    Description: The detection of negatively charged cometary ions in the inner coma of Comet Halley is reported. These ions are observed in three broad mass peaks at 7-19, 22-65, and 85-110 AMU, with densities reaching greater than about 1/cu cm, about 0.05/cu cm, and about 0.04/cu cm, respectively, at a distance of about 2300 km from the nucleus. The ion species thought to be present include O(-), OH(-), C(-), CH(-), CN(-) and heavier complex CHO molecular ions. As negative ions are easily destroyed by solar radiation at about 1 AU, an efficient production mechanism, so far unidentified, is required to account for the observed densities. The detection of negative ions in the coma near 1 AU implies that negative ions should also be present in similar neutral gas and dust environment farther away from the sun. If the negative-ion densities are large enough, they could play an important part in physical processes such as radiative transfer or charge exchange.

    Description: Asteroid spectral measurements are presently approached via comparisons with reflectance spectra from 60 powdered meteorite samples representing 50 different meteorites. While the powdered meteorites have undergone alteration by exposure to water vapor and by hydrocarbon contamination characterized by absorption bands near 3.45 microns, they retain various other spectral features which render them useful for identification. While these features can be used independently to ascertain mineralogy and meteorite type, the use of the entire spectrum in a digital search library is preferred for successful identification.

    Description: Propagation and damping of ion-acoustic waves have been investigated in a Q-machine plasma consisting of K(+) positive ions, SF6(-) negative ions, and electrons. The phase velocity of the ion-acoustic 'fast' mode increases with increasing epsilon, the concentration of negative ions. The wave damping decreases with increasing epsilon, and nearly disappears, for the highest wave frequencies investigated, when epsilon is more than about 0.9. Both results are in agreement with predictions from Vlasov theory.

    Description: This paper describes the evaluation of mixed implicit-explicit finite element formulations for hyperbolic heat conduction problems involving non-Fourier effects. In particular, mixed implicit-explicit formulations employing the alpha method proposed by Hughes et al. (1987, 1990) are described for the numerical simulation of hyperbolic heat conduction models, which involves time-dependent relaxation effects. Existing analytical approaches for modeling/analysis of such models involve complex mathematical formulations for obtaining closed-form solutions, while in certain numerical formulations the difficulties include severe oscillatory solution behavior (which often disguises the true response) in the vicinity of the thermal disturbances, which propagate with finite velocities. In view of these factors, the alpha method is evaluated to assess the control of the amount of numerical dissipation for predicting the transient propagating thermal disturbances. Numerical test models are presented, and pertinent conclusions are drawn for the mixed-time integration simulation of hyperbolic heat conduction models involving non-Fourier effects.

    Description: The effect of the structural Fe(3+) or disseminated ferric oxides in oxidized ferromagnesian silicates on the reflectance spectral profiles of the remnant Fe(2+) ions in oxidized silicates was investigated. Results of spectral measurements in the visible NIR region, performed on several well-characterized pyroxenes representative of different structural types and compositions, were correlated with data obtained from the Mossbauer spectra of the oxidation products. The measurements made it possible to determine the relative proportions of Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) ions present in the oxidized pyroxenes and provided information on the amorphous ferric oxide phases present in the oxidation products. The results also suggest a mechanism for producing the nanophase hematite popularly considered to be responsible for the features observed around 0.62 and 0.87 micron in the remotely sensed spectra of Mars.

    Description: A transformation method has been developed that is very successful in simulating composite imagery and shows that, in general, 8-bit simulated composite images are almost indistinguishable from true composite imagery. This technique was designed to facilitate the display and interpretation of composite satellite imagery on display devices with only 256 displayable colors. The method is suitable for the combination of two 8-bit images into a single 8-bit composite image.

    Description: Three uppermost Cretaceous through basal Paleocene stratigraphic sequences are examined for planktic foraminiferal assemblage stability and temporal succession patterns. These sequences are at mid-latitude South Atlantic DSDP Site 528, then-equatorial Pacific DSDP Site 577 and the Tethyan shelf Ben Gurion section of the Negev, Israel. In order to better estimate biogeographic patterns and habitat preferences, the results of these analyses are compared to previous Cretaceous biogeographic studies and to previous analyses of Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundary shelf and epicontinental sections. Results indicate that immediately following the K/T boundary, the examined epicontinental and open-ocean sites were exploited primarily by previously epicontinental planktic foraminiferal assemblages. This pattern of K/T boundary assemblage dominance suggests the geologically instantaneous break-down of Late Cretaceous epicontinental and open-ocean biogeographic provincialization. This shift in open-ocean foraminiferal assemblages is not consistent with models of nonselective K/T boundary extinctions, but is consistent with models of extinction resistence and offshore expansion of nearshore taxa. The re-establishment of stable biogeographic differences between open-ocean and epicontinental planktic foraminiferal assemblages occurs by the basal Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina Zone. At open-ocean sites 528 and 577 and the outershelf Ben Gurion section, P0 and P. eugubina Zone faunal records are marked by a pronounced alternation between Paleocene biserial- and non-biserial-dominated assemblages, This alternation appears strongly damped at shelf and epicontinental sections previously examined. The first appearance and peak magnitude of abundant earliest Paleocene trochospiral forms (Parvularugoglobigerina, Eoglobigerina, Morozovella, Globoconusa) also vary from site to site and may depend closely on levels of primary carbonate productivity.
