Notes: A spill of JP-4 jet fuel at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City, Michigan, contaminated a water-table aquifer. An infiltration gallery (30 ft × 30 ft) was installed above a section of the aquifer containing 700 gal JP-4. Purge wells recirculated three million gallons of ground water per week through the infiltration gallery at a rate designed to raise the water table above the contaminated interval. Ground water containing ambient concentrations of oxygen and nitrate was first recirculated for 40 days. Concentrations of benzene in monitoring wells beneath the infiltration gallery were reduced from 760 to 〈1μ/1. Concentrations of toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene were reduced from 4500 to 17, 840 to 44, 2600 to 490, and 1400 to 260 μ/1, respectively. Average core concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene were reduced from 0.84 to 0.032, 33 to 0.13, 18 to 0.36, 58 to 7.4, and 26 to 3.2 mg/kg, respectively. Ground water amended with nitrate (10 mg/1 nitrate-nitrogen) and nutrients was then recirculated for 76 days. Final core concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene were 0.017,0.036,0.019,0.059, and 0.27 mg/kg, respectively. Final aqueous concentrations were 〈1 μ/1 for benzene and toluene, 6 μ/1 for ethylbenzene, and 20 to 40 μ/1 for the xylene isomers, in good agreement with predicted values based on residual fuel content and partitioning theory. Although alkylbenzene concentrations have been substantially reduced, the test plot is still contaminated with the weatheredfuel. Based on stoichiometry, approximately 10 times more nitrate was consumed than could be accounted for by BTX degradation alone, indicating that other compounds were also degraded under denitrifying conditions.

Notes: Preliminary studies were carried out on the effect of stocking rate during late autumn on a continuously stocked Lolium perenne-dominated sward at an upland site in central Scotland. Measurements were made of L. perenne tiller population density on 29 September and 2 November and of L. perenne net production, mean sward height and total herbage mass in early and late October and early and late November. Stocking rates were 12 ewes per ha during October and 8 and 16 ewes per ha during November. Sward height and herbage mass declined with time and more rapidly at the higher stocking rate. L. perenne growth per tiller and per unit area was influenced by time but not by stocking rate and was closely related to the 5·5°C soil temperature at 10 cm depth. Tiller senescence was greatly reduced at the higher stocking rate and/or the consequentially lower sward height and herbage mass. Tiller net production was therefore sustained at a positive level on the higher stocked sward throughout November while on the lower stocked sward it fell below zero early in November.

Notes: Abstract. A feeding experiment was conducted in aquaria to evaluate growth, survival and food consumption by paddlefish, Polyodon spathula (Walbaum), fry fed live Daphnia pulex, brine shrimp nauplii, Artemia sp. (L.), from two different geographical sources, or one of three commercial dry diets. Fry were fed from first feeding (day 8 post-hatch) to day 17 post-hatch. All diets had similar percentages of crude protein and lipid. Fatty acid composition was similar in all diets except for Great Salt Lake brine shrimp nauplii which had a higher percentage of linolenic acid, 18:3 (n-3), and a lower percentage of eicosapentaenoic acid, 20:5 (n-3). Paddlefish fed live food organisms were significantly (P〈0·05) larger than those fed non-living diets. Survival was significantly higher (P〈0·05) for fish consuming live Daphnia (95·3%) than all other treatments. Percentage of fish with food in the digestive tract did not significantly differ (P〉0·05) among treatments. Poorer growth and survival by fish fed prepared diets may have been due to limited digestibility of the dry diets by paddlefish.

Notes: Fresh pork sausage prepared from prerigor ground and salted meat had higher pH, lower cooking losses, higher juiciness scores, and less easily fragmented cooked patties than that prepared from post-rigor ground and salted meat. Sausage from prerigor ground-post-rigor salted meat was intermediate in these properties to prerigor ground and salted and postrigor ground and salted products. Prerigor grinding and salting reduced the rate of autoxidation (TBA number) during storage at 0°C contrasted to oxidation in sausage that was salted postrigor after either prerigor or postrigor grinding.

Notes: Cooked liver sausage was freeze-fractured and examined using scanning electron microscopy after fixation in either Zenker's solution or osmium tetroxide. The microstructure was characterized as consisting of dispersed protein particles and fibrous networks of protein surrounding variable-sized fat globules. If the fat globules were not thoroughly fixed they were dislodged from the freeze-fractured surfaces leaving vacuoles that could easily be mistaken for air pockets. The study demonstrated that the structure of liver sausage includes both an oil in water emulsion with protein as the emulsifier as well as dense layers of protein or protein-fat colloidal complexes.

Notes: The phagocytic activity of mononuclear phagocytes of A/J mice and Wistar rats was estimated by the carbon clearance test following injection of Mycoplasma arthritidis. In mice, the overall phagocytic activity was significantly increased at the end of the first week (P 〈 0.0001), but the increase was marginal by the third and fourth weeks after injection. A significant increase in the relative weight of liver and spleen was observed even when phagocytic activity had returned to levels similar to those of controls (P 〈 0.001). In rats, the overall phagocytic activity was significantly increased until the fourth week (P 〈 0.00001). There was not, however, an increase in the relative weight of liver and spleen as observed for the mice. The results are discussed in the context of factors contributing to the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for differences in the patterns of arthritis due to mycoplasma observed in mice and rats.

Notes: We previously reported that phospholipase increases host cell penetration by Toxoplasma gondii. Here we show that calcium-dependent phospholipase A (PLA) activity is found in the supernatant of sonically disrupted T. gondii. When fractions of disrupted T. gondii were incubated with host cells, the release of fatty acids and lysolipids was detected. Fractions of sonically disrupted T. gondii with PLA activity increased T. gondii host cell penetration in a bioassay. In addition, a protein of approximately 20 kDa was detected by immunoblot of T. gondii antigens with horse antiserum to snake venom, the major antibody of which recognizes PLA2. Incubation of T. gondii with exogenous PLA2 resulted in increased solubility of a rhoptry protein. This protein, which we previously characterized as involved with enhanced parasite invasion of host cells and which is recognized by monoclonal antibody Tg49, was detected in increased amounts in supernatant fractions of extracellular parasites treated with PLA2. Whereas without PLA2 treatment, it is only slightly soluble under physiological conditions. This raises the possibility that PLA may be implicated in the release of rhoptry proteins.

Notes: An experiment extending over a 2½-year period from June 1976 to October 1978 assessed the effect on herbage yield of method of establishment, species and level of N application.Perennial ryegrass cv. Gremie and Italian ryegrass cv. RvP were established by broadcasting or drilling into cultivated ground or by direct-drilling, using a Howard Rotaseeder, into paraquat-sprayed but uncultivated ground. These treatments were combined with annual rates of N application of 0, 120, 240 or 360 kg ha-1.Over the experiment drilling into cultivated ground gave the highest yield—3·6 and 4·8% higher than the broadcast and direct-drilled treatments, respectively. Italian ryegrass consistently outyielded perennial ryegrass, with an overall mean dry matter yield advantage of 23·7%. There was no significant interaction between sowing method and species; direct-drilled Italian ryegrass produced a mean yield 17·3% higher than that of drilled perennial ryegrass.
