    Notes: Summary In photoperiodic adult diapause ofDrosophila testacea, the critical daylength fell between 14 and 16 h at 15°C, but between 13 and 14 h at 18°C. None entered diapause at LD 10∶14 and LL at 23°C. This species quantitatively responded to daylengths around the critical daylength in the process of diapause induction. The length of the sensitive period seems to change with temperature.

    Notes: Summary Bacillus amyloliquefaciens 321S cells were immobilized with 3.4% κ-carrageenan gel in bead form, and α-amylase production by the immobilized cells was studied. Cells in the gel, after the population reached maximum were restricted to a layer of 50 μm thickness, from the surface of the gel, suggesting that oxygen diffusion is the growth limiting factor. The specific respiratory activity and the growth rate of the entrapped cells under such conditions were 1/2 and 1/5 ∼1/10, respectively, that of free cells. In spite of the repressed respiration and growth, the specific rate of α-amylase production of the entrapped cells reached the maximum value of free cells or higher. In continuous culture, in an aerated vessel with a volume ratio of gel beads to medium of 1:2, the maximum production rate of α-amylase was obtained at a dilution rate of 1.0 h−1, which was double the maximum specific growth rate of the strain. These results showed that bacterial α-amylase production, which is a nongrowth-associated type of synthesis was achieved with the use of immobilized cells.

    Notes: Summary The regulatory mechanism of ATP regeneration by the glycolytic pathway in Hansenula jadinii cells was investigated by analyzing the initial stage of CDP-choline fermentation. As a result, the “on-off” of ATP regeneration was found to be determined by the ATP concentration overcoming the inhibitory effect of phosphate buffer on hexokinase activity. The concentration of ATP at the initial stage of fermentation was greatly influenced by the kinds and amounts of glycogen in cells. Based on these results, the regulatory mechanism of ATP regeneration by the glycolytic pathway is discussed in detail.

    Notes: Summary Basophil-rich infiltrates in regional lymph nodes of guinea-pigs were demonstrated by electron microscopy after the intradermal injection of T cell mitogens (PHA and Con A). Basophils infiltrated the stroma of the lymph node via the postcapillary venules (PCV) and migrated to the paracortex. Prior to infiltration of the lymph nodes a cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity reaction was seen in the mitogen-injected skin. B cell mitogen (LPS) injection did not induce this response.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of serotonin (5-HT) positive fibers in the olfactory bulb of the rat, cat and monkey was studied using the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) immunohistochemical method and highly specific antibodies to 5-HT. In general, 5-HT fibers were present throughout all layers in the olfactory bulb of these species except for the olfactory nerve layer and different as well as restricted laminar patterns of 5-HT distribution were observed. There were also species-related differences in the pattern of 5-HT distribution, in each layer. The most notable species difference was apparent in the glomerular layer of the main olfactory bulb. In case of the rat and cat, a very dense plexus of 5-HT fibers was observed to be diffuse in the glomerulus, while in the monkey, the distribution of 5-HT fibers was scanty and partial, as was seen in the accessory olfactory bulb of the rat.

    Notes: Summary In the rat kidney the presence of the kallikrein-like pro-phe-arg-naphthylester esterase activity was demonstrated by a simultaneous coupling azo dye method. The enzyme was identified as a serine-protease because it was inhibited by preincubation with diisopropyl-fluorophosphate and unaffected by sodium iodoacetate. Since kallikrein is a serine-protease and pro-phe-arg-naphthylester is a synthetic and sensitive substrate for kallikrein, the enzyme activity revealed by this method was considered to represent kallikrein, although non-kallikrein esterase activity is not totally excluded. The enzyme activity was localized mainly in the outer stripe of the outer medulla, with focal extensions primarily only in the lower half of the cortex corresponding to the medullary rays.

    Notes: Summary Intracellular ATP-dependent Ca2+ sequestration mechanisms were studied in isolated dispersed rat pancreatic acini following treatment with saponin or digitonin to disrupt their plasma membranes. In the presence of45Ca2+ concentrations 〈10−6 mol/liter, addition of 5 mmol/liter ATP caused a rapid increase in45Ca2+ uptake exceeding the control by fivefold. ADP mimicked the ATP effect by 50 to 60%, whereas other nucleotides such as AMP-PNP, AMP-PCP, CTP, UTP, ITP, GTP, cAMP and cGMP did not. Maximal ATP-promoted Ca2+ uptake was obtained at 10−5 mol/liter Ca2+ uptake by mitochondrial inhibitors was dependent on the Ca2+ concentration, indicating the presence of different Ca2+ storage systems. Whereas the apparent half-saturation constant found for mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake was ∼4.5×10−7 mol/liter, in the presence of antimycin and oligomycin (nonmitochondrial uptake) it was ∼1.4×10−8 mol/liter. In the absence of Mg2+ both ATP- and ADP-promoted Ca2+ uptake was nearly abolished. The Ca2+ ionophore and mersalyl blocked Ca2+ uptake. Electron microscopy showed electrondense precipitates in the rough endoplasmic reticulum of saponintreated cells in the presence of Ca2+, oxalate and ATP, which were absent in intact cells and in saponin-cells without ATP or pretreated with A23187. The data suggest the presence of mitochondrial and nonmitochondrial ATP-dependent Ca2+ storage systems in pancreatic acini. The latter is likely to be located in the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Solvent extraction of alkaline earth metal picrates with poly- and bis(crown ether)s containing benzo-15-crown-5- and benzo-18-crown-6 moieties was carried out in a water-chloroform system. The poly- and bis(crown ether)s showed larger extractability for the metal picrates than the corresponding monocyclic crown ethers. Especially, poly- and bis(benzo-15-crown-5), and bis(benzo-18-crown-6) were found to have relatively high extractability and selectivity for Ba2+ and Sr2+, respectively.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Poly- und Bis-Kronenether mit Benzo-15-krone-5- und Benzo-18-krone-6-Einheiten wurden zur Extraktion von Erdalkalipikraten im Wasser-Chloroform-System verwendet. Die genannten Ether zeigten eine bessere Extraktionsfähigkeit für die Pikrate als die entsprechenden monocyclischen Kronenether. Im Falle von Ba2+ und Sr2+ ergab sich eine besonders gute Extrahierbarkeit und Selektivität mit Poly- und Bis(benzo-15-krone-5)- und Bis(benzo-18-krone-6)-Ethern.

    Notes: Summary This paper describes a group of anti-electrostatic agents 1 for polyamide fiber(Nylon 6). Agents 1 are calcium imidazolinium-carboxylates having poly(oxyethylene) chain and long alkyl group (C11H23 and C17H35). Eight derivatives of 1 were prepared by a four-step one-pot synthesis shown in Scheme 1. Nylon 6 fibers and films containing some of 1 (1.0 and 2.0 wt%) show improved anti-electrostatic property. The performance of 1 was increased by the increase of the length of poly(oxyethylene) chain.
