Notes: Summary On the 8th post-operative day, an endothelial layer covers the ‘venous patch’ luminal part when the adventitia of the patch is sutured to a 5–8 mm-long arteriotomy performed in the common carotid of the rat. The probable origin of this secondary endothelium is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Seasonality of conceptions in human populations in Chile was studied for a period of 30 years (1945–1974). Clear seasonal conception courses exist in the country, exception made of the northern and southern extremes. Seasonal flux is concentrated mainly in January, but also secondary increases in April and June were observed. Along the 30-year period a general pattern of decreasing seasonality is observed. Conception is significantly related to temperature and photoperiod in this country, the maximum rates of conceptions being observed in coincidence with the maximum temperatures and photoperiods. Nonclimatic factors which may be affecting seasonality of conceptions are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract A southward tendency of increment in pod-length is shown for 11 populations ofAcacia caven (Mol.) Hook et Arn. localized along a climatic gradient of increasing annual rainfall in Chile. This fact would suggest thatA. caven populations occurring in the south are in better conditions for reproduction than northern populations, since pod-length is related to the amount of seeds inside the pods. The possible bearing of this southward tendency of increasing seed production upon the expansion ofA. caven toward the more humid zones in southern Chile is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A new species of Rhodotorula Harrison was recovered in May 1978 from Spanish powdered red pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) in Madrid, Spain. It could not be identified with any hitherto described species of yeast and it was assigned to the genus Rhodotorula Harrison as representative of a new species on the bases of both its morphological and physiological characteristics, for which the name of Rhodotorula matritense is proposed.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract We investigated the possible inhibitory action ‘in vitro’ by antibiotic containing discs against microscopic alga that are potential human pathogens of the genus Prototheca especially P. wickerhamii. The results indicated that inhibitors in vitro included amicacin, colistin, dibecacin, framicetin, gentamycin, kanamycin, lividomycin, neomycin, polymyxin, paromomycin, ribostamycin, sisomycin and tobramycin. We emphasize the interest in the effectiveness at these drugs in a case of human protothecosis.
Resultaron como inhibidores ‘in vitro’: Amikacina, Colistina, Dibekacina, Framicetina, Gentamicina, Kanamicina, Lividomicina, Neomicina, Polimixina, Paromomicina, Ribostamicina, Sisomicina y Tobramicina. Se destaca el interés del estudio de sensibilidad a estas drogas ante un caso de Protothecosis humana.

Notes: Abstract In the present paper we have developed a new rationale and an experimental schedule to approximate the frequency of SCEs which occur independently of BrdU incorporation, namely, the baseline frequency of SCEs. The method used includes the analysis of SCE yields in second and third division chromosomes after BrdU-substitution for 1, 2, and/or 3 successive replication rounds in the presence of this thymidine analogue, leading to a set of ten different experimental results. As a result of formulating various mathematical equations and applying them to the data, an accurate estimation of the frequency of baseline (BrdU-independent) and BrdU-induced SCEs, can be made, thus avoiding the difficulties inherent in the current extrapolation methods. The conclusions are that 1) SCEs seem to be formed after DNA synthesis (by exchanging post-replicative DNA portions), but, obviously, very near to the replication fork and 2) that under our experimental conditions about 0.065 SCEs per picogram of DNA per cell cycle occur as a consequence of chromosome replication, this frequency being increased by BrdU-substitution. The methodology seems to be reliable enough to be used in other species and systems in order to compare baseline SCE frequencies.

Notes: Abstract In the elongation zone of Allium roots a certain fraction of cortical cells undergo DNA replication during transition from newborn non-proliferative cells to mature cells. The percentage of cortical cells in the mature zone with DNA content 2C (G01) and 4C (G02) is roughly 60% and 40%, respectively. We propose that a replication signal whose concentration decreases the farther you go from the root tip, along the root axis, and which acts on cells after their last partitioning, could account for the observed distribution of mature cortical nuclei with different DNA contents.
