Notes: The photo-oxidation of solid polymers at ambient temperatures is shown to be greatly affected by the low mobility of radicals in the solid state. When a radical pair, produced by photo-initiation, escapes the initial polymer cage, the probability of its recombination remains high even after several propagation steps. This phenomenon, known as secondary cage recombination, has a pronounced effect on the kinetics of oxidation and on the mechanism of photostabilisation by radical scavengers. The occurrence of secondary cage recombination is demonstrated for polypropylene photo-oxidation and a kinetic analysis is developed to predict the consequences of this effect.

Notes: As part of a continuing study of nonisothermal rheology (meaning the simultaneous application of strain and temperature changes), we here consider the behavior of polystyrene near the glass transition temperature Tg. In particular, we measured the increase of the apparent Tg as the cooling rate is increased from 0.003 to 4.5°C/sec. This change (up to 16°C increase) has both practical and theoretical implications. For enhancing the mechanical properties of a glassy product, one desires maximum orientation (stress) just prior to quenching; the optimum deformation/temperature strategy for maximizing stress is affected by the level of Tg. By using a nonisothermal strategy we were able to produce higher frozen-in orientations, and thus higher mechanical properties, than have been previously reported. For a theoretical understanding of the rubbery state just prior to quenching, we used the generalized time-temperature superposition of our prior work; we found that a modified shift factor of the form aT(T,TRg), where TRg refers to a rate-dependent Tg, gives an improved fit to data but is not by itself adequate.

Notes: The reaction kinetics of the enzymatic of cephalexin from 7-aminodea-cetoxy cephalosporanic acid and phenylglycine methylester was studied using the synthesizing enzyme obtained from Xanthomonas citri. The activation energy, Km value for 7-aminodeacetoxy cephalosporanic acid and phenylglycine methylester, and Ki value for phenylglycine methylester were determined as 8.63 kcal/mol, 3.7mM, 14.5mM, and 70mM, respectively. The enzyme was found to be constitutive and susceptible to deactivation.

Notes: A model is derived for solids mixing and material transport in a continucus flow rotary dryer or reactor. Detailed analysis of the particle motions in the turnover process provides an opportunity to apply well-known reactor models to several subregions and to relate the overall results to different design geometries and operating conditions. The essential parameters of the model are the number of stages, the volume fractions of mixed flow and plug flow in each stage, the recycle ratio and the bypass ratio.

Notes: For fluid-solid reactions, a random pore model is developed which allows for arbitrary pore size distributions in the reacting solid. The model can represent the behavior of a system that shows a maximum in reaction rate as well as one that does not, and it identifies an optimal pore structure for either of such systems. It is demonstrated that the new model subsumes several earlier treatments as special cases. By comparison with the grain model, a relationship is derived between the effective grain shape factor and a pore structure parameter defined here. When the variance of the pore size distribution is effectively zero, the new results approach those predicted by the Petersen (1957) model over a large range of conversions. The char gasification data of Hashimoto et al. (1979) are shown to produce correlations consistent with the expectations of the new model.

Notes: About 3d-Metal-Complexes of 2-HydrazinoquinoxalinesSome complexes of 3d-metals and 2-hydrazinoquinoxalines were synthetisized and characterized spectrometrically. These compounds probably exist in solution as tetragonal distorted octahedrons. The organic ligands are to be found at the quadratic base, and anions or solvent-molecules, respectivily, at the tops of the octahedron. The existence of chelates can be concluded from i.r. spectra. Together with u.v./vis-spectra back donation can be assumed. An assignment of the u.v./vis-bands is suggested and the ligand-field parameters Dq are estimated.

Notes: Synthesis of trans-4-Diphenylphosphinyl StilbenesThe reaction of 4-tolyl-diphenylphosphine oxide with N-bromosuccinimide results in 4-diphenylphosphinyl benzylbromide 5 which can be easily converted to (4-diphenylphosphinyl)-benzyl triphenylphosphonium bromide 6 and (4-diphenylphosphinyl)-benzyl diphenylphosphine oxide 7, respectively. In the presence of strong bases 6 and 7 react with aromatic aldehydes 8 to the 4-diphenylphosphinyl substituted stilbenes 1. The yields depend on the nature of base and solvent. The trans configuration of 1 is determined by i.r. and 1H-n.m.r. measurements.
