Notizen: Hydrodynamic instabilities, such as the Rayleigh–Taylor (R–T) instability, play a critical role in inertial confinement fusion as they finally cause fuel-pusher mixing that potentially quenches thermonuclear ignition. Good understanding of the instabilities is necessary to limit the mixing within a tolerable level. A series of experiments has been conducted on the GEKKO XII laser facility [C. Yamanaka et al., IEEE J. Quantum Electron. QE-17, 1639 (1981)] to measure hydrodynamic instabilities in planar foils directly irradiated by 0.53 μm laser light. It has been found that (1) the imprint is reasonably explained by an imprint model based on the equation of motion with the pressure perturbation smoothed by the cloudy-day effect, and (2) the experimental R–T growth rate is significantly reduced from the classical growth rate due probably to ablative stabilization enhanced by nonlocal heat transport. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Calibration of a Pt resistance thermometer (Netsushin) in magnetic fields and under pressure in the range of 1.5–300 K and below 1.5 GPa is presented. With the pressure medium, olefin olygomers, Daphne 7373, the pressure is continuous at its solidification and the pressure drop from 300 to 4.2 K by 0.15–0.17 GPa is constant, irrespective of the initial clamped pressure at 300 K. The applicability of the thermometer and the medium for precise study in field and pressure at low temperature is discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: FeSe thin films were prepared on GaAs(100) substrate by the selenization of Fe films using molecular-beam epitaxy. FeSe compound thin films were obtained at a substrate temperature above 380 °C. From the depth profiles of Fe and Se in the selenized film measured by Auger electron spectroscopy, it was confirmed that an FeSe layer with a constant ratio of Fe/Se was formed. The measured composition ratio of Fe/Se in the film was 1/3. It was different from the composition in Fe3Se4 or Fe7Se8, which is a stable bulk FeSe compound. From the measured M–H curve, it was found that the obtained FeSe film consisted of two phases with different magnetic properties. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Co–Ag granular films having various Co grain sizes are prepared by rf sputtering under various sputtering conditions. The Co grain sizes are derived from the magnetization curves by dividing them into ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic components. As the Co content decreases, the radii of the superparamagnetic Co grains, rg, decrease and the distances between the Co grains, tg, increase. The magnetoresistance is proportional to the volume density of superparamagnetic grains or related to krg3 exp(−tg/l) with k=3.8×102 μΩ/cm2 and l=20 Å, implying that the giant magnetoresistance is caused by the spin-dependent scattering in the inner part of the superparamagnetic Co grains as well as at the grain surfaces. Furthermore, it is found that the extraordinary Hall effect arises mainly from the side jump mechanism, and that significant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy appears in the Co composition range between 40 and 70 at %. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Magnetic properties and magnetoresistance (MR) are examined for the Fe/Au multilayers (MLs) prepared on glass substrates by electron-beam evaporation techniques as a function of the thicknesses of Fe and Au layers; dFe and dAu. For small dFe, the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is induced, and in the films of dFe(approximate)5 Å, the stripe magnetic domain patterns are observed. In dFe≤3 Å, however, a superparamagnetic nature and a granular-type giant magnetoresistance (GMR) appear at room temperature. In a series of [Fe(3 Å)/Au(dAu)]40 MLs, the MR ratio increases with dAu and reaches the first peak at around 10 Å. On the other hand, at 14 K, the ferromagnetic component having a perpendicular anisotropy becomes dominant, and the GMR arises from the random wall alignment due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent Fe layers, causing the first MR peak at dAu(approximate)10 Å. The layered structure is obscured and the superparamagnetic Fe grains are created by annealing at 300–350 °C, followed by the crystalline growth upon annealing at temperatures above 350 °C. These variations in the film morphology cause the changes in the saturation magnetization and the MR ratio. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
