Notes: Abstract We study the behaviour of a single impurity in a two-dimensional Ising model. Local properties in the neighbourhood of the impurity are calculated exactly. The results show that the critical exponents remain unchanged, but the critical amplitudes undergo pronounced changes. Furthermore, we develop a real-space renormalisation group for the perturbed system and calculate by means of two different approximate realisations the correlation functions near the impurity. In all cases we find that an ordered cluster forms around the impurity at temperatures well above the critical temperature. We discuss the relation of this effect to the local freezing-out phenomenon.

Notes: Abstract The stability of attitude equilibria relative to gravitational torques for a rigid satellite in a circular orbit has been divided into three inertia regions, the Lagrange region of assured Liapunov stability, the Beletskii-Delp region which is often described as stabilized due to gyroscopic coupling, and an assured instability region. The generalization of these regions to the case of dual-spin or gyrostat satellites whose internal spin momentum is along a principal axis is treated here. The stability boundaries are obtained for all possible equilibrium orientations for such vehicles, and the variations of these boundaries corresponding to changes in the internal momentum magnitude, or to aligning the momentum with a different principal axis, are determined.

Notes: Summary Genetic heterogeneity of the Morquio syndrome has been known since deficiency of β-galactosidase was detected in some patients in addition to the deficiency of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulphate sulphatase in the classical form of Morquio syndrome. The clinical findings of 11 patients with MPS IVA, the classical form, and 2 patients with MPS IV B, a variant form, are described. All of the patients with MPS IV A showed extraskeletal manifestations of their disease. The patients with MPS IV B seem to be less severely affected.

Notes: Summary This paper summarizes previous chromosomal studies in patients with the Cornelia de Lange syndrome showing abnormal karyotypes. We report on 45 cases of the Cornelia de Lange syndrome clinically examined by one of us (B. B.) and chromosomally studied using several different methods. Two abnormal karyotypes were found: a girl with a 45,X karyotype and a boy with a (13q14q) translocation which was also found in his phenotypically normal mother and maternal grandmother. Because of recent reports of the duplication 3q syndrome and Comelia de Lange-like phenotypes, prometaphase chromosomes were studied in 31 patients. All karyotypes were normal. As there was an excess of boys among the younger patients, special examination for the fragile site on X(q28) was carried out. This abnormality was not found. Even though no patients with the dup(3q) syndrome were found among the Cornelia de Lange patients, chromosome studies are recommended especially in connection with genetic counselling. A recurrence rate of 2–5% must still be considered for the Cornelia de Lange syndrome.

Notes: Summary Enbryopathy has been produced by inhibition of histiotrophic nutrition in the rat using a number of agents which prevent this process. The experiments were carried outin vitro at various stages of development before the inception of a chorio allantoic placenta. Dose-dependent effects on the embryo were demonstrated using the acid bisazo dye Trypan Blue, which inhibits endocytosis, and an enzyme inhibitor of bacterial origin known as leupeptin which inhibits cathepsin B, H and L. Homogenates of rat kidney and placenta also produced congenital defects; the concommitant electron microscopical changes in the yolk sac suggest that these effects too are due to alterations in the availability or quality of histiotroph.

Notes: Abstract High-spin levels in189Hg have been populated via the175Lu(19F, 5n) reaction. A rotation-aligned band built on a 13/2+ state originating from theνi 13/2 subshell is identified which is interpreted within the framework of “quasiparticle+rotor” models. A negative parity band built on a 21/2− state which can be accounted for by a three quasi-particle state is also observed.

Notes: Abstract Rotationally inelastic atom-diatom collisions at wide angles and energies large compared to the attractive potential well depth are approximately described by classical scattering of structureless particles and rigid rotor molecules interacting by a rigid potential shell ofC ∞υ symmetry. The double differential cross section for deflection and rotational energy transfer isanalytically related to the geometry of the shell. In continuation of previous work the influence of molecular rotation before collision is considered. It is found: The conspicuous structure of bulge scattering or orientational rainbows in this cross section persists, but is modified by initial rotation. The modifications are angle dependent. The (classical) information of bulge scattering on the anisotropy of the potential is increasingly averaged out by higher initial rotation. In experiments exploiting this new probe to the anisotropy of the repulsive molecular interaction initial rotation should be kept as low as possible.
