Notes: Summary The clearance of chlordiazepoxide from the systemic circulation was studied in 20 subjects which included 15 patients with alcoholic hepatitis and 5 normal volunteers. The half-life for the appearance of the drug in the systemic circulation was found to increase exponentially with age (r=0.73, P〈0.0005) and was independent of the presence of alcoholic hepatitis. The metabolic clearance of chlordiazepoxide was significantly lower in the patients than in the normal subjects (7.6 compared to 13.8 ml/kg-h, P〈0.005). Linear regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between clearance and albumin (r=0.77, P〈0.00005). However, the predictive value of this relationship was shown to be minimal. Multiple regression analysis produced only a slight improvement in the correlation when both albumin and lactate dehydrogenase were used as variables (r=0.83, P〈0.00005). In six of the patients, a second clearance study was conducted three weeks following their initial one. All repeat subjects showed improvement both clinically and as reflected by their laboratory tests for liver injury, but there was not a significant change in their clearance of chlordiazepoxide. Multiple regression analysis of the clearance data on the initial and repeat subjects showed a significant correlation between clearance and the variables age, albumin, and lactate dehydrogenase (r=0.91, P〈0.0025). This relationship suggests that over a short period of time (where age can be considered constant) changes in albumin and lactate dehydrogenase could be potentially useful in predicting clearance changes in a single individual.

Notes: Summary Intravenous aminophylline 0.48 g produced a sharp increase in plasma free fatty acids. After three days of treatment with aminophylline 0.96 g/day i. v., plasma post-heparin lipoprotein lipase was significantly reduced, and post-heparin hepatic triglyceridase remained unchanged. Alpha1lipoprotein was reduced by treatment, in parallel with lipoprotein lipase, while other lipoprotein fractions, serum cholesterol and triglycerides were unaffected.

Notes: Abstract Rates of stable ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis have been calculated from time-series measurements of the uptake of 3H-adenine and labeling of the intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and stable RNA pools for microbial communities from a variety of freshwater and marine ecosystems. Total rates of microbial RNA synthesis ranged from 6.6 pmol to 3.8x105 pmol of adenine incorporated into RNA l−1 h−1. Most of the variation was attributable to differences in microbial biomass; if total rate data are normalized to living microbial carbon (based on ATP measurements), the variation in specific rates of RNA synthesis is decreased by a factor of 100 to 1 000 for microbial communities from diverse environments. Light/dark experiments indicated that the uptake and incorporation of 3H-adenine are uncoupled from photophosphorylation. The measurement of rates of stable RNA synthesis of microbial assemblages in nature can yield useful information concerning in situ growth rates and the response of communities to changes in environmental conditions such as nutrient additions.

Notes: Summary Male gametes ofPlumbago zeylanica were examined in pollen grains and tubes using light and electron microscopy of chemically and physically fixed tissues, and Nomarski interference microscopy of isolated, living sperm cells. Male gametes are elongate, spindleshaped cells containing a nucleus, mitochondria, ER, ribosomes, vesicles, dictyosomes, probable microfilaments, and a variable number of plastids. In mature pollen grains ofP. zeylanica, the two sperm cells are directly linked; they share a transverse cell wall with plasmodesmata and are enclosed together by the inner vegetative cell plasma membrane. One of these two sperms is also associated with the vegetative nucleus as a consistent feature of pollen grain organization. The basis of this association appears to be a long, narrow projection of the sperm cell (averaging 〈 1 μm wide and about 30 μm long) which wraps around the periphery of the vegetative nucleus and occupies embayments of that nucleus. This association is maintained throughout pollen tube growth but becomes less extensive near the completion of tube growth and is severed following tube discharge. The consistent occurrence of the sperm-vegetative nucleus association in pollen grains, tubes and isolated pollen cytoplasm suggests that the two structures may be directly connected, but attempts to visualize this type of connection were unsuccessful. Possibly, the entwining nature and extent of complementary interfaces between vegetative nucleus and sperm may have a role in stabilizing their association. Functionally, the two sperms and vegetative nucleus appear to travel as a linked unit within the pollen tube, possibly increasing the effectiveness of gamete delivery and helping to ensure nearly simultaneous transmission of sperms into the receptive megagametophyte.

Notes: Abstract In an experiment with the 30-inch Hybrid Spectrometer at Fermilab we have obtained the inclusive and semi-inclusive production cross sections of the ϱ0 meson using a conventional background subtraction technique. Production cross sections for the ϱ0 are derived as a function of the Feynman scaling variablex, and the transverse variablesp t 2 andE t =(p t 2 +M 2)1/2. The longitudinal distributions are compared with the (1−x) dependence of the proton and meson valence quark structure functions, using various forms of recombination and fragmentation models. The transverse distributions are compared with thermodynamic models. We give density matrix elements for the ϱ0 production from pions in the extreme forward region.

Notes: Abstract Inclusive production of ϱ0,K *±(892), andf is studied in $$\bar p$$ p interactions at 12 GeV/c. The inclusive cross sections for ϱ0,K *±(892), andf are found to be 6.7±0.3 mb, 1.0±0.2 mb, and 1.4±0.3 mb, respectively. The differential cross sections are presented as a function of c.m. rapidity, Feynmanx and square of the transverse momentump T 2 . Comparison with the correspondingpp data shows some interesting differences which can be attributed to the $$\bar p$$ p annihilation. The results are compared with the predictions of the quark fusion model.

Notes: Abstract The fraction of the total available energy carried by photons and the fraction carried by neutral particles of all types ine + e − multihadron final states have been measured at three centre-of-mass energies between 12 and 35 GeV. These fractions are approximately 27% and 37% with no strong dependence on centre-of-mass energy and the event topology. The neutrino energy fraction is estimated to be less than 10% at the 95% confidence level.

Notes: Abstract The report presents the results of a wind-tunnel study of the flow of the natural wind over complex terrain. A 1:4000 undistorted scale model of Gebbies Pass in the South Island of New Zealand was prepared and tested in the boundary-layer wind tunnel in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury. Three forms of construction, viz., terraced, contoured and roughness-added, were compared. Velocity and turbulence profiles, Reynolds stresses and spectra were measured, and correlation of results between different types of construction was calculated. The terraced form was much simpler to construct but was found to be unsatisfactory. The correlation between the contoured and roughness-added models was as high as 0.94, although the roughness-added model made a significant difference to the results in the lower 20%; of the boundary layer. The results of these tests will be compared with results from the field in a future report.

Notes: Abstract Inclusive production of∑ ±(1385) resonances is studied in $$\bar pp$$ interactions at 12 GeV/c. The cross sections for∑ +(1385)+cc and∑ − are determined to be 251±38 μb and 123±30 μb, respectively. The inclusive spectra are presented as a function of Feynman x, c.m. rapidity and the squared transverse momentump T 2 . Significant differences with the correspondingpp data are found in the longitudinal momentum distributions. The qualitative features of the production can be explained by simple quark ideas.
