Description: The erythrocytes of the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), an egg-laying mammal, were examined for the presence of phosphorylated compounds. The erythrocytes contained only 0.03 +/- 0.01 micromoles of adenosine 5'-triphosphate per milliliter of cells. This amount is two orders of magnitude less than that in human cells. Although the echidna erythrocytes had an abundance of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate and other glycolytic intermediates, no other energy-rich pyridine and purine compounds were detected.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kim, H D -- Zeidler, R B -- Sallis, J D -- Nichol, S C -- Isaacks, R E -- AM 00820/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- AM 20815/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- AM 27570/AM/NIADDK NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Sep 25;213(4515):1517-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7280672" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: An investigation of the efficacy of astatine-211--tellurium colloid for the treatment of experimental malignant ascites in mice reveals that this alpha-emitting radiocolloid can be curative without causing undue toxicity to normal tissue. By comparison, negatron-emitting phosphorus-32 as colloidal chromic phosphate had no antineoplastic activity. The most compelling explanation for this striking difference is the dense ionization and short range of action associated with alpha-emission. These results have important implications for the development and use of alpha-emitters as radiocolloid therapy for the treatment of human tumors.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bloomer, W D -- McLaughlin, W H -- Neirinckx, R D -- Adelstein, S J -- Gordon, P R -- Ruth, T J -- Wolf, A P -- CA-12662/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA-15523/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- NS-15380/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Apr 17;212(4492):340-1.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7209534" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Gene expression in eukaryotes is influenced by a wide variety of mechanisms including the loss, amplification, and rearrangement of genes. Genes are differentially transcribed, and the RNA transcripts are variably utilized. Multigene families regulate the amount, the diversity, and the timing of gene expression. The present level of understanding of gene expression in eukaryotes is attributable mainly to biochemical methods rather than to traditional genetics. The new techniques that permit analysis and modification of purified genes of known function will identify both the control regions in eukaryotic genes as well as the molecules within cell that influence gene expression.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brown, D D -- GM22395/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Feb 13;211(4483):667-74.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6256857" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Intraventricular administration of supraphysiological amounts of renin, nerve growth factor preparation, or angiotensin II greatly increased the consumption of water and hypertonic sodium bicarbonate solution by sheep. These effects were antagonized by intraventricular administration of drugs that prevent the formation of angiotensin II or block its receptors. The fact that these angiotensin-blocking drugs did not change the sodium intake of sodium-deficient sheep challenges the idea that central angiotensin action is involved in sodium appetite due to a deficiency.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Coghlan, J P -- Considine, P J -- Denton, D A -- Fei, D T -- Leksell, L G -- McKinley, M J -- Muller, A F -- Tarjan, E -- Weisinger, R S -- Bradshaw, R A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Oct 9;214(4517):195-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6169149" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A new spiroplasma isolated from Ixodes pacificus collected in Oregon was serologically and morphologically distinct from known spiroplasmas. The new spiroplasma could also be isolated in tick cell cultures. Discovery of a new fastidious mycoplasma in ticks offers opportunities to explore the possible role of these agents in human and animal diseases.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tully, J G -- Rose, D L -- Yunker, C E -- Cory, J -- Whitcomb, R F -- Williamson, D L -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 May 29;212(4498):1043-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7233197" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A virus that replicates in the ovary of a parasitoid wasp is injected into the parasitoid's host during oviposition. Successful development of th parasitoid egg within the host depends on the presence of th virus, which acts to suppress the host's immune response (encapsulation) toward the egg. This is an example of obligatory mutualism between a virus and a eukaryotic organism.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Edson, K M -- Vinson, S B -- Stoltz, D B -- Summers, M D -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Feb 6;211(4482):582-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7455695" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Voltage-clamp recordings from mouse spinal neurons grown in culture were used to study the membrane current fluctuations induced by 12 substances structurally similar to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Fluctuation analysis provided estimates of the electrical properties of the elementary events underlying these responses. Estimates of the mean conductance of channels activated by all of the substances except glycine did not differ significantly from that estimated for GABA, whereas mean durations of agonist-activated channels all differed significantly from that found for GABA. The results indicate that all of the substances tested except glycine activate channels of similar conductance but of different durations.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Barker, J L -- Mathers, D A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Apr 17;212(4492):358-61.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6259733" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The spatial distribution of phosphorus within active fraction nucleosomes reveals that the path of the DNA is consistent with one and three-fourths turns of DNA supercoiled around the outside of the protein core. This phosphorus distribution, obtained with an imaging electron spectrometer in a conventional transmission electron microscope, simultaneously establishes new limits of sensitivity for elemental microanalysis.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Bazett-Jones, D P -- Ottensmeyer, F P -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Jan 9;211(4478):169-70.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7444457" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
