Description: Accretion models of planet formation and the early cratering history of the solar system suggest that planet formation is accompanied by a cloud of debris resulting from accumulation and fragmentation. A rough estimate of the infrared luminosities of debris clouds is presented for comparison with measured 10-micron luminosities of young stars. New measurements of 13 F, G, and K main-sequence stars of the Ursa Major Stream, which is thought to be about 270-million years old, place constraints on the amount of debris which could be present near these stars.

Description: Six flowfield configurations are investigated with sidewall angles of 90 and 45 deg, and swirl vane angles of 0, 45, and 70 deg. It is found that central recirculation zones occur for the swirling flow cases investigated, which extend from the inlet to x/D = 1.7, where x is the axial polar coordinate, and D is the test section diameter. Five-hole pitot probe pressure measurements are used to determine time-mean velocities, and corresponding flow situations are predicted and compared to results of experimental data. Excellent agreement is found for the nonswirling flow, although poor agreement is found for swirling flow cases, especially near the inlet. The discrepancy is attributed to the lack of realism in the turbulence model, and/or to inaccurate specification of time-mean velocity and turbulence energy distributions at the inlet.

Notes: The hindered amine-induced decomposition of polypropylene hydroperoxide was studied in the solid state and in the presence of a liquid solvent and the polymer was compared with model hydroperoxides. The high reactivity of the macrohydroperoxides appears to be related to the adjacent, hydrogen-bonded hydroperoxide groups that occur in the polymer. The hindered amines are converted to nitroxides in the reaction via hydroxylamine intermediates. Amine-induced decomposition of polypropylene hydroperoxide is faster in the absence of a liquid solvent for the amine than in the presence of the solvent, probably because of the strong amine-hydroperoxide association that occurs in the solid state. The decomposition process in the solid state is sufficiently rapid for the reaction to contribute to the effectiveness of hindered amines in the light stabilization of polymers.

Notes: The protonation of a heterocyclic rigid-rod polymer poly(p-phenylene benzbisthiazole) and its model compound has been studied by UV-visible and Raman spectroscopy. Because of the two nitrogens on the heterocyclic ring, spectroscopic features of unprotonated, half-protonated, and fully protonated structures have been identified. For the fully protonated molecule, there is also an increase in conjugation between the phenyl ring and the heterocyclic ring.

Notes: Liquid-crystalline solutions of cellulose triacetate (CTA) in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)-CH2Cl2, TFA-1.2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) solvent mixtures were examined by means of PMR spectroscopy. CTA forms both cholesteric and nematic phases in these solvents depending on the CTA concentration. In cholesteric solutions the CH2Cl2 signal is initially a singlet and then splits into a doublet. The time dependence of the splitting and the effect of CTA concentration are reported. The results suggest that the cholesteric phase slowly changes into a nematic phase in the magnetic field. The splitting of the CH2Cl2 proton signal into a doublet and the 1,2-DCE signal into a quartet are due to direct magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. Rotation of the sample in the magnetic field results in the disappearance of the doublet or quartet and suggests that the solvent molecules are originally oriented in the direction of the magnetic field. In the biphasic region, immediate splitting of the CH2Cl2 proton signal suggests that the anisotropic phase is nematic.

Notes: Small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering results for a series of un-neutralized and neutralized sulfonated polystyrenes are presented for the range of sulfonation from 0 to 7.26 mol %. From the small-angle scattering it is shown that above the 3 mol % level for both the zinc and sodium salts, a Bragg spacing (37 Å) and diameter (6.9-8.4 Å) of the scattering unit can be calculated. When the concentration of salt is increased, there is no appreciable change in the latter two measurements. The wide-angle data indicate that the cations do not influence to any large extent the basic intramolecular and intermolecular structure of polystyrene. All the data are consistent with the onset of clustering above a critical ion concentration.

Description: Digital time series data at 16 heights within two storms were collected at vertical incidence with a 10-cm Doppler radar. On several occasions during data collection, lightning echoes were observed as increased reflectivity on an oscilloscope display. Simultaneously, lightning signals from nearby electric field change antennas were recorded on an analog recorder together with the radar echoes. Reflectivity, mean velocity, and Doppler spectra were examined by means of time series analysis for times during and after lightning discharges. Spectra from locations where lightning occurred show peaks, due to the motion of the lightning channel at the air speed. These peaks are considerably narrower than the ones due to precipitation. Besides indicating the vertical air velocity that can then be used to estimate hydrometeor-size distribution, the lightning spectra provide a convenient means to estimate the radar cross section of the channel. Subsequent to one discharge, we deduce that a rapid change in the orientation of hydrometeors occurred within the resolution volume.

Description: The 64-m spacecraft communication antenna of the NASA-JPL Deep Space Network has been equipped for spectral line observations at K band (18-25 GHz). To demonstrate the potential of this system, preliminary observations of the (1, 1) transition of ammonia are reported for a selection of eight southern molecular clouds. Estimates of gas density and ammonia column density are reported for six sources.

Description: Rocket observations made from two sites in northern Scandinavia between November 6 and December 1, 1980, as part of the Energy Budget Campaign are discussed. It was found that significant vertical and temporal changes in the wind structure were present and that they coincided with different geomagnetic conditions, that is, quiet and enhanced. Before November 16, the meridional wind component above 60 km was found to be positive (southerly), whereas the magnitude of the zonal wind component increased with altitude. After November 16 the meridional component became negative (northerly), and the magnitude of the zonal wind component was observed to decrease with altitude. Time sections of the perturbations of the zonal wind reveal the presence of vertically propagating waves, suggesting gravity wave activity. The waves are found to increase in wavelength from 3-4 km near 40 km to more than 12 km near 80 km. The observational techniques made use of chaff foil, chemical trails, inflatable spheres, and parachutes.
