimum of adjustable parameters. Once a small number of parameters are fixed by fitting the functional form of the density dependence, there are no adjustable parameters in the calculations of the temperature dependence. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Infrared ps pump-probe experiments are presented for the P, Q, and R rotational branches of the asymmetric CO stretching mode of tungsten hexacarbonyl (1997 cm−1) in the collisionless gas phase. The pump-probe decays are tri-exponentials (140 ps, 1.3 ns, and 〉100 ns) in contrast to single exponential decays observed in supercritical fluids and liquid solvents. The 1.3 ns decay component is the vibrational energy relaxation (VER) time. The long component occurs following intramolecular VER into a distribution of low-frequency modes. After VER is complete, the R signal is 48%, the Q signal is 29%, and the P signal is −10% (absorption increase) compared to the t=0 signal. These long-lived signals result from an increase in the occupation numbers of low-frequency modes (internal heating) that causes a shift of the vibrational spectrum. The fastest decay is produced by spectral diffusion. The spectrally narrow pump pulse burns a hole in the inhomogeneous ground state spectrum and generates a narrow spectral population in the excited state (excited state peak). The inhomogeneity arises from the distribution of occupation numbers of the low-frequency modes that produces different combination band spectral shifts. Spectral diffusion is caused by the time evolution of the complex low-frequency thermal vibrational wave packet. Two possible models for the spectral diffusion are evaluated, one in which spectral diffusion reduces the pump-probe signal by hole filling and broadening of the excited state peak, and one in which the spectral diffusion only broadens the excited state peak. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : The well field serving the Lyons Ferry Fish Hatchery has experienced reduced water temperatures following continued, periodic withdrawal of large volumes of water. In January 1985, the well field temperature was 49°F, which is less than the optimal 52°F for raising salmon and steelhead trout. The aquifer supplying the hatchery is in hydraulic and thermal connection with the Snake River and a flooded embayment of the Palouse River. Ground-water temperatures in the well field cycle on an annual basis in response to changes in surface water temperature and pumping rate. Numerical simulation of the well field, using a simplified mixing cell model, demonstrates the coupling of well field hydraulics and aquifer thermal response. Alternative pumping schedules indicate that it is feasible to adjust ground-water pumping to effectively store heat in the aquifer during the summer months when surface water temperatures are elevated. Sensitivity analysis of this model indicated that the primary controls of the system's thermal response are the volume of the aquifer assumed to contribute to the well field and temperature of the overlying surface water body.
